10 What is the High Performance Athlete (HPA) Program? A specialized, cooperative education program, for students who are competing at the provincial, national and/or international level. In HPA, students practice and demonstrate, through a cooperative education program, the knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom, to their training/competition setting. The HPA program is made up of: the HPA cooperative education course; and a subject-related course. Students will be linked to a course relevant to their sport and training. They have to earned the credit already or currently taking the course that is linked.

11 A student may earn up to two co-op credits for each subject-related course they take. There is no limit to the number of credits a student can earn through cooperative education (Co-op) programming as long as you have a related course to link the Co-op to. HPA co-op is the same as any other curriculum course: it is taken for either a semester/full year; for 1 period. it has curriculum expectations; work is assessed by the Co-op teacher and the placement supervisor (in this case the coach or trainer); it meets the requirements for an OSSD and/or SHSM diploma

12 Who is it for? HPA is co-op programming tailored to meet the learning needs of students who are committed to focusing on their long term career objectives while accommodating competitive training needs. Criteria for consideration/acceptance into HPA programming is based upon: the # of hours committed to training; the learning needs of the student; level of competition; training season; completed application process; and a program readiness assessmenr Cannot come to NHS through HPA if not in catchment area. Coaches Reference Form To access HPA programming students must apply for Co-op and have a pre-placement interview with the teacher. Students and their parent/guardians must commit to the protocols set out in the HPA Protocol Agreement

13 What are the benefits of HPA programming? HPA programming provides students with an opportunity to: access individually tailored Co-op courses earn credits towards their OSSD while training and competing.

14 HIGH PERFORMANCE ATHLETE PROGRAM PURPOSE The purpose of this program is to enable exceptional student-athletes to reach their maximum academic potential while actively pursuing athletic training for higher-level athletics. RATIONALE Many of our students have achieved recognition at the Regional, Provincial and National levels in a variety of sports. In order to accommodate their special academic needs, we are offering a program which will enable them to co-ordinate their sports commitments with their diploma requirements through the following accommodations: Timetable considerations to facilitate high frequency training and competition time Provision of a program which will enrich the potential of the student-athlete and provide information for career development Support for the student-athlete for time-management, study skills, relaxation and subject tutoring where necessary. OBJECTIVES To provide an individual academic support program that accommodates the special needs of the student-athlete To provide a program that will stimulate learning for the student-athlete. To provide support for the student-athlete during their times of stress. To facilitate and coordinate the students academic program within the demands of the training program.
