The GHS MCJROTC Veteran Team, consisting of four team members, scored a 2152, taking the first place trophy. The complete article can be found on page 2. Front row: Hannah Eades and Jillian Tyler. The GHS MCJROTC Veteran Team, consisting of four team members, scored a 2152, taking the first place trophy. This air rifle match was a three position competition with eleven (11) teams participating from the states of MS and LA. Gulfport also won the three month long Postal portion of the competition and had the top two shooters. GHS MCJROTC has won the first place trophy for a second year in a row. Ryan Cook finished first place overall with a total of 551. Desia Tyler finished in third with a total of 539. Jillian Tyler shot a total of 532 and finished first place overall in the postal match. Brittany Robbins shot a total of 530 and finished 2nd place in the postal match. Tyro Team members Hannah Eades and Hunter Burnett participated in the individual match. After taking first place in this match, the team will go on to compete in the February USMC JROTC National Match in Anniston, Alabama. Gulfport High School experienced great success at the 20th Annual Coliseum Hoopsfest at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum this past weekend. Athletic Director Bryan Caldwell extended a big thanks to Bill Holmes and Matt McDonnell for their support of high school basketball. The final score for the Admirals was 57, West Harrison 42. The Lady Admirals were also victorious against Pass Christian. The final score was Admirals 44, Pass Christian 30.

3 Gulfport High School girls basketball coach Donny Fuller was recently elected to the Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame. He has coached at Gulfport High since 2009 and continues to lead our girls basketball team to victory. We at GHS would like to congratulate him on this great honor. His induction to The Hall of Fame will take place on June 27th in Jackson. Congratulations, Coach Fuller! IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS: The tutoring bus will run this week on Wednesday afternoon. Our teachers offer extra help before and after school. A copy of this year s tutoring schedule can be found on our school website. We encourage your child to take advantage of this opportunity to improve his/her academic standing. Please take a look at the tutoring schedule! IMPORTANT ACT/PLAN STRATEGY FOR STUDENTS: *When students hear that the last 5 minutes remain, all students should select an answer choice, remain consistent with the answer choice, completely bubble in all remaining answers, and continue to make educated guesses. No question should be left unanswered. Parents, please encourage and remind your child to use the strategies taught in class. SENIOR CHECKLIST FOR THIS MONTH: Work on your ACT score. Go and visit the colleges that interest you most. Apply for admission on colleges websites. Applying for local scholarships. Read the Scholarship Newsletter on GHS s website for more information. Meet all deadlines, especially any housing deadlines.

4 SCHOLASTIC ART AND WRITING AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED Congratulations to Gulfport High School s art students who received Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Mallory Ferrell (11th) 2 GOLD KEYS! (Drawing & Digital Art, Maya Milner (9th) 1 SILVER KEY & 1 Honorable Mention (Painting & Digital Art), and Brooke Huber (11th) Honorable Mention (Photography). This is an extremely competitive contest, and we are extremely proud of Mrs. Laura Pecoul s art students.

5 MIKE WILEY PERFORMANCE ENGAGES GHS STUDENTS Indy Arts Award Winner Mike Wiley entertained and educated students on Friday, January 24th. His performance Brown vs. Board of Education: Over Fifty Years Later involved audience participation from many Gulfport High students, which helped them assume ownership of the performance and also made it more personal and relevant to them. Wiley s fabulous performance was brought to Gulfport High through the partnership with the 33rd Trojan Alumni Association. COMMON CORE DEMANDS MORE: Gulfport High School believes that the implementation of the Common Core State Standards is a positive change to ensure that our students are college and career ready. More rigorous educational standards ultimately benefit our students and push them to think and to solve real-life problems, as well as to construct their own arguments based on evidence. Ingalls Shipbuilding issued $107,000 in STEM grants to South Mississippi schools., and one of Gulfport s STEM classes was fortunate to be a grant recipient. Mr. Clinton Brawley and Mrs. Sandy Comer-East are pictured with Ingalls President Irwin Edenzon, while receiving $2,500 to purchase STEMrelated materials and resources to allow Team Fusion 364 to design and to build robots and to compete in FIRST Robotics competitions. With this grant from Ingalls, the Academic Institutes can tackle science, technology, engineering and math projects with a hands-on approach.

Please access the monthly calendar at DRESS CODE REMINDER: All young men are to have shirts tucked, and no sagging pants are allowed. Young ladies need to be mindful of the appropriate length (no shorter than 4 inches above the knee) of shorts, skirts, and dresses. Razor-back shirts and spaghetti strap shirts are not permitted. Cleavage must not be exposed. Donations to Art Classes Requested: Our art teachers are in need of junk for their students to use in their drawing studies. If you have odd items around your house that you would like to dispose of, please consider donating them to one of our art classes at GHS. Examples of great junk are vases, mugs, bottles, rotary phones, old washboards or other antiques, old instruments of any variety, plastic fruit, odd lamps, bird houses, bird cages, and plastic dinosaurs or other animals. Basically, any item that has a good shape to it would help our students with their drawing studies. Think of GHS while you do your spring cleaning. Thank you!
