1 Community School District Annual Progress Report for the School Year Mission Statement The mission of the Community School District is to nurture positive, productive and responsible members of society by providing diverse and challenging school experiences that enables lifelong learners. 2 Message from the Superintendent Opportunities for Improvement The Community School District continues to enjoy success in the classroom. Student learning as assessed by the Test of Basic Skills and Test of Educational Development consistently indicates students outperforming students in the region and across the state. Our Fine Arts and Athletic programs are annually among the best in the state winning multiple conference and state championships. Whether it is winning another Jazz championship, or another football or baseball championship, has become synonymous with success. However, a new school year presents opportunities for improvement. We can be proud of what we achieve in the Community School District but our achievements are not due to complacency and satisfaction with the status quo. Our organization is what it is because a staff of dedicated, aspiring men and women have a common goal to do what is best for students and are always looking for ways to achieve that goal. I want to thank the entire staff for their commitment to making our schools a safe and nurturing environment for students. 4 Lakeview Elementary The Lakeview Elementary staff continues to adjust and refine our academic expectations. In the past year, teachers have worked diligently to develop and implement math and reading assessments that will help us track students progress. An Extended Day tutoring opportunity was given to students needing additional support. We are proud to say that by the end of the school year, more than % of every class was meeting grade level proficiency standards in reading and in math. For the school year, Lakeview teachers will investigate, develop, and implement a writing curriculum, including assessments, for our students. State core curriculum essential skills and concepts for writing will be targeted. In addition to academic changes, the physical structure of Lakeview Elementary has changed as well. A big THANK YOU to the staff for their continued patience and hard work while this is being finished. Construction crews have been busy adding bright colors to our media center, beautiful cabinetry and lighting to all of the classrooms, and an efficient and easily accessible new office / teacher work area. By the end of the school year there are more changes in store for our school - eight additional classrooms, a new circulation desk and redesign for the library, bus dropoff and pick-up area, early childhood playground, and more! 5 Middle School The school year was highlighted by an increased focus on struggling learners at Middle School. In addition to classroom teachers differentiating their instruction and providing supplemental and intensive assistance, we utilized our Reading Strategist, Extended Day Program and a variety of volunteers to work with students individually and in small groups. Along with other teachers in the district, middle school staff utilized a Collaborative Learning Team approach in efforts to improve student achievement in their respective grade levels. As we transition to the current school year, the CLT approach will also be used to facilitate work within content teams as we analyze curricular needs. During the school year we continued our efforts to build a safe, caring and respectful community. We will maintain this focus during the current year as we look more specifically at respect among our student body, which is sometimes a challenge during the middle school years. 6 High School My name is Nathan Wear and I am the principal at High School. This is my tenth year in education and I am excited to be serving as high school principal. Prior to coming to, I worked as an elementary principal and teacher. My wife teaches middle and high school Spanish and our two children attend Lakeview Elementary. Taking on a new leadership role has been a positive experience and we are proud to be members of the greater community. 11 th Grade I.T.E.D. Reading Comprehension th Grade I.T.E.D. Math Success on several arenas has ushered in an environment of school pride through the halls of High School. Our staff is dedicated to making sure we are "state champs" in the classroom as well. students participate in several clubs and activities while maintaining a strong focus on academics. Our ACT scores continue to be above the state average, particularly in the area of math and science. Our staff is organized into collaborative learning teams to focus on ensuring success for all students. 10 Director of Instruction The academic year was focused on SCSD staff forming grade level and content-alike collaborative learning teams focused on student learning. These teams met twice per month to review data, discuss instructional strategies and develop systems of interventions to monitor student progress. Our staff members have worked diligently as individuals in the past, but we believe our students can learn at even higher levels when we work together. We are committed to the collaborative learning team philosophy moving forward, because we believe there is no way a single teacher has all the time, all the knowledge, and all the skills to meet the needs of every child. Every student deserves access to the best practices of every teacher, not just the teacher they were assigned to. A new academic calendar for includes 1pm student dismissals on almost every first and third Thursday of the month so that staff may participate in professional learning activities. SCSD staff will use this time to meet in teams to look at the Core essential concepts and skills. By the end of this year, we will have a plan in place to ensure all students will learn the essential concepts and skills which are now required by the state. Teams will also continue to review student assessment data, discuss instructional strategies and develop systems of interventions to monitor student progress. In the area of technology, the district purchased over twenty LCD projectors and documents cameras for classroom use as well as several ipads. Many parents have communicated their appreciation of the new and phone notification system which was put in place during the fall of We plan to create a technology infrastructure plan this year as we consider our short and long term technology needs.
