2 ABOUT CITY YEAR At the same time, we recognize that many children face obstacles that interfere with their ability to arrive at school every day ready to learn and achieve at high levels. Research shows that providing students with a positive relationship with a caring adult at school, individualized academic supports, and opportunities to develop social-emotional skills can dramatically improve students readiness to learn, and help keep students on track to high school graduation and adult success. Great teachers are critical and many students need more than a good lesson every day. There is a significant gap between the personalized support students need and what most schools have the capacity to provide. By partnering with teachers and principals to deliver individual student, classroom and whole-school support, City Year helps to bridge that gap. HOW CITY YEAR WORKS IN SCHOOLS AmeriCorps members are full-time support for students. All-day. Everyday. All-year. Additional capacity in the classroom, supporting classroom management and providing and enabling differentiated instruction Use of data to monitor student progress and better meet student needs One-on-one and small group instruction in ELA and math with embedded socialemotional support Extended-day activities: after-school programming, homework assistance, enrichment curricula and civic projects that build and serve community Small group social-emotional skill building sessions Whole school activities that improve conditions for learning, engage families and inspire civic engagement City Year provides a double bottom line by impacting students as well as AmeriCorps members. City Year Orlando not only transforms the future of young students, but also develops its 68 AmeriCorps members as engaged citizens equipped with the passion, skills and courage to continue making a difference long after their year of service. City Year Orlando strategically motivates, supports, and challenges AmeriCorps members to develop the skills to become effective leaders in the community and the workplace, building a pipeline of committed citizens. As our next generation of young leaders, AmeriCorps members help build a stronger democracy and a more competitive workforce. 2 2

3 ABOUT CITY YEAR ORLANDO Through the support and partnership of Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) and Volunteer Florida, City Year Orlando was launched in Today, City Year Orlando AmeriCorps teams serve in the following OCPS partner schools; Catalina Elementary, Jones High, Judson B. Walker Middle, Maynard Evans High, Meadowbrook Middle, Memorial Middle and Oak Ridge High. Annually, City Year Orlando directly serves more than 1,000 unduplicated students through targeted one-on-one and small group support and engages more than 10,000 students through whole school activities and initiatives. City Year Orlando is dedicated to improving educational outcomes for Orlando students most at risk of dropping out of school. Through our in-school and after school programs, full-time City Year Orlando AmeriCorps members work to keep students in school and on track to graduation. AmeriCorps members serve full-time in schools alongside teachers for the entire school year, connecting with students and providing evidence-based, integrated academic and social-emotional supports to help students and schools succeed. City Year AmeriCorps members have supplemented the work of teachers and provided critical support for our students psychologically, socially, emotionally and academically. - Dr. Barbara Jenkins, OCPS Superintendent 65% of off-track students (with a D or F) in math, who worked with a City Year Orlando AmeriCorps member, got back on-track (with an A, B or C)* City Year Orlando partner high schools are demonstrating significant increases in graduation rates. Oak Ridge High -City Year Orlando s founding school- increased their graduation rate by more than twenty points from 69% in 2012 to 89% in 2016** **Florida Department of Education school accountability reporting. Graduates are 59% of off-track students (D or F) in ELA, who worked with a City Year Orlando AmeriCorps member, got back on-track (A.B or C)* *Per City Year Orlando OCPS partner school data from the school year students who graduate in four years with a standard high school diploma. 3 3
