3 PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE Dear Seniors and Parents, The start of the second semester of the means the Class of 2018 is near the end of their four years at Selma High School. This last semester is critical for all seniors as they look to meet all the graduation requirements for their diploma and additional attendance requirement needed to participate in our annual graduation ceremony to be held on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. at Staley Stadium. This handbook is an important tool for both parents and seniors as it contains all of the information needed to make the end of the school year a success. Please note important dates and deadlines with your senior student so that all deadlines are met. A full list of contacts for Selma High School administration is listed in the handbook, so please call us with any questions you might have about dates and deadlines. All parents and seniors are reminded that participation in the graduation ceremony is a privilege for all seniors. In addition to meeting all of the graduation requirements for Selma High School, your senior must also meet the four year attendance requirement to participate in the graduation ceremony. Review this attendance policy and other requirements listed so that your senior is on track for participation in the graduation ceremony and on track for his/her diploma from Selma High School. 10 PAYING FOR COLLEGE FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID - Federal Financial Aid - Every senior should apply even if you believe you do not qualify because it is a necessary requirement for many other scholarships, grants and loans. Deadline to apply for the Fall 2018 school year is March 2 nd!!!! Never pay to fill out a FAFSA online -- use only the above website! 13 DIPLOMA NAME There are no choices regarding your name on the diploma; your full legal name will be on the document. Information regarding legal name changes went out prior to the distribution of this booklet. If you legally changed your name but did not inform the Registrar, please do so immediately. See Mr. Collazo if you have any questions. (Note: At graduation practice, you will be able to have a say in how you are introduced for the ceremony.) SENIOR INTERVIEWS & EECU Senior Interview preparation runs from January 8 26, 2018, in all senior English classes. Interviews with various Rotary members and other members of the community begin in the middle of February and may run through May. All seniors are expected to participate and complete a resume, cover letter, and application to be used for the interview. EECU will also put on the annual Wise-Up activities, February in the Senior English classes. ELIGIBILITY: 1. Must be at least a junior or senior in high school. 2. Must be academically eligible by the APRIL 6, 2018, grading period. 3. Must be free of debt. 4. Guests must be approved by MARCH 23, 2018: a. Guest must be classified as a junior or senior at the educational institution he/she attends; or b. Guest may not be older than 20 and must show ID. 5. A photo ID will be required at the door for all students and any guests! No exceptions!!! DRESS CODE: Formal attire should fall within these guidelines: Ladies: Dresses- No low v-cut backs, revealing fronts, or bare midriff will be allowed. Slits should not be above mid-thigh. Strapless and spaghetti strapped dresses are okay as long as they follow these guidelines. Gentlemen: No t-shirts, collarless shirts, or jeans will be allowed. Guys should be dressed in slacks and collared dress shirts. Hats are NOT allowed unless they are part of the overall theme of your attire! Please bring your clothing to Mrs. Lambert, Ms. Luviano, Ms. Loving, or Mrs. Sanikian beforehand if you feel it may be questionable. Students out of dress code will not be admitted into the Prom and will not be refunded. If found out of dress during dance, you may be asked to leave. 17 SENIOR TRIP- Eligibility The Selma High School Activities Director and Class of 2018 Advisors have planned an amazing trip for the Class of 2018 to celebrate with friends and classmates at an amazing venue Universal Studios. The Senior Class Trip is a privilege rather than a right. Forms, including the contract and in-depth information, are available in room 1005 or your student account. Seniors must meet the following eligibility requirements: Disciplinary Eligibility A student who has been in violation of any Ed Codes falling under 48900/48915 series and/or suspended for possession, consumption, and/or being under the influence of alcohol or any other controlled substance at school or at a school-sponsored activity during his/her senior year will be excluded from the Senior Class Trip. A refund of all payments will be given with the exception of the $60 deposit if the violation is before May 4, No refunds will be given if the violation occurs on or after the May 5, 2017 deadline, including the deposit. Students will be notified of ineligibility. Academic Eligibility A student will not be eligible to participate in the senior trip if he/she is not in Good Academic Standing by the May 18, 2018, grade report. Good Academic Standing means academically eligible and on pace to graduate with no F s in a required class per the Learning Director. A refund will be given for all payments except the initial $60 deposit. Students will be notified of ineligibility. Attendance Eligibility A student will not be eligible to participate in the senior trip if he/she has accumulated a total of 40 days of unexcused absences by May 18, 2018, regardless of how many makeup days are available. A list of those ineligible due to attendance will be provided to the Activities Director by the Assistant Principal. Students will be notified of ineligibility. All participants are pending final approval by site administration. Financial Eligibility The total trip cost is $190, which includes a $60 non-refundable deposit. Trip must be paid in full on or before April 27, Fundraising money that is earned cannot be refunded or transferred to another account for any reason. Forfeiture of Eligibility Violating standards of acceptable behavior while on the trip will result in one or more of the following: Being sent home prior to the conclusion of the trip at the parents expense Being financially responsible for any damages to property while on the trip Being denied the privilege of walking in the graduation ceremony Being liable for any other penalties imposed by the local police, the Selma High School Administration, the Superintendent, or the Board of Education Eligibility and Refunds Students must meet the above criteria to remain eligible for the trip. The $60 deposit is non-refundable. All other payments are refundable (with the exception of fundraised monies) if a request is made to Mrs. Lambert by May 18, No refunds after May 18, 2018, can be given out. 15

