13 Cost of Post-Secondary ** Costs vary by program and institute ** 1. College: approx. $250-$500 a course + fees approx. $300 + books $600-$ living expenses 2. University: approx. $600 - $800 a course + fees approx. $600 + books $1000-$ living expenses Full-time studies could cost you well over $8000 a year for 8 courses or more. Then you need to add living expenses on top of that. If you are an International student it will cost you 2-3X more. Taking advantage of the University Transfer Credits option is a great way to save on tuition and transition to a degree program at university

24 Workplace Math 10 & 11 Workplace Math 10 Workplace Math 11 Formerly called Apprenticeship and Workplace Math, this course is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical thinking skills identified for entry into the majority of trades and for direct entry into the work force. Students will continue to focus on the mathematical processes learned in Math 8 and 9. Course will concentrate on algebra, geometry, measurement, number sense with practical applications, and trigonometry. Students and parents are encouraged to research the admission requirements for post-secondary programs as they vary by institution and by year.

25 Foundations of Math versus Pre-Calculus & Calculus Foundations of Math 11 Foundations of Math 12 Foundations of Mathematics & Pre-Calculus 10 Pre- Pre- Calculus Pre- Calculus11 Foundations is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical thinking skills identified for post-secondary studies in both the arts and some sciences. Calculus 12 Students are advised to select the level of math that they are able to achieve as well as research specific post-secondary entrance requirements for the program of study.

Students can request Math enrichment from teachers

31 Argyle Leadership How does it work? Students will take on leadership roles in the following areas: 1. Coaching Basketball, Volleyball, Track and Field, etc. 2. Teaching Assistant Assist in the delivery of course curriculum to both elementary and junior high school students 3. Community Organize and execute selected events in both the school and surrounding communities Students will choose their placements based on their personal interests Students must be very responsible and willing to commit to significant hours of out-of- school activities

32 Career Programs Career Programs at Argyle (application required): 1. Co-op students gain exposure to a workplace in a field of employment that interests them Earn course credits towards high school graduation Please talk to Mr. Shaw before you sign up. 2. Internship allows students to gain skills & knowledge from a work placement for 100 hours while still taking academic courses.

33 Trades and Apprenticeship Training Programs Secondary School Apprenticeship Program Students can earn up to 16 credits towards their high school graduation and accumulate hours towards their apprenticeship. Must register through Mr. Shaw Accelerated Credit Enrolment in Industry Training (ACE-IT) Cooks Training and Carpentry - equivalent to first level apprenticeship training. Student would be cross-enrolled at both Vancouver Community College/West Vancouver Secondary and Argyle Secondary

57 Other Options for earning Graduation Credits External Credentials: Credits earned through extra-curricular activities (sports, dance, music, etc ) Language Course Challenge: Receiving credits for a course without having to take it by testing if a student has met the learning outcomes for a similar course (Delta School District registration October exams in January)

58 Study Block Applications Things you should know before choosing a Study Block: Some universities look at total number of courses and not just GPA A study block does not earn graduation credits, which may impact post-secondary options. It is your responsibility to check. Students may apply if you meet ALL of the following criteria: You are a Grade 11 or Grade 12 student You have a challenging academic course load or extraordinary extracurricular commitments You have a good attendance history (grades 8-12). You have a good record of citizenship. Do Not list Study Block as one of your 8 Course Requests. Instead, state on your Study Block Application which of your elective choices you would like to give up in place of a study block Study Block applications are available on the Argyle website or in Student Services and must be handed in with your Course Request form by March 9 th
