3 IB Curriculum DP Cohort students are preparing for IB classes 6 subject areas: Language & literature: American Literature (1600/1900) Language acquisition: Spanish, German, Chinese, French 300 Individuals & Societies: AP/US History Sciences: Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics, AP Physics Mathematics: Geometry, Algebra 2, Honors Algebra 2, Honors PreCalc The arts: Elective in performing or visual arts Summer School/Double SS option: Government and/or Economics Core Elements: all components will begin in 11th grade 3 core requirements Extended Essay (EE) DP Core Studies I Theory of Knowledge Creativity, Action, Service 3
4 Grades & Academic Standards Students will continue to receive BHS letter grades with an additional point (IB & AP classes only) The International Baccalaureate Organization requires that the school ensure IB Diploma candidates remain in good standing. Students with a grade of D or E are not considered in good standing. Failure to submit an internal assessment or other required DP component (Extended Essay, ToK paper, uploads, etc.) by the approved due date results in a failing condition and the student is not considering in academic good standing. A semester grade of E, D+, D, or D- in a DP course must be followed by a grade of C- or better in the next marking period and semester or the student must appeal to BHHS and/or IB Administration for continued enrollment. Juniors and Seniors who fail a non-dp semester course must make up the credit in the manner described for BHHS graduation requirements. 4
5 Grades & Academic Standards Seniors with a first semester grade of D+, D, or D- are not eligible to sit for the DP exam in that subject, thus jeopardizing their attainment of the IB diploma. Seniors with a D+ or lower for progress report three (in February) and report card three (March) will also not be considered in good standing and will not sit for the exams in those subjects. DP exam fees will not be returned if a student is considered not in good standing. *Students with special circumstances such as family tragedies, traumatic health issues and externally mandated diploma requirements may appeal this policy to the principal for individual consideration as needed. 5
6 IB Assessment Students are assessed on their ability to: analyze and present information evaluate and construct arguments Solve problems creatively Additionally, students are assessed on their ability to: retain knowledge understand key concepts apply standard methods 6
7 IB Assessment IB scales (1-7) are used to evaluate course performance when calculating the points needed for an IB diploma External assessments Online Exam Packet available in October Late April - Early May / May 2018 fees: $901 IB rarely offers late/alternate test dates--plan accordingly! Students may test in the following SL courses only: History, World Religions, Sports, Exercise and Health Science Internal assessments Teacher designed / IB criteria: throughout the school year Moderation Conducted by the IB and involves two stages: 1. IB criteria at the school/teacher level 2. If application of IB criteria is in question, an adjustment may be made (by the IB) 7
8 Awarding An IB Diploma The IB awards the IB Diploma, not BHHS Students must earn a minimum of 24 of the potential 45 points in order to earn the IB Diploma Six subject area courses 1-7 points per course / up to 45 points Complete CAS, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge 3 points are awarded from a combination of ToK and Extended Essay marks 8
