Audio-lingual instruction for beginning students is in the form of dialogue and pattern drill, built around authentic situations of interest and an organized plan of structure presentation. Using a function-oriented approach combined with a grammar sequence, the course broadens the student's ability to communicate in French in a variety of contexts. Students will increase their knowledge of French culture, art, and history and develop an awareness of a culture that is different from their own French III (IntH) 1 credit Gr: 9-12 Prerequisite: French II (IntH) Description: [International Baccalaureate course offered only at GHS] The aims of the foreign language program in the International Baccalaureate include developing students powers of expression in a second language, providing them with an efficient tool for the study of other subjects, and bringing them into contact with ways of thought which differ from their own. At the French III level, students will work toward accuracy in the oral and written forms of the language, both in grammatical exercises and in their own written and spoken comments. They will begin to approach a variety of works in French literature, as well as study aspects of the life and civilization of the countries where French is spoken. Awareness and appreciation of a new culture are developed by the students. Songs, folklore, newspapers, and other media complement the study of the textbook German II (R) 1 credit Gr: 9-12 Prerequisite: German I Description: A deeper study of sentence structure and German culture characterizes this course. By the end of the second year, a student should attain the following: control of basic conversational patterns using correct punctuation and intonation, the ability to read simple selections for comprehension, the ability to write simple statements, and a deepened cultural knowledge Pre-AP German III (H) 1 credit Gr: 9-12 Prerequisite: German II Description: This course begins a two-year AP program designed to advance language skills for active communication. Conversational German, increased vocabulary, grammar and syntax skills, and reading and oral expression are the basic goals of the course. 9 ONLINE COURSE OPTIONS High School Course Guide Languages Other Than English The following courses are offered at all campuses using an online interactive course delivery system. Students meet in a campus computer lab on a regular weekly schedule throughout both semesters of the school year. Students will also be expected to complete additional activities online outside their regularly scheduled classes on campus. Students progress in narrative story telling capabilities CREDIT BY EXAM (CBE) OPTIONS Students who are native speakers of languages other than English have the option to earn their required credits by successfully completing the CREDIT BY EXAM process. Two to three times a year, these exam opportunities are scheduled on a Saturday at one of the GISD campuses. Students complete an objective test as well as demonstrating their capabilities in reading, writing, and speaking. Students must be awarded an overall score of 70 or above to receive credit.
