1 Gifted and Talented Lovejoy ISD

2 Overview This presentation is intended for parents and guardians that are referring their student for gifted and talented services. This session will: Define gifted and talented Identify general characteristics of gifted learners Provide an overview of gifted services Review the referral and notification process

3 Definition A gifted/talented student is a child or youth who performs at or shows the potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment ~TEC

4 Qualities Gifted students display an array of characteristics Every gifted learner is different Like every learner, there is not a single, defining characteristic Please do not consider general characteristics a checklist for gifted

5 Gifted and Talented Services G/T services are available K-12 K-2 Enrichment 3-4 Integrated Studies/Math 5-12 English, Math, Social Studies, Science

6 Gifted and Talented Services Gifted and Talented (G/T) classes are offered in the four foundation core subjects: English History / Social Studies Mathematics Science* (begins 5th grade)

7 Gifted and Talented Services Gifted and Talented courses are designed for the intellectually and academically gifted. Beginning in 6th grade, all core courses in Lovejoy ISD are Pre-AP. G/T sections are offered for each core course. Mathematics is advanced by one additional year.

8 Service Goals Emphasis on higher-level thinking skills Product-oriented learning to encourage creativity Develop decision-making skills Provide for social/emotional growth Develop self-directed, autonomous learners

9 What s Different? Accelerated and/or faster pace with less repetition Depth and complexity emphasized Socratic forums and debates Open-ended and inquiry based questioning Interactive project/problem- based learning

10 Gifted and Talented K-2 K-2 Academic Enrichment One-Day Pullout Approximately 3 hours per week

11 Gifted and Talented 3-4 Integrated Studies (English and Social Studies) and/or Math (acceleration/compacting begins) Students attend every day G/T teacher is the teacher of record

12 Gifted and Talented 5-6 English, Social Studies, Science, and/or Math* *Math is accelerated an additional year Students attend every day G/T teacher is the teacher of record Pre-AP classes begin in 6th grade

13 Gifted and Talented 7-8 7th and 8th Grade- Pre-AP G/T English 7th and 8th Grade- Pre-AP G/T Science 7th Grade- Pre-AP G/T Texas History 8th Grade- Pre-AP G/T US History

14 Accelerated Mathematics 7th Grade- G/T Algebra I Double Block (high school credit) 8th Grade- G/T Geometry Single Block (high school credit) *Students still take 4 years of math while in high school as part of the requirements for graduation.

15 Independent Studies 7-8 This elective course is a focused independent study for students with a deep interest in a field of study or in a specific topic within a discipline.

16 Gifted and Talented 9-12 Gifted and Talented courses are designed for the intellectually and academically gifted. LHS offers two levels of courses Pre-AP and AP. G/T sections are weighted the same as the corresponding Pre-AP or AP course. Students may choose to participate in G/T classes outside of their identified area, provided they maintain satisfactory progress (80%+).

21 Independent Studies This elective course is a focused independent study for students with a deep interest in a field of study or in a specific topic within a discipline.

22 Referral Process Complete referral form in PowerSchool Submit parent letter District collects teacher input Student assessment Student Profile District Review Committee

23 Fall 2017 Referral Window Be sure to complete the referral form in PowerSchool by September 8, 2017 Testing for grades 1-12 will be September 16 and 23 Parent notification will be mailed home in October Services begin October 2017

25 What criteria are used? The student profile is evaluated as a whole Students participating in Gifted and Talented Services in Lovejoy perform at or above the 96th National Percentile Rank (NPR) on nationally-normed achievement and ability assessments Placement recommendations are made for Math/ Science and/or English/Social Studies

26 Do I need to reapply? Once a student has been met criteria and accepted G/T services, there is no need to reapply, unless additional services are being requested Lovejoy ISD does not reassess (ie: 5th grade, 9th grade) If a student exits G/T services, the student must complete the referral process to be considered for services if they wish to re-enter G/T classes

27 What if I am transferring from another district (or out of state)? Records will be requested from the prior district Current (within 24 months) assessment scores will be reviewed within 30 days of enrollment Additional assessment(s) may be needed