If you don t pay for your yearbook (or make a deposit of at least $40) by Friday, January 26, 2018, there may not be another chance to buy one at a later date! 20 BACCALAUREATE This non-denominational service to honor the Class of 2018 will be held on: Tuesday, June 5, 2018, 7:00 PM The Worship Center 2830 East Manning Avenue, Fowler, CA Baccalaureate is a more personalized service to celebrate the accomplishments of both the graduates and families of the graduates. Attendance is not mandatory; however, all graduates are invited and encouraged to attend. The Baccalaureate program is produced by the Selma High Senior Class Officers and features Selma High students and faculty. Seniors wear their graduation gown and stoll to the event. Participating in the graduation ceremony is not a right. It is a privilege! 20

23 SCHOOL BOARD POLICY SCHOOL BOARD POLICY 5127(a) COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES AND ACTIVITIES Students must complete all district adopted graduation (course and credit) requirements prior to participation in such exercises. Plans to complete said requirements at a later date are not sufficient. For purposes of this regulation, ceremony shall refer to commencement exercises and does not denote that participants will receive a high school diploma. Students who have passed the California High School Proficiency Examination or the General Education Development Test (GED) must also meet district graduation requirements in order to participate in said ceremonies. Disciplinary Considerations In order to encourage high standards of student conduct and behavior, the principal may deny a student the privilege of participating in commencement exercises and/or activities in accordance with school rules. 1. A student may not be a participant in more than one fight. 2. A student may not receive more than two off-campus suspensions. 3. A student may not receive more than two referrals for violation of the district Honesty Policy. 4. A student may not have more than one violation of any of the following illegal activities: a. Stealing as delineated in Education Code (value of $50 or more). b. Possession or consumption of alcohol at school or a school activity or traveling to and from school or a school activity. c. Possession or under the influence of illegal drugs at school or a school activity or traveling to and from school or a school activity. d. Vandalism that meets or exceeds $100 worth of school or personal property 21

24 SCHOOL BOARD POLICY Con t Attendance Requirements for Participation in the Commencement Exercises Students may not miss more than 40 days (240 periods) of school over four years, excluding absences verified in writing by a licensed medical provider and school-related activities approved by site administration. Students may make up absences that exceed the numbers designated above by attending unassigned Saturday School sessions. Unassigned Saturday School is defined as voluntary attendance at Saturday School that is not assigned due to a disciplinary action. Attendance at four hours of Saturday School will constitute one (1) day or six (6) periods of absence. Students may make up a maximum of 30 school days (180 periods) per school year or a total of 120 days (720 periods) over four years by successfully completing unassigned Saturday School sessions. SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP RECEPTION Thursday, May 24, :30 p.m. SHS Dining Hall This event is for all seniors who received a local scholarship. Recipients will be notified in advanced and expected to write a thank you card to each donor. The thank you card can be presented to the donor at the scholarship reception. 23
