INTRODUCTION Welcome to Shaftesbury High School where we are proud to be the catchmet area high school for the studets of Lide Meadows, Va Walleghem, Charleswood ad Laidlaw Schools. We are the school of choice for just over oe hudred studets from aroud the city ad across the provice, we are home for over forty iteratioal studets as part of our divisio s Iteratioal Studet Program, as well as the host school for the RHA Natioals Boys Hockey studet athletes. This guide is provided to assist studets, parets ad guardias to better uderstad our school ad our school programs. 4 INFORMATION INCLUSIVE AUTHENTIC ACTIVE SCHOOLS OF CHOICE Uder Schools of Choice legislatio, parets/guardias ad studets have the ability to choose a school other tha their eighborhood school. There are certai resposibilities ad obligatios that parets/guardias ad studets must meet whe exercisig their right to choose a school. Some issues that may require further cosideratio are: program suitability, space availability, otificatio dates, ad trasportatio. Please ote the followig poits: Studets, parets/guardias wishig to exercise their right to choose a school may come directly to Shaftesbury to apply. Schools of Choice applicatios should be submitted as early as possible. Applicatios received after May 15 will be more difficult to accommodate ad are less likely to be accepted. Secod semester applicatios are more likely to be accommodated if they are received before September 30th. Oce a studet has bee accepted by Shaftesbury, the studet may atted our school util graduatio. Trasportatio for Schools of Choice studets is ot provided by the school divisio. INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PROGRAM Shaftesbury High School is a proud participat i the Pembia Trails School Divisio Iteratioal Studet Program (ISP). This program recruits studets from aroud the world to atted schools i the divisio. The Iteratioal Studet Program recogizes the importace ad the value of cultural awareess, both for studets comig to Caada to study ad for studet residets i our commuity. 4 Shaftesbury High School Regular cultural ad recreatioal activities are provided for iteratioal studets to assist them i learig about life i Wiipeg, Maitoba ad across Caada. Iteratioal studets have the opportuity to eroll i a full high school program at Shaftesbury High School. They are also able to make coectios with studets from aroud the world as Shaftesbury High School has over thirty coutries represeted withi the school populatio. The school climate promotes ad urtures global citizeship, multiculturalism ad diversity. For further iformatio about the Iteratioal Studet Program visit the website at Those families iterested i hostig ISP studets as Home Stay families are ecouraged to cotact the Iteratioal Studet Program office at STUDENT FEES Registratio is completed with the paymet of madatory studet fees. This fee etitles each studet to a yearbook, supervisio at luch, locks ad lockers, active livig ceter pass ad participatio i school activities (i.e. orietatios, barbeque, ad celebratios). A family with more tha oe studet attedig the school may choose to purchase oly oe yearbook ad thereby pay a reduced, family studet fee. The studet fee for the school year is $ THE SEMESTERS The school year is divided ito two equal parts (semesters). The first semester rus from September through to the ed of Jauary, ad the secod semester rus from February to Jue. Most courses are completed withi a sigle semester.

5 THE SCHOOL DAY AND TIMETABLE The school day cosists of five 68 miute istructioal periods. Studets are strogly ecouraged to select a balaced course load. Please ote, because of erolmet umbers, some courses may oly be offered i oe semester. Courses may ot be offered if there is isufficiet erolmet. Registratio occurs every witer for the subsequet school year. Courses for both semesters are selected at the time of registratio. Ay course chages after registratio will be subject to space availability. Note: At the time of witer registratio, studets goig ito Grade 12 will have preferece i course selectio over Grade 11 studets. Similarly, Grade 11 studets will have preferece i course selectio over Grade 10 studets ad Grade 10 studets will have preferece over Grade 9 studets. It is ot uusual for class lists to be fialized durig the first week of each semester. Paret-studet-teacher cofereces will be scheduled approximately 6 or 7 weeks after the begiig of each semester. The first report card will be issued approximately halfway through each semester. Fial report cards will be issued i February ad Jue. Teachers will sed progress reports home as eeded. Parets/guardias are ivited to cotact classroom teachers regardig ay questios or cocers about their child s performace. Accordig to Sectio 42.3(3) of the Public Schools Act, studets who reach the age of eightee are legally etitled to be the sole recipiets of iformatio with regard to their school progress. 8 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Maitoba Educatio requires that studets meet miimum criteria to be eligible for graduatio. Studets must complete a miimum of 30 credits. Studets must complete all of the desigated compulsory courses. A miimum of oe Grade 11 ad two Grade 12 credits from the available optioal courses list. Be hoest ad realistic whe makig these choices. 2. Studets should select courses which will be reasoably challegig ad ca be completed successfully. 3. Studets are ecouraged to cosult teachers, a member of the studet support services team, ad/or a school admiistrator whe selectig courses. I makig choices, studets should cosult the etrace requiremets of the uiversities, colleges, ad other post-secodary istitutios that they may pla to atted after graduatio. Specific iformatio is available from the studet support services team. HOW TO CHANGE COURSES Whe selectig courses at the time of registratio, studets are makig their choice for the etire school year. Studets ad their parets/guardias are ecouraged to cosider the followig: 1. I the evet that a chage is requested, some opportuity to adjust timetables exists. However, ay chages are subject to space availability. 