2 HISD HONORS BOARD MEMBERS January is School Board Recognition Month and Harlandale ISD joins districts across Texas in celebrating the hard work and dedication of these locally elected advocates for public education. This year s theme is All-Star Team and Harlandale ISD trustees are definitely deserving of that title. Messages of appreciation are posted on marquees throughout the district, elementary school students crafted creative thank you cards and a special dinner was held in honor of HISD Board of Trustees Carlos Quezada (President), Ricardo Moreno (Vice President), Christine Carrillo (Secretary) and members David Abundis, Erma Casarez and Juan Mancha. Surrounded by district administrators and campus principals, Superintendent Rey Madrigal thanked the Board of Trustees for giving their time and energy to ensure the success of Harlandale ISD. On behalf of the Harlandale ISD we are thankful for the leadership that is provided by our Board of Trustees, Madrigal said. Our board members serve as a guide to provide our students an excellent education while they also serve as a voice for the community. A few of their accomplishments in the past year include: Approving Harlandale ISD to host the 21st Century Grant, which gives students the opportunity to explore areas in STEM, yoga, dance and robotics Approving the refinancing of $9.6 million in bonds resulting in gross saving to the District Approving the addition of the TEKS Resource Systems to support the rigorous curriculum Harlandale ISD strives to offer Approving an insurance contribution increase and a 1.5 percent raise for all Harlandale ISD employees Successfully passing Bond 2015 and opening several new facilities across the district As a token of appreciation, HISD presented the Board of Trustees with a gift basket and a championship ring for the All-Star work they do day-in and day-out. p.2
3 MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER GETS ADAMS ES FIRED UP Adams Elementary School was flowing with enthusiasm after a special visit from motivational speaker Aric Bostick on Jan. 17. Bostick spent the whole day at the campus and motivated both students and staff members. We wanted to build community with our students and to give them a boost as we head towards STAAR testing time, Adams ES Social Worker Jennifer Montes said. With our staff, we wanted to also invigorate them and to provide some team building to unify our staff. Bostick kicked-off the day by sharing his own personal journey to third and fifth grade students. He showed them that no matter what obstacles may be in their way, there are always opportunities for them to succeed. We wanted our students to see that they have the power to improve themselves and to reach their goals in life, Montes explained. Sometimes, just a change of mindset can get students motivated to be more proactive in their own learning. We don t want our students to feel like they are just going through the motions at school. We hope they will take ownership of their own learning and strive to improve daily, not just for their teachers, but for themselves. During lunchtime, Bostick hosted a pep talk with six designated students. He spoke to them about making good choices and about choosing to succeed. He let them express their goals and the obstacles in their way. He mentioned to them that some obstacles can be easily overcome, while others may take time, but that they should never give up. Up next was the Student Leadership Training session. A select group of 106 students participated in this session. Bostick shared more about his story and the stories of kids he has met all over the country. He taught them leadership skills including, how to introduce themselves, how to confidently talk to new people. All faculty and staff, including paraprofessionals and custodial staff, attended the after school session where Bostick talked to them about being present and striving to bring their best each and every day. He encouraged them to be mindful of their students and how their home situations may impact their ability to be fully engaged in class every day. We were inspired by his messages and staff left the meeting already planning ways to improve their teaching and to engage with their peers, Montes said. The staff members weren t the only ones left inspired though. As he walked the halls, he was getting high fives, shouts of You re Awesome and hugs from students. As the kids left school at the end of the day, they were calling out to him from their cars and asking him to come back and visit again. On Wednesday morning, there was already a different vibe as students and staff arrived at school, Montes added. Adams Elementary has been FIRED UP! p.3
4 STEM ECHS DOMINATES ROBOTICS COMPETITION STEM Early College High School competed in the VEX Robotics Competition held at Pope John Paul High School in Corpus Christi, TX on Jan. 14. A total of five STEM ECHS teams entered in to the competition, two of which placed first and second respectively (Team 8451A and 8451D) in the qualifying rounds. Those two teams formed an alliance and went on to win the tournament. to the Top All Around Team (Robot Performance & Judged). Team 8451B received the Design Award, which is given to the team with the most professional design approach. Teams 8451A, 8451B and 8451D will be headed to the South Texas Championship which will be held at Nimitz High School in Houston on Feb. 15. This win marked Team 8451A s third straight tournament victory this season. Team 8451A also won the Excellence Award, which is given Way to go, Rattlers! p.4
5 HARLANDALE BRAVES COMPLETE HISTORIC SEASON Harlandale Middle School seventh grade student Joseph Rodriguez remembers his father telling him stories about winning a basketball championship during his time as a Brave. Now, Joseph can do the same one day. knew they had talent but more importantly, they played together. They weren t afraid to pass to each other. They didn t care who scored the points. All they cared about was coming out on top and playing as a team, Vasquez said. Joseph and the rest of the seventh grade boys basketball A team put together a perfect 12-0 record to bring home another championship to Harlandale Middle School. Harlandale Middle School Principal Richard Marroquin was happy to see the team come out on top but even more fulfilled by the student athletes themselves. My dad won a championship here at Harlandale Middle so I wanted to make history too, Rodriguez explained. Winning a championship could not have happened to a better group of student athletes. They are great on the court but they are even better young men off the court, Marroquin said. Leading the historic season was third year head coach Emilio Vasquez and assistant coach Frankie Lara. Vasquez explained his appreciation for the team s execution throughout the year but is most proud of the team s main characteristic - teamwork. What makes this team so special is their unselfishness. They The seventh grade boys basketball B team also won their tournament championship after entering the end of the year tournament as the lowest seed. The team went 3-0 on Jan. 14 to earn the championship at Brentwood Middle School. p.5
