Athletic Department Affiliations Southwestern is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) KCAC Member Institutions: Bethany College Bethel College Friends University Kansas Wesleyan University McPherson College Oklahoma Wesleyan University Ottawa University Southwestern College Sterling College Tabor College University of Saint Mary York College Athletic Department Policies and Procedures The following statements of policy will be used as the guideline for administration of the athletic department at Southwestern College. Responsibilities of the Southwestern College Athletic Program and Participants *The athletic department is committed to providing resources and opportunities for those who wish to compete in their sport of choice. The department is expected to administer itself within the construct of higher education promoting improvement in the physical and mental well being of its members through athletic competition. The athletic department is expected to support and represent the Mission of Southwestern College- Southwestern College provides a values-based learning experience that emphasizes intellectual, personal, and spiritual growth. *Student-athletes, coaches and fans bear the responsibility of representing the mission and objectives of Southwestern College at all times. The athletic department seeks to provide the best possible environment for the student-athlete to prepare, practice, and compete. Institutional support is realized through budget allocation, coaching salaries, equipment purchase, game management, and travel expenses.

*The coaching staff is required to provide the best possible environment for personal development in all aspects of the student-athlete experience. The coaching staff is expected to recruit student-athletes that possess the academic capacity and willingness to compete academically and ultimately matriculate. * Coaches are required to monitor the academic progress of the student-athlete * Coaches are encouraged to advise student-athletes of their support options * Coaches are required to provide adequate time for academic pursuits * Coaches are required to organize and plan practice/training sessions that are challenging, productive and efficient. Responsibilities of the Student-Athlete To be a member of the Southwestern College Athletic Department is a privilege which must be earned by each student s academic and athletic promise and continuing performance. Student-athletes who participate in intercollegiate athletics become a member of a team. By accepting this privilege of team membership, the student-athlete accepts the following responsibilities in the areas of student conduct and academic performance. Student Conduct As an ambassador of the College, it is critical you recognize the importance of good conduct. The image of the entire campus and community can be positively and negatively impacted by the conduct of one individual. All student-athletes are bound by the Southwestern College Student Code of Conduct. The Code contains the rules and regulations governing the community. The student-athlete will be held to the highest standard of the student code of conduct and will be subject to its policies. Violation of the conduct code will result in action by the Student Life Office. Furthermore, all studentathletes are bound by the rules of the athletic department and the coach of his/her sport. Offenders may be subject to athletic department or team sanctions above and beyond what is applied by the Student Welfare Committee. Alcohol, Drug and Tobacco Policy It is a privilege to be a student-athlete at Southwestern College with the opportunity to represent the college both on and off the field of play. With this train of thought, the Department of Athletics believes that drug testing is an appropriate measure to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of our student-athletes, and to promote fair competition in intercollegiate athletics. The use of illegal drugs, misuse of legal drugs, dietary supplements, and use of performanceenhancing substances are inconsistent with the standards expected of student-athletes at Southwestern College. The full policy is available at

ATHLETIC TRAINING ROOM RULES The sports medicine staff, including student athletic trainers, are committed to providing our intercollegiate student-athletes with the best possible health care. Student-Athletes are expected to treat Sports Medicine staff in a professional, courteous, and respectful manner. The athletic training room is a healthcare facility and should be treated as such. Only Southwestern College student-athletes and staff are permitted in the athletic training room. The athletic training room will not be used as a lounge. All student-athletes must sign in daily for each and every treatment. DO NOT GO TO THE DOCTOR OR HOSPITIAL ON YOUR OWN CHECK WITH THE SPORTS MEDICINE STAFF FIRST. Any student-athlete with a new injury/illness must notify the sports medicine staff immediately so that coaches can be updated on the status of the student-athlete. Taping and treatments will be administered on a first come, first served basis though at times, in-season sports may have priority. Always arrive early for practices because taping and/or treatment will not be an excuse for being late. All return to play decisions will be made by the sports medicine staff and/or doctor. The athletic training room is a co-ed facility. Minimum dress of shirts and shorts is required at all times unless the removal is necessary for medical treatment. No one is permitted in the athletic training room without the supervision or permission of the sports medicine staff. Unless otherwise directed, student-athletes are not permitted to treat themselves or dictate their own treatment. All treatments are at the discretion of the sports medicine staff. No shoes are to be placed or worn on the taping or treatment tables. No cleats, turf shoes, or other outside shoes are permitted in the athletic training room. Student-athletes should refrain from loud and obnoxious behavior profanity will not be tolerated. No tobacco products are permitted in the athletic training room. The athletic training room s telephones, televisions, and stereo are for certified staff only. DO NOT remove equipment or supplies from the athletic training room without permission from the sports medicine staff. Student-athletes will return all equipment and supplies (crutches, boot, wraps, etc.) as soon as they are no longer needed. Student-athletes may be charged if they are not returned. It is the student-athlete s responsibility to wear required protective equipment (helmet, mouth guard, braces, pads, etc.). The sports medicine staff reserves the right to refuse treatment if a student-athlete is late.

