2 ABOUT US VISION & MISSION Wellington College International Tianjin is the first international partner school of the highly prestigious Wellington College in the UK. Opened in 2011 on a purpose built campus in Tianjin, China, Wellington is a vibrant and popular co-educational school offering a top class British education for pupils aged 2-18 years. 3 CURRICULUM CURRICULUM YEARS 10 & 11, KEY STAGE 4 (Equivalent to US grades 9 & 10) YEARS 12 & 13, KEY STAGE 5 (Equivalent to US grades 11 & 12) Students follow a two-year course preparing them for the British General Certificate of Secondary Education and International General Certificate of Secondary Education examinations. Students follow one of two paths. A Levels or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme This includes compulsory examinable courses in Maths (12% of curriculum time), English (16%), and Science (24%). In addition students choose four optional subjects each occupying 12% of curriculum time. The choice of option subjects is balanced across the areas of Languages, Humanities, Technological and Creative subjects. A Levels Students follow courses leading to the British Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level and Advanced (A) Level examinations. Most students study four AS Level subjects in Year 12 and carry on either three or four of these subjects to full A Level in Year 13. Each subject is taught for 5 hours each week plus homework assignments. Additionally, all students are expected to do three activities of their own choosing after school each week. An AS Level course is equivalent to half an A Level course both in terms of time and stature 03 04

4 CURRICULUM GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA) The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Students study six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. They must choose a first language, a foreign language, a humanity, a science and maths. They may choose a second one of one of these or opt for an enrichment subject such as Visual Arts or Music. Whilst we use I/GCSE and IB grade criteria to assess student attainment, for the purposes of US college applications, we have converted students attainment grades into a GPA using the conversion guidelines offered by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Higher Level subjects have 4 and Standard Level 3 taught hours per week plus homework assignments. As such we operate on a 4 point GPA scale incorporating students final I/GCSE and IB grades along with their assessment grades throughout their I/GCE and IB courses. Additionally, students must complete a Theory of Knowledge course, a 4000 word Extended Essay and a minimum of (hours) Creative, Action and Service (CAS) activities. 5 GRADING SYSTEM ACTIVITIES & SERVICES Students sitting for I/GCSEs and A Levels are graded according to the grading system as defined by the Joint Council for Qualifications (UK nationalised grading system). Similarly the International Baccalaureate Organisation defines the grading system for the IBDP. Assessments are criteria-based, defined by attainment descriptors for each course, not by statistical percentages. Students receive both a full written report with a grade on their progress at the end of each term and each half term they receive an interim report which focuses upon their attainment and effort. This progress grade is based upon their attainment against the published A/AS or I/GCSE grade descriptors and gives an indication of their expected outcome at the end of their I/GCSE and IB courses. As an integral part of the ethos of the School, all students are expected to take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities whether sporting, cultural or creative. The School competes in the World Scholar s Cup and annually sends delegations to the Model United Nations in Tianjin and Shanghai. The School successfully competes in a wide range of sports in tournaments with other international schools in Tianjin and Beijing. There are a range of intra-school competitions to designed to build a friendly competitive spirit amongst the students in a range of sports, debating and music. A strong sense of service is encouraged with students expected to lead the organising of events to help with a range of natural disasters and longer-term projects.
