3 MIDDLE SCHOOL & HIGH SCHOOL MAGNET CHOICE SCPS PRE-IB PREP ELIGIBILITY FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL Students must reside in Seminole County and have successfully completed the 5th grade. The magnet middle schools are composed of both in-zone and out-of-zone students. All out-of-zone students who are residents of Seminole county have the opportunity to apply to the magnet middle school of their choice. By signing the Middle and High School Magnet School/Program application, parents and students agree to the statements listed on the application. ELIGIBILITY FOR HIGH SCHOOL Students must reside in Seminole County and have successfully completed the 8th grade. By signing the Middle and High School Magnet School/Program application, parents and students agree to the statements listed on the application. ADMISSION Out-of-zone students must submit an application for admission to a magnet middle school. ALL high school students must submit an application for admission to a magnet high school program. COMMITMENT If selected, the out-of-zone student will remain in the program for a minimum of one year as long as all magnet requirements and commitments stated on the application are fulfilled. TRANSPORTATION Transportation is provided to students living more than two miles from the school. Out-of-zone magnet students meeting the criteria for transportation may be subject to bus rides up to 90 minutes each way (less than 10% of routes are 90 minutes). Centralized bus stops for out-ofzone magnet students may be located up to 1.5 miles from a student's residence. APPLICATION FACTS There is sibling link for the applicant who has a sibling that will be enrolled in the same magnet school/ program for the school year.* All four magnet middle schools offer the SCPS Pre-IB Preparatory Program (See page 4). Out-of-zone students indicate their interest in the SCPS Pre-IB Preparatory Program on the Middle and High School Magnet/Program Application. In-zone students may select SCPS Pre-IB Preparatory Program on their middle school course selection sheets completed with guidance counselors in the spring. PROGRAM LINKS Students who complete the 5th grade at Goldsboro Elementary Magnet School have a magnet program link to Sanford Middle School.* Students who complete the 5th grade at Midway Elementary School of the Arts have a magnet program link to Millennium Middle School.* Students who complete the 5th grade at Hamilton Elementary School of Engineering and Technology have a magnet program link to Milwee Middle School* Students who successfully complete the SCPS Pre-IB Preparatory Program have a program link to Seminole High School IB or Winter Springs High School IB.* Students who successfully complete the 8th grade at Milwee Middle School have a program link to the Institute for Engineering at Lyman High School* ONLINE CHOICE APPLICATION FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR The online choice application will open October 1, 2017 and close December 1, Applying online is easy to do and allows you to track the status of your child's application. You may apply at: PREPARATION FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM For the highly motivated, college bound students, the International Baccalaureate Program at Seminole High School and Winter Springs High School offers college-level coursework that provides a distinct competitive edge. To ensure success in this rigorous and demanding program, Seminole County Public Schools has implemented a comprehensive 6th-12th grade continuum where coursework is integrated and sequential so that students can leverage learning to their maximum advantage. SCPS Pre-IB Prep Program is a curriculum strand only offered at the four district wide magnet middle schools. This course of study prepares students for advanced placement classes, honors classes and the IB Program at Seminole High School or Winter Springs High School. Students should only apply for the SCPS Pre-IB Prep Program if they are interested in a challenging academic curriculum. 5 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS HOW TO SUBMIT A SCHOOL CHOICE APPLICATION? Applying online is easy to do and allows you to track your child s application and status. Prior to applying for a Choice program, we encourage you to attend the Open House for the magnet programs. HOW DO I KNOW IF MY APPLICATION HAS BEEN RECEIVED? You will receive a confirmation that your application has been received. WHAT IF MY CHILD WANTS TO ATTEND HIS/ HER ZONED MIDDLE SCHOOL OR HIGH SCHOOL? Students who choose to attend their zoned middle school do not need to complete an application. Students who choose to attend the traditional program at their zoned high school do not need to complete an application. All students, in-zone and out-of-zone who are interested in attending a high school magnet program are required to submit an application. HOW WILL I FIND OUT ABOUT TRANSPORTATION? If a student is selected for a school/program and lives more than two miles from the school you will be contacted by the Transportation Department with specific information shortly before the start of school. For out-of-zone transportation information see page 2. WHAT DO THE ABBREVIATIONS ESOL AND IEP MEAN ON THE APPLICATION? 6 REQUIREMENTS & COMMITMENTS MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL MAGNET SCHOOL/PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible for a school/program, students must reside in Seminole County. Applicants must successfully complete the 5th grade for middle school and the 8th grade for high school. Parents and students agree to the following conditions by signing the Middle and High School Magnet School/ Program Application. 1. HONOR CODE Students are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic integrity. Students shall refrain from all forms of academic dishonesty, such as cheating, plagiarism, or other deceitful means of obtaining grades. In addition to receiving disciplinary action, a student who is found guilty of academic dishonesty can be exited from the program. Inherent in the Honor Code is the responsibility of any and all members of a school/program who have knowledge that a student has violated the honor code to come forth and report any form of Honor Code violation. I will work to the best of my ability. PARENT/GUARDIAN STATEMENTS OF COMMITMENT I understand and commit my full support to my child's participation in the selected program. I understand that in order to remain in the program, my child must adhere to the specific requirements of the program. I acknowledge that no athletic coach representing the school to which my child is applying made contact with my child prior to our decision to apply. I agree to support his/her participation in this program. I will ensure that my child has uninterrupted study time daily. I further commit my support to the teachers and agree to participate in any parent/teacher conferences necessary to support my child's success. I agree that if selected, the student will remain in the program for a minimum of one year as long as all program requirements are fulfilled. In all years of participation in a magnet school/program, midyear exits are not permitted unless the school determines the student does not meet academic and/or program requirements. I understand that any out-of-zone student who exits a magnet program will return to his/her zoned school unless there is a Seminole County Public School Board approved transfer that allows the student to remain at the school where the magnet program is located. I understand that if a student declines the position once selected for the program, he/she will need to reapply to be reconsidered. OVIEDO HIGH SCHOOL Bioscience Technology The Bioscience Technology Program provides preparation for the career fields of applied biology in industry, medicine, and agriculture. This program includes industry certification. 8 TRANSFER OPTIONS SEMINOLE COUNTY EMPLOYEE STUDENT TRANSFER School choice option permitted under School Board Policy 5.30 which allows Seminole County Public Schools employees to bring their children to the site at which they work or to transfer their children to a specifically designated employee transfer school. If approved, the student is eligible to remain through the highest grade of the selected school contingent upon continued employment by the parent with Seminole County Public Schools. Transportation is not provided. If approved, the student is eligible to remain at the requested school through the highest grade. The transfer remains valid as long as the student remains a resident of the same school zone from which the transfer originated. Transportation is provided to a designated school. Other school choices are without transportation. An assignment through controlled open enrollment shall remain in effect until the highest grade available in that school. Students assigned through this process will not continue to the next school level (elementary school to middle school, middle school to high school) unless assigned to an available school at the next school level at the applicable time. Students assigned to a school through this process are not automatically entitled to enter school choice programs at the school unless they meet eligibility requirements and there is capacity at the school after the placement of any students in the wait pool for that particular school choice program.
