2 What is STEAM? It stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, but it is so much more than that. A focus on the areas of STEM plus Fine Arts (musical arts, theatre arts, visual arts) Integration of multiple disciplines (science, math, fine arts, and others) 2 A focus on hands-on, real-world experiences, problem solving, application, exploration, and innovation Prepares well-rounded students for college and the workforce and provides unique educational opportunities

3 Who might be interested in the STEAM program? 3 Students who are interested in these types of subjects: Science Math Engineering Designing, Creating, & Refining Computer Science Technology Biotechnology Robotics Music Technology Health Science/Medical o o o o o o o o o o Students with these characteristics: Highly motivated STEAM-minded Participate in Fine Arts Well-rounded Thinkers Creators Like to apply what they are learning Problem solvers Would like to major in a STEAM discipline in college Want to explore a STEM topic in depth

4 Brookwood High School STEAM Overview 4 Complete the following credits: 4 Science, 4 Math, 4 LA, 3 Social Studies, 2 Foreign Lang Credits or CTE 1 Fine Arts Any point in high school 1. Academic Coursework 2. Extracurricular Clubs/ Activities At least one BHSsponsored STEM extracurricular At least one Fine Arts extracurricular or cafeteria plan of Fine Arts events Any point in high school One Field Study Experience (ex: internship, research) Capstone Project that highlights the FS and STEAM Experience During 11th and/or 12th grade or summer between 4. Field Study Experience & Capstone Project 3. Real-World Connections Point-based system during Jr and Sr years that includes choice of School -sponsored Field Trips Speakers Outside BHS experiences *A list of approved options for 1, 2, and 3 will be provided. 4 must be preapproved by the STEAM Advisor and/or Administrator.

5 5 Pathway Criteria Details Academic Coursework Explore the following academic courses in grades 9-12: A minimum of the following credits in the following academic course areas: 4.0 in Science (at least 1.0 AP recommended) 4.0 in Math (at least 1.0 AP recommended) 4.0 in Language Arts 3.0 in Social Studies 2.0 in Foreign Lang. or CTE (Career & Technical Education) One course may not be used in more than one of the above categories. At least ONE of the following Fine Arts courses: 2D & 3D Design (Visual Arts Comp I & II) AP Art History, if offered Any Theatre course Any Dance course Any Chorus course Any Orchestra course Any Band course Any Music Tech course AP Music Theory, if offered Jazz Combo

6 6 Pathway Criteria Details Extracurricular Clubs/ Activities Engage in at least 2 of the following extracurricular STEAM clubs or activities during grades 9-12: At least ONE of the following Brookwoodsponsored extracurricular STEM clubs: STEM-based honor society Competition-based STEM club Other STEM club OR At least ONE of the following independent activities: STEM-based competition sponsored by a Brookwood STEM teacher A N D At least ONE of the following Fine Arts extracurricular activities: Drama Club Jazz Band Dance Club Art Club Marching Band One of several Fine Arts Honor Societies OR 4 Evening or Weekend Events during 11 th /12 th : Performances at BHS or other approved locations

7 7 Pathway Criteria Details Real-World Connections Experience STEAM in the real world by earning at least 4 points PER year in BOTH 11 th and 12 th grade: Any combination of the following: 2 points for each school-sponsored STEAM Field Trip 1 point for each Guided Study or Extended Lunch STEAM Speaker 2 points for each STEAM evening or weekend event. Examples may include: STEAM Speaker Symposium, Hour of Code, Maker Faire, STEAM festival or event announced by BHS as a points opportunity

8 8 Pathway Criteria Details Field Study Field Study Experience must be preapproved by your STEAM Advisor and have a minimum number of contact hours. Extend by participating in 1 of the following Field Study experiences and completing a supplementary Capstone Project during 11 th and/or 12 th grade: At least ONE of the following Internship Experiences: Internship Option 1: BHS class that includes a STEM-field experience placement which may include, but not be limited to, Work Based Learning or QUEST Gifted Internship. Internship Option 2: Participation in a summer or school-year STEM program or immersion experience (not affiliated with Brookwood HS and not for course credit) with a minimum number of contact hours. OR At least ONE of the following Research Experiences: Research Option 1: Gifted Directed Study course studying a preapproved STEM-related topic. Research Option 2: Independent research project supervised by a Brookwood STEM teacher on a STEM-related topic. Research Option 3: Research project for AP Capstone course focused on a STEM-related topic. *Students do NOT have to use a class period in order to complete the Field Study.

9 Field Study Requirements Placement, research, and/or study topic must be preapproved by your STEAM Advisor and must meet a minimum number of contact or research hours. 9 Culminating Capstone Project (portfolio and presentation of experiences and learning) is required. See your STEAM Advisor for more information. For Internship Experience Options: Students must be engaged in meaningful, real-world experiences in the field of study. For Research Experience Options: The research or study must focus on a topic that is above and beyond the AKS covered in a course offered at Brookwood.

10 Internship Placements/ Research Ideas Field Study experiences are individualized opportunities based on student interest. 10 Completing FS Independently (not as part of an existing course): 1. FS Proposal preparation and studentinitiated contact (for internships) or Research Plan preparation 2. Verification by advisor -If needed Advisor assistance with placement/ research idea 3. Completion of Capstone requirements Using an Existing Course to also meet FS Requirement: 1. Course teacher will handle placement/topic and all requirements for course credit 2. Advisor will preapprove proposal including placement, time commitment, and role/project to allow it to count as your STEAM FS 3. Completion of Capstone requirements, some simultaneously

11 Capstone Project 11 Portfolio Completed over the course of junior and senior year with Advisor assistance Primarily designed to be completed simultaneously with the Field Study Due at the end of the senior year Displays STEAM experiences and reflections Presentation Student-prepared display at STEAM Senior Symposium (modeled after Science research conferences) Displays the Field Study and STEAM experience Students will be available to answer questions about their display
