1 D E T R O I T C O U N T R Y D A Y S C H O O L CONSERVATORY OF FINE, PERFORMING, AND COMMUNICATION ARTS GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

2 Conservatory of Fine Arts Vision: The Fine Arts component of the Conservatory of Fine and Performing Arts is designed to challenge the student who is passionate about Fine Art and has demonstrated a desire to develop their talent. This dedication will be achieved through a cohesive and sequential plan, under the guidance of professional artists/teachers. These mentors will define the artistic objectives of the individual student and give honor and recognition to their commitment to four years of Fine Arts at Detroit Country Day School. Student Expectations for the Conservatory of Fine Arts: Students will be expected to complete our foundation course Art and Design to understand the elements and principles of art as the building blocks for all art disciplines. Upon completion students have the opportunity to begin with the introductory course in any of the following areas: painting, drawing, photography, computer graphics, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry or fibers and textiles. Sequentially advanced levels within the area of their choice will follow and must be completed by the end of their sophomore year. Conservatory requires the completion of three semesters by the end of sophomore year. In the spring of their sophomore year the art teachers will meet to produce a list of students who they feel demonstrated talent and will make the commitment to fulfilling the requirements for the program. A portfolio review and interview will be conducted by the Fine Arts faculty. Final decision of acceptance will be made by the end of March of their sophomore year. Juniors and seniors cannot be accepted into The Conservatory of Fine Arts program unless they are a transfer student and previously completed the required number of classes. Student Requirements for the Conservatory of Fine Arts 1. A total of 8-12 ½ credit semester courses by the end of senior year (3 by end of sophomore year) in the area of 2-D or 3-D, designated as area of study at the end of sophomore year. 2. Demonstration of passion and commitment through production, attitude and creativity. 3. Strongly recommended AP Art History junior or senior year. 4. Required AP Studio Art senior year. 5. Submit a Scholastic portfolio consisting of 8 pieces of art. Pieces will be used for the Concentration section of the AP exam. 6. Required Senior Show at Celebrate the Arts. 7. Required entry into at least two art competitions through the course of four years. 8. Attendance at all AP studio meetings junior and senior year (required attendance of five meetings over two years). 9. Supplies: leather portfolio, photo print portfolio, tackle box containing 2 and/ or 3 D supplies, sketchbook. 10. Student is responsible to securely protect in their home all of their art work at the end of each year, as well as keep digital images of all their work. 11. 4 Conservatory of Theatre Vision: A training program that develops well-rounded theatre artists for their own enjoyment or in preparation for successful auditions resulting in admittance to the finest of University programs offering B.A. & B.F.A. degrees in Theatre. Student Expectations for the Conservatory of Theatre: For the student who just loves theatre or wishes to seriously pursue a career as a theatre artist, the Conservatory program focuses on: actor training, directorial experiences, theatre production and design, and a global view of theatre as it is reflected in unique ways around the world. Students wishing to participate in the Conservatory program are expected to fully engage in school productions and show consistent leadership in rehearsal and on-stage. Student Requirements for the Conservatory of Theatre: core credits in the theatre curriculum which include: CORE COURSES FOR ACTORS Theatre 1 Performance Foundations (1/2 credit semester course) Theatre 2 Performance Studies (1/2 credit semester course) Stagecraft Technical Theatre (1/2 credit semester course) Studio Theatre Ensemble Full year class (1 credit) may be taken up to three years (3 credits) in sophomore, junior and senior years (Theatre 1 and Theatre 2 are pre-requisites for enrollment in the Studio Theatre Ensemble) CORE COURSES FOR TECHNICIANS/ DESIGNERS Theatre Stagecraft (1/2 credit semester class) Theatre Design (1/2 credit semester class) Theatre 1- Performance Foundations (1/2 credit semester course) Technical Theatre Studio Full year class (1 credit) may be taken up to three years (3 credits) in sophomore, junior and senior years elective credits within the Performing & Communication Arts disciplines of music, dance and film as these are integral tools for the theatre artist. 3. Audition for school productions all four years and commit to working on-stage, with the technical crew or support production efforts through stage management and student assistant director assignments. Students are required to be part of four productions over their four years at the Upper School. Required participation includes; on-stage as actor, stage management / assistant director leadership role and/or stage crew in a technical capacity. 4. Student initiated and designed/ directed class productions as part of their course work in the Studio Theatre Ensemble class performed each semester. 5. Attend State Thespian Festival (first weekend in December) and participate in workshops and adjudication session at least once by their senior year.