If a student-athlete does not adhere to the rules of the athletic training room, he/she can lose the privileges of using the facility. Coaches will be notified of any student-athlete who is not being compliant. Athletic Department equipment issue and return The College has purchased the necessary equipment needed to practice and compete via budget dollars allocated to each sport. The equipment that is issued to you is your responsibility while in your possession. Mistreatment and neglect will not be tolerated. Student-athletes may be billed for lost, stolen, or mistreated equipment. The individual sport coach is responsible for monitoring the treatment and life cycle of their team s equipment. Student-athletes are expected to use the equipment provided for them unless permission is granted by the sport coach. Team Gear Due to budget constraints, it is impossible for the College to provide each student-athlete with team workout gear and travel apparel. Each sport is unique in their team gear needs and abilities to fundraise for such purchases. Therefore, the student-athlete may be asked to purchase such items. Each individual sport coach is responsible for the team gear order and payment of such order. Weight Room As a student-athlete you are expected to make use of the facility. Please realize the facility is a community facility and therefore will be accessed by many different populations. Open times are posted and will be assigned through the Weight Room Coordinator. These times are priority only and still open to the general campus community. It is expected that all-student athletes will be courteous of other users and respectful of the equipment. Travel Travel to and from athletic contests will be in vehicles provided by the College. Only members of the athletic teams or members of their official travel party may travel in the vehicles. All members are encouraged to dress accordingly when traveling and will consult with their coach for instruction. Student-Athletes are expected to depart with the team both on the way to the site and on the way home. Exceptions to this policy may occur when an athlete wishes to travel with their parents or legal guardian. Prior permission must be obtained from the head coach or athletic director before such travel is to occur. When traveling the student-athlete is the responsibility of the coach and the university. Team and institutional policies are in effect and student-athlete conduct is expected to be appropriate.

Social Media Guidelines Student-athletes and staff members are asked to use discretion when participating in social networking avenues. For good or for bad, you are always "on the clock" when it comes to representing Southwestern College and your programs. Student-athletes are representatives of Southwestern College and are in the public eye more so than other students. Assume anything you post on your personal account could be read by Southwestern College staff, teammates, classmates, opposing teams, recruits, alumni, parents or other family members, media members, a current employer, future employers or coaches, and even Southwestern College security or local law enforcement. What is social media? Social media connects people in various corners of the world, helping to build relationships through social interaction using highly accessible communication techniques Examples include Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, Instagram, Tumblr, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Flickr, blogs, etc. Best practices Remember that the Internet is permanent (Including Snapchat) Avoid posting offensive or inappropriate language, pictures, videos or comments Ensure content posted on these sites does not depict inappropriate or illegal activities Don't post anything you wouldn't say in a public forum when representing Southwestern College, or anything you wouldn't say to the media Be in the right state of mind when you make a post - don't post when you're angry, upset, or your judgment is impaired in any way Check your privacy settings. It is recommended that the strongest security settings be used for Facebook, and that student-athletes have "protected tweets" on Twitter, wherein only approved followers will be able to view tweets Never post your home address, local address, phone number(s), birth date or other personal information. Additionally, it is recommended that student-athletes do not include their location in social media posts. Understand that anything posted online is available to anyone in the world - any content placed online becomes the property of the site(s) and is completely out of your control the moment it is placed online, even if you limit access to your page Ensure any information placed on the website(s) does not violate College, athletic department or student-athlete codes of conduct Do not comment on athlete injuries, rosters, playbooks, officiating or any other team information that should be kept confidential

Student-athletes and members of programs are asked to refrain from discussing scrimmages and results of scrimmages on social media. Student-athletes could face discipline and even dismissal for violations of team, department, College and/or NAIA policies. Student-Athlete Handbook Acceptance Form I have read, understand and accept the contents regarding my responsibilities as outlined in the Student-Athlete Handbook. Upon signing this form, I understand that non-compliance may result in removal and/or suspension due to violation of responsibilities.
