Male Inspirational Story South Laurel s Sawyer Smith won the TRISPY for Male Inspirational Story of the Year presented by First National Bank of London. Sawyer gave a short speech after accepting the award. Corbin s Harleigh Grubb won the TRISPY for Female Inspirational Story of the Year presented by First National Bank of London. Grubb was unable to attend the event but her mother, Jamie Grubb (right) accepted the away for her and read a text her daughter, who is out of the country on an education trip, sent. Harleigh Grubb plays both basketball and softball at Corbin High School. She has overcome two torn ACL s in a row. In 2014 she tore her ACL playing basketball, which caused her to miss the 2015 season. Exactly one year later, in basketball practice, she tore her same ACL as well as her meniscus, causing her to once again miss the 2016 softball season. She has battled through the physical recovery and the even heavier mental and emotional recovery. She has proven to all those around her how hard she will work to achieve her goals and help her tam. She has shown her team how hard she will push herself to help her team. In the classroom she has taken AP classes in US Government and Politics, Chemistry, English I and II, Algebra, Biology and World Civilization, and dual credit classes in Trig/Pre-Cal, Music Appreciation and Sociology. He has a 4.6 weighted GPA, 4.0 unweighted, and she will earn 12 college hours this year as a high school sophomore. She s a four year member of the basketball and softball team, Future Educators of American, Junior Historical Society and Pep Club. She is active in her church youth group and attends Winterfest, Church Camp and Spiritfest every year. She participates every year in the Corbin High School Youth Service Center Redifest and has done numerous community service events. She will travel to Costa Rica this summer on an educational trip with her Spanish teacher and a small group from Corbin High School. She will also spend two weeks at Harvard University in a pre-college program where she will take a US Government and Constitutional Law class. Sawyer Smith overcame two concussions in two years to come back and help the South Laurel Cardinals soccer team to a region championship. He received his first concussion during a junior varsity game basketball game against North Laurel two years ago. He was flown to UK after the accident because he was paralyzed or a short period of time. He did not return to school that year, but because of his grades prior to the accident and him not willing to let the injury get the best of him he maintained an A average. He did not return to play basketball the next school year, but he did return to soccer at the end of the season only eight months after a major concussion. He has maintained his grades throughout the process and worked his way to being in the top three in his class. He returned this past season to soccer and received another concussion that could have ended his playing career, but once again he was determined to not be beat and not only did he return to the team, he was named Offensive MVP in both the district and region tournaments. Throughout the injuries and the work he put in to return to soccer he has maintained his position as one of the top three in his class, a 4.0 grade point average while taking a very rigorous academic schedule, and once he competes his senior year he will have taken most if not all of the AP classes offered at South Laurel. Weston Griebel is the definition of student-athlete. He s elite both in the classroom and on the baseball diamond at North Laurel High School. In the classroom, Griebel had a 4.0 grade point average and achieved a 33 on the ACT. He was senior class president and class salutatorian. He graduated summa cum laude and was vice president of the National Honors Society and a member of the BETA Club. He also received the Jonathan Hooker and Scarlett Parsley Hooker Memorial Scholarship. Griebel helped lead North Laurel to a 49th District title and a 13th Region runner-up spot. Griebel was coming off being named the th Region Player of the Year. In 24 games he batted.427 with 15 singles, 12 doubles and five home runs while driving in 25. He had an on-base percentage of.494 and a slugging percentage of.787. On the mound he finished with a 2-0 record, allowing just eight hits in 12.2 innings pitched while striking out 25 and walking seven. An injury to his shoulder didn t allow him to pitch until the final couple of weeks of the season. Griebel will be attending the College of Engineering at the University of Kentucky this fall. He received the Presidential Scholarship and will be participating in the Lewis Honors Program. Laura Richardson is a highachieving student-athlete on the Whitley County Lady Colonel volleyball team. While she played a role on her team with two consecutive 51st District MVP awards and 13th Region all-tournament team honors, she also exceeded in the classroom with the recognition as a Kentucky Governor s Scholar. The Governor s Scholars Program provides in-state tuition to the top students of Kentucky after selecting students from a compilation of test scores, volunteer service, awards and honors. She spent five weeks at a Kentucky college in order to become a better leader with the best and brightest of Kentucky. Also, Laura was recognized as a Rising Scholar, a Presidential Scholar, and a Lester Scholar at the University of Kentucky. The Presidential grants students fulltuition based on ACT scores and the Lester is an engineering scholarship for students who have a math ACT score of a 33 and a composite score of a 30, which she exceeded by two points. She was nominated and elected by her peers and advisors to lead both the Beta Club and National Honor Society as president. Along with that she took on other leadership roles in Male Student-Athlete North Laurel s Weston Griebel received the TRISPY for Male Student-Athlete. Female Student-Athlete Whitley County s Laura Richardson received the TRISPY for Female Student-Athlete. the school as the sophomore and junior class president in her respective years. Laura did all this while participating in Horizon Club volleyball, being a yearbook editor, volunteering, and being a part of two 13th Region championships with the Whitley County Lady Colonel volleyball team. She has maintained an unweighted 4.0 grade point average in her advanced placement and dual credit courses through the University of the Cumberlands. She will go on to the University of Kentucky in the fall as a materials engineering major. Debit Cards are issued in an instant at any of our four convenient locations. Opening a new account?
