1 7 TH GRADE COURSE SELECTION For the School Year

2 To be promoted to 7 th grade: PROMOTION TO 7 TH GRADE You must have an overall average of 70 or higher in all courses. You must also have an overall average of 70 or higher in 3 of the 4 core subject areas: 1. English and Reading 2. Math 3. Science 4. Social Studies Students who do not meet these requirements must either attend summer school or repeat the 6 th grade.

3 COURSE SELECTION PROCESS 1. Course selection presentations will be during SCIENCE classes beginning January 22 nd. 2. Take your course selection sheet home to share with your parents. Both you and your parent must sign the form! 3. Return your completed, signed/initialed course selection sheet to YOUR SCIENCE TEACHER by Thursday February 1st. 4. Students will meet with counselors to input 7 th grade course selections the week of February 20 th.

4 COURSE REQUESTS OVERVIEW Course sheets must be turned in to your Science Teacher by FEB 1st. If you are moving or planning to move, you must fill it out anyway. Both the student and parent must sign the course sheet. All students must sign up for the following courses: 1. English 2. Reading 3. Math 4. Social Studies 5. Science 6. PE or Athletics 7. One elective and two alternate elective

5 PREAP PROGRAM INFORMATION It is recommended that students meet the following criteria for PreAP classes: 1. Have an A average in the academic class, or a B average in the PreAP class. 2. Have parent approval. 3. Students taking PreAP English must also take PreAP Reading. The PreAP Course Commitment form is included on the back of the course selection sheet.

6 PREAP PROGRAM INFORMATION PreAP courses are designed to challenge motivated students and prepare them for success in advanced coursework. These courses: 1. typically move at a faster pace, 2. are academically challenging, 3. require more independent learning, and 4. require more homework than academic courses. The PreAP Course Commitment form is included on the back of the course selection sheet.

7 PREAP PROGRAM INFORMATION Students may exit a PreAP course during the first 6-weeks grading period or at the end of the 1 st semester. The student must have teacher and parent approval to exit. If the student s 6-weeks average falls below 70, it is recommended to exit the class at the end of the grading period. The PreAP Course Commitment form is included on the back of the course selection sheet.

8 GT STUDENTS Students must be screened and identified to be eligible for GT courses. If you are an English and Reading GT student, you will sign up for the combined GT English/Reading class G710. The combined GT English/Reading class will allow you to sign up for an additional elective.

9 PE & ATHLETICS All rising 7 th grade students will be placed in PE. Students may not sign themselves up for athletics. Please see the coach if you are interested in playing a sport next year. Coaches will give the counselors a list of students to be scheduled into the athletic period later this semester. Off Campus PE: Students who are participating in 5-14 hours of approved off campus PE training will have their PE class replaced with a study hall. If you participate in 15 or more hours, you may be released from campus after 7 th period.

11 Publications Yearbook* *Application required Career Readiness Spanish I, Part 1of 2 2 year commitment 7 TH GRADE ELECTIVES CONTINUED No high school credit is earned in 7 th grade. The full high school credit is earned in 8 th grade Spanish 1, Part 2 of 2.

12 OTHER COURSES Math Block - designed to help refine and review math skills in preparation for the STAAR test. Reading Elective - designed to help improve reading level and basic reading skills in preparation for the STAAR test. You will be recommended to take these classes if you do not pass the Math or Reading section of the 5 th grade STAAR test. This class will replace your elective.

13 REMEMBER! Course selection sheets are due to YOUR SCIENCE TEACHER by FEBRUARY 1 ST. Keep your course selection sheet neat and clean. Take good care of it! Choose your courses wisely think carefully about your choices. Talk to your teachers about PreAP placement. Choose the elective that s most interesting to you. List two alternate electives. Have your parent Sign your course selection sheet and you must return the course sheet on time!
