8 VIRGINIA BEACH CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETIC PROGRAM The purpose of the Virginia Beach Middle School Athletic Manual is to inform parents of policies set forth governing athletics and individual athletes at each school. 10 ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS All students must pass five (5) classes during the previous semester in order to be eligible to participate in interscholastic sports.

11 2.0 Grade Point Average Requirement for Interscholastic Activities The minimum grade point average (GPA) eligibility requirement for participation in interscholastic activities is 2.0. Summer school grades will be averaged with the second semester grades. Middle school students who do not meet the GPA requirement in a given semester have the option to use a one time waiver used only in the 8 th grade at Brandon Middle School. The GPA waiver may be used only once and only if all other Middle School League requirements have been met.

13 SIX SEMESTER RULE To be eligible in any interscholastic contest a student may not have been enrolled in the last three years of middle school for a period of more than six consecutive semesters, beginning with the semester in which he/she was enrolled for the first time in the sixth grade.

15 INSURANCE Adequate insurance coverage for an athlete is the responsibility of the parent or guardian. The school system purchases accident insurance for students for coverage while they are involved in secondary school interscholastic athletic activities. The insurance plan includes only those sports, which are under the supervision of the Virginia Beach Middle School League. It does not include sports clubs offered by individual schools. It must be clearly understood that no accident insurance plan is comprehensive. It is certainly possible that a child could be seriously injured resulting in sizeable medical costs for which parents are responsible. Serious injury could include, but is not restricted to, loss of bodily function, loss of organs or limbs, paralysis, and even death. The school system is again offering $ deductible insurance coverage without a premium cost to the parent. This secondary insurance covers only 70 % of the medical bills. Insurance information outlined on the following five pages is an attempt to briefly describe the insurance plan. It is not a copy of the policy.

16 PROCEDURE FOR MAKING A CLAIM The contact person(s) for insurance claims will be identified at the preseason meeting. Parents must make sure they follow the procedure listed below to help expedite payment by the insurance company: STEP 1: Pick up the claim form from the coach at school. STEP 2: Fill out parts 1 and 2. The parent or guardian must complete Part 2 and must sign the authorization and affidavit in Part 2. STEP 3: STEP 4: Take the claim form to the individual who was supervising the activity or the contact person for verification as a legal injury. The claimant will then take the claim form to the attending provider of services for his medical report. The claimant must send the original claim form to Tower Financial WITHIN 90 Days.

18 MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETIC TRAINING PRORAM Parents allowing their children to participate in middle school athletics accept the risk of injury. To help minimize the risk and to manage injuries when they occur, the Virginia Beach Schools employ athletic trainers to assist with coverage of middle school sports. The areas of focus for athletic training are: Prevention of Athletic Injuries Recognition, Evaluation, and Assessment of Athletic Injuries and Illnesses Immediate Care Concussion Education Treatment, Rehabilitation, and Reconditioning of Athletes CHKD serves as a liaison among athletes, parents, coaches, physicians, allied health professionals, student activities coordinators, and administrators to facilitate healthy participation in interscholastic athletics. Please note that due to the large scope of the athletic program, an athletic trainer may not be present at all practices and competitions.

26 Parent Meeting of Understanding

27 Concussion Information If your child is suspected of having a concussion during practice or a game and you are not present the trainer or coach will call you. It is mandatory that you come pick your child or be transported to nearest hospital. Your child will NOT be put on the bus. Please be available by phone while your child is practicing or competing. You will receive home instructions from person signing your child over to you. The nurse will call your child down the next day they return to school. If appropriate your child's teachers will be notified of their condition.

32 ALL PLAY RULE Not Required It is very difficult to accept your child not playing as much as you hope. Please note: Unlike Parks and Recreation program, VBCPS does not have an all play rule. Playing time is left to the discretion of the coach.

33 If you have a concern to discuss with a coach: Call the coach to set up an appointment. Please do not attempt to confront a coach before or after a contest or practice. These are emotional times for both parents and coaches. Meetings of this nature usually do not promote positive resolutions.

34 Practice Rules Practices are closed to all parents and spectators. It limits distractions for both students and coaches. Security concerns Unlike game days, after school hours we have (1) security guard, for the safety of our students all practices are closed.

35 Uniforms Due to the guidelines by the custodial services, uniforms may no longer be washed by our custodial staff. Each individual player s parents will be responsible for cleaning and drying uniforms. PLEASE PARENTS DO NOT USE BLEACH when washing and very LOW HEAT when drying. Our uniforms are custom colors and not stock colors. If a uniform is lost, stolen, bleached, or ruined in any other manner, the parent is responsible for replacing the uniform. Uniforms are on a 6 year cycle for each sport.

36 Home Events First Quarter Sports Football games that are played at Brandon all spectators must remain on the bleacher side of the field, no spectators are permitted on the track or on the football field. Admission to the games are $2 for adults and $1 for students K-12. Soccer games all spectators may sit on the track side of the field. Do not attempt to come over to the side where the players are sitting. Admission to the soccer games are free. Second and Quarter Sports All spectators must sit on the opposite side of the gym, you may not sit behind the bench. Let the coaches coach. Admission to the games are $2 for adults and $1 for students K-12.

37 Home Events Third Quarter Sports Volleyball & Wrestling spectators will sit on the opposite side of the players bench do not sit behind the players. Admission to the games are $2 for adults and $1 for students. Fourth Quarter Sports Baseball, Softball, Track, and Field Hockey admission to these events are free. Except for the city championships.

38 Traveling to Athletic Events All student athletes must travel on a school bus to and from an event. No student athlete can be taken home from an away event. No exceptions, except for medical emergencies. Pick-up/Drop Off after practice or games designated area will be the gym side parking lot.