2. Course chages for each semester should be made as soo as the eed is recogized. 3. Chages must be completed before the ed of four school days after the course begis. 4. Studets who eed or wat to repeat a course from the first semester, i the secod semester, will be accommodated oly where space permits. Studets may ot be able to take a course twice if demad is high. 5. Studets who do ot succeed at courses i the first semester may be required to make their ext attempt i the followig school year. Career ad commuity experieces uit may provide up to 46 hours i a workplace. Grade 12 Career Developmet: Life/Work Trasitio (CARDEV40S) Emphasis is o the trasitio from high school to post-secodary traiig ad preparatio for employmet. Career ad commuity experieces may sped up to 80 hours i a workplace. Law 40S (LAW40S) Studets will become familiar with the Caadia legal system. Topics covered i the course iclude; Historical Foudatios of the Caadia Legal System, The Caadia Charter of Rights, Copyright Issues, ad Huma Rights. The course also focuses o a comprehesive study of Crimial law, Private/Civil Law (tort, family, cotract, wills & estates, ad employmet law) ad the Youth Crimial Justice Act. DIGITAL MEDIA Computer Sciece 20S (CS20S) This course itroduces studets to the basics of computer programmig. Object-orieted programmig is emphasized usig multiple programmig eviromets, ad itroducig the Java programmig laguage. Topics iclude: computer hardware ad software kowledge, computer sciece history, ethics, ad career opportuities, itroductio to the Java programmig laguage, ad itroductio to game desig. NOTE: Studets takig this course are recommeded to be takig Grade 10 MIAP20S Computer Sciece 30S (CS30S) True object-orieted programmig usig the Java laguage will be taught as a foudatio for further study i Computer Sciece 40S. Studets will build o the topics itroduced i Computer Sciece 20S, cotiuig their use of the BlueJ programmig eviromet, ad itroducig the Gridworld ad Greefoot graphical programmig eviromets. More specifically, this course examies topics that iclude: camera care & settigs, photo-compositio, ciematography techiques, photo shoots, short film creatio, gree-screeig, editig digital art, lightig techiques, special effects, storyboard & scriptig ad displayig of works. Studets will use state-of-the-art software such as Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro ad After Effects. Digital Pictures ad Filmmakig III (IFP40S) This course builds o skills acquired i previous Digital Pictures & Film II ad III courses. Utilizig a studet-cetred ad a hads-o approach, the course focuses o the creative arrative of story-tellig though film ad photography. Creative writig, plaig, scriptig ad storyboardig will provide a course foudatio, ad will be combied with advaced techical photo, audio ad video skills/techiques to produce professioal ad polished media. Studets will explore their creativity though imagiatio, exploratio, ad experimetatio. Usig stateof-the-art hardware ad software, studets will work o various idividual ad group work to produce idividual multimedia assigmets, webpages, short-films, ad work to develop school promotioal videos. HUMAN ECOLOGY Home Ecoomics 10G (HEC10G) This course is desiged to provide a itroductory study of the three areas of Huma Ecology: Foods ad Huma Nutritio, Clothig Housig ad Desig ad Family Studies. Studets will pla ad prepare utritious meals, costruct basic garmets ad ivestigate persoal growth ad family relatioships. Clothig, Housig ad Desig 20G (CHD20G) Studets will explore the ature ad use of fibers ad textiles through the desig ad creatio of projects. Studets will have the opportuity to lear a variety of skills: practical (e.g., iroig, fabric care); techical (e.g., patter layout, sewig machie skills); ad creative (e.g., persoalize, project desig). Family Studies 30S (FS30S) This program focuses o paretig ad child developmet as see through the iteractive dyamics of the family uit. The course begis by lookig at families i a chagig world ad how the impacts of techology ad social chages have iflueced the family uit. The importat role of the family i meetig emotioal eeds, teachig values ad buildig strog family relatioships, effective commuicatio, ad coflict resolutio are emphasized. HOCKEY SKILLS ACADEMY Shaftesbury is the oly school i Pembia Trails to offer a Hockey Skills Academy for high school credit. The program is certified by Hockey Skills Caada ad is ru by the coaches of our boys team ad of the Tita Prep team. The Hockey Skills Academy allows studets to improve upo their idividual skills ad their ejoymet of the game. There is a strog focus o academics ad o developig the whole studet/player. The course is ope to begiers ad advaced players, male ad female, ad is iteded for studets who wat to participate i hockey-specific skill-developmet traiig i order to improve their game ad to advace their kowledge ad fitess levels. These studet-athletes gai kowledge i a variety of areas such as settig smart goals, the importace of teamwork, sports utritio, metal traiig, character buildig as well as a variety of life skills. Studets ot oly lear all of the ecessary developmetal skills to play the game of hockey, but they also focus o executio of skills such as game sese, read ad react, commuicatio, ad the importace of support. A additioal beefit of this program is to have healthy studets who are physically active ad who ejoy participatig i sport. The objective is to provide a formal traiig program withi the academic settig of the school with a commitmet to excellece i studet achievemet. 37 RHA NATIONALS The RINK Hockey Academy provides players a choice for the future of their hockey ad educatio developmet. Players who choose to atted the hockey academy do so kowig that they will receive the best o-ice, off-ice ad educatioal services for their growth as a player ad perso. A hockey academy does ot follow a typical hockey schedule of two practices ad oe or two games per week. Players practice four to five times weekly depedig o their game schedule, with those games takig place i a weeked or showcase touramet format.