5 Conservatory of Music Vision: The Detroit Country Day Conservatory of Music fully embraces the value and importance of training in music, and offers an enriched course of study for those students who are particularly dedicated to the pursuit of music scholarship and performance. Through extensive academic training and concert experience, the DCDS Music Conservatory student will be fully prepared to continue their musical journey at the collegiate level. Student Expectations for the Conservatory of Music: Conservatory designation requires private study outside of school and participation in performance activities beyond the classroom besides academic music classes and ensemble (choir, orchestra or band) participation for all four years. Student Requirements for the Conservatory of Music: 1. 4 credits (all four years / grades 9-12) of a curricular (choir, band or orchestra) performance class. 2. Successful completion of AP Music Theory UMU513H and the AP Exam. 3. Participate in MSVMA/MSBOA Solo & Ensemble (or equivalent festival for pianists.) 4. Audition for an advanced ensemble (Jazz Band, String Ensemble, and Bella Voce) junior and senior year. 5. Senior recital senior year, which can feature multiple instruments/performance genres (i.e. voice/piano, music/theatre, etc.) 6. Study their chosen instrument with a private teacher at least junior and senior year. 7. Participate in at least one musical theatre production junior and senior year (pit orchestra, chorus, or crew.). Sample Pre-Conservatory: Grade 9 Full year of Choir/Band/Orchestra Participation in Solo & Ensemble Member of Chorus/Pit Orchestra in musical (Optional) Grade 10: Full year of Choir/Band/Orchestra Participation in Solo & Ensemble Begin private lessons in voice or instrument Member of Chorus/Pit Orchestra in musical (Optional) Sample Conservatory: Grade 11: Grade 12: Full year of Choir/Band/Orchestra Participation in Solo & Ensemble and continue private study Member of Pit Orchestra/Audition for lead in musical Audition for Jazz Band/String Ensemble/Bella Voce Full year of Choir/Band/Orchestra AP Music Theory and continue private study Prepare and perform senior recital / college auditions

6 Conservatory of Dance Vision: A training program that develops well-rounded dancers/performing artists for their own enjoyment or in preparation for successful auditions resulting in admittance to the finest of university dance programs offering B.A. & B.F.A. degrees in Dance or Performing Arts. Student Expectations for the Conservatory of Dance: For the student who really enjoys dance and/or wishes to seriously pursue a career as a dancer or performer, the Conservatory program focuses on; skill training, performance experiences, and a global view of dance as it is reflected in unique ways around the world. Students wishing to participate in the Conservatory program are expected to fully engage in school productions and demonstrate consistent leadership in rehearsal and on-stage. Student Requirements for the Conservatory of Dance: core credits in the dance curriculum which include: CORE COURSES FOR DANCERS Dance Techniques 1 Performance Foundations (1/2 credit semester course) Dance Techniques 2 Performance Studies (1/2 credit semester course) Repertory Dance Ensemble Full year class (1 credit) may be taken up to three years (3 credits) in sophomore, junior and senior years (Dance 1 and Dance 2 are pre-requisites for enrollment in the Repertory Dance Ensemble) elective credits within the Performing & Communication Arts disciplines of music, theatre and film as these are integral tools for the dancer. 3. Students are required to be part of two productions over their four years at the Upper School. Required participation includes; on-stage as dancer, assistant to choreographer or equivalent leadership role.

7 Conservatory of Communication Arts - Film Making Vision: A training program that develops well-rounded communication artists in preparation for successful auditions/portfolios resulting in admittance to the finest of University programs offering B.A. & B.F.A. degrees in Film, Speech or the Communication Arts. Student Expectations for the Conservatory of Communication Arts: For the student who wishes to pursue a career in film or the communication arts, the Conservatory program focuses on: speech training, actor training, directorial experiences, film techniques, film analysis, and editing techniques. Students wishing to participate in the Conservatory program are expected to fully engage in the school Film Festival and show consistent leadership in class. Student Requirements for the Conservatory of Communication Arts: COURSES REQUIREMENTS FOR Film Makers 1. ½ credit in Forensics or Debate 2. ½ credit in Theatre 1 Performance Foundations 3. 2 credits in filmmaking a. ½ credit - Foundations of Filmmaking b. ½ credit Intermediate Filmmaking c. 1 credit Film Studio Production 4. ½ credit in Dance Techniques 1 or Beginning Music Theory 5. 1 credit in Film and Literature (English course) 6. 1 ½ credits in performing arts curriculum which include: a. Theatre 2 Performance Studies (1/2 credit semester course) b. Studio Theatre Ensemble Full year class (1 credit) may be taken up to three years during the sophomore, junior and senior years (Theatre 1 and Theatre 2 are prerequisites for enrollment) c. AP Music Theory (1 credit full-year course, must be able to read music) d. Dance Techniques 2 (1/2 credit semester course, prerequisite=dance Techniques 1) e. Dance Repertory Ensemble (1 credit full-year course, prerequisite =Dance Techniques 2) ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR Film Makers 1. Students are required to participate in Forensics or Debate for a minimum of one season. 2. Students are required to enter a minimum of four films in Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards. 3. Participate in the DCDS Student Film Festival by: a. Enter at least two films in both the junior and senior years b. Assist in running of the festival senior year. 4. Write and present a Senior Speech (to be approved by Communication Arts Conservatory Board) 5. Prepare a senior portfolio of eight films including a narrative, an art film, and a documentary.
