45 Ten Top tips for and Passing Exams Readiness is all. is about preparing for the exam. Good is vital. For difficult exams, last minute revision will never be successful or enough. Start to get your children ready now. Write a revision timetable. Plan and write a timetable to show what they will revise and when. Break the exams down into topics. Set a reasonable schedule: not so hard it will be impossible to fulfil not so easy that they won t reach their goals or cover all topics. Stick firmly to the timetable. Encourage discipline. If the time is planned for revision, help your children to stick to it. Don t ask them to do anything else (wash up / walk the dog) or give them an excuse to put off their revision. Supply the right environment. Watching TV with a book on their lap is pointless; using online revision sites is good but make sure they are not on Facebook instead. A silent room is best, even music can be distracting. Exams are sat in silence and some children need to practise the ability to concentrate in these conditions. Writing revision notes. They won t remember things by just reading. Summarize textbooks and class notes; make pointers of keywords; condense notes onto index cards. These activities will help your child retain information. Put the posters round the house / in their bedrooms / on the back of the bathroom door! Give them rewards. Something nice to eat to build in a proper break, for example. Working flat out all night without a break is not effective. Test them. The only way to be sure they know something is to test them. Encourage them to draw diagrams, write out equations or definitions until they know them by heart. Use the index cards for key words / spellings / definitions. Testing is hard but it works. Use past papers. Encourage them to answer as many previous exam questions as possible to practise timing and exam technique. websites. BBC Bitesize and many others provide revision guidance, tests, materials. These need to be interactive to be effective. If they are just reading the screen get them to make written notes.
