History of Wrestling Wrestling, the world s oldest and greatest sport, developed as a form of hand-to-hand combat and has been revered since ancient times as a test of strength, skill and courage. Organized wrestling events were held in the Nile Valley as far back as 3400 BC and the sport was valued so much that paintings of wrestlers and wrestling holds have been found on the walls of Egyptian tombs. Wrestling, in fact, is the only sport specifically mentioned in the Bible (Gen 32:23-33) where the most famous wrestling match between God and Jacob is described. Wrestling has been practiced by all peoples in all historic times, primarily for developing physical and psychological fitness. It was often used to prepare the male population for war and to develop their abilities to meet the vital requirements of daily living. Wrestling was an established sport among Native Americans and was also very popular in the English Colonies. By the 18 th Century, it was the major physical-contact sport among men of all classes. Some notable American wrestlers include Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt, actors Tom Cruise, Robin Williams and Kirk Douglas, General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, hero of Desert Storm, and a who s-who list of NFL stars including Archie Griffin, Bo Jackson, Larry Czonka and Ronnie Lott. There are currently five styles of amateur wrestling practiced in the United States: Folkstyle, Freestyle, Greco-Roman, Judo, and Sombo. Freestyle Wrestling concentrates on attacking the entire body of the opponent in order to take him down to the mat and expose his back. Greco-Roman, the oldest wrestling style, is similar to Freestyle, except the legs cannot be used or attacked. Judo, an oriental style of wrestling, and Sombo, which was developed in Russia, both concentrate on throwing your opponent off his feet and into a position of back control or submission. Freestyle, Greco-Roman, and Judo are recognized Olympic Sports. Folkstyle (scholastic wrestling) is the style common to high school and college competition in the United States. This style was developed in the U.S. and is not used in international competition. Folkstyle concentrates on control. The wrestler on top must constantly work towards a pin while the wrestler on bottom must continually try to escape or reverse. Folkstyle is similar to Freestyle in that for some of the time both wrestlers are on their feet attempting to take each other to the mat in order to gain control. Some final notes: professional wrestling, the type commonly seen on television, bears little resemblance to sport wrestling. While modern traditional wrestling is professional in some parts of the world, it is not as theatrical or glamorous as that seen on television. However, highlevel amateur wrestling has become one of the dominant disciplines in the professional sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) as displayed by UFC stars Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, Quentin Jackson, Matt Hughes, Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans, to name a few. In all traditional styles of wrestling, wrestlers compete in age and weight categories, so that each person has an equal chance of succeeding. According to insurance statistics, the sport of wrestling is safer than football and baseball, and has fewer serious injuries than basketball. Of the more than 80 sports tracked by the National Federation of High Schools, wrestling currently ranks as the sixth most popular for boys. 3 Covington Wrestling History The first Covington wrestling team was started in 1973 under the guidance of coaches Larry Tisdale, Dean Pond and Rex Thompson. Nineteen boys went out that year and the team finished with a record of 2 wins and 1 loss. The 1973 Covington H.S. Wrestling Team Row 1: R. Miller, G. Houk, R. Finfrock, R. Phillis, Coach Tisdale Row 2: R. Kimmel, M. Apwisch, D. Ely, T. Wise, D. Boyd, Coach Thompson Row3: D. Doseck, D. Coate, C. Smith, P. Finfrock, C. Zimmer, B. Lauber Row 4: M. Zimmer, T. Penny, S. Burelison, D. Baker. In 1978, under Coach Jack Schwamberger, Covington sent its first wrestler to the State Wrestling Tournament as Randy Kimmel defeated a Mechanicsburg wrestler to win the 155 lb. District Championship. Randy Kimmel, Covington s first State Qualifier In his first match at State, Kimmel lost a 6-2 decision to a wrestler from Fremont St. Joseph, but a tradition was started, and since 1978, there have been only three seasons where Covington has not qualified at least one wrestler to the State Tournament.

In 1983, under Coach Tom Barbee, Covington won its first District Team Championship as seven wrestlers placed 4 th or better at the tournament. Two of those wrestlers, Craig Vanderhorst and Jason Kingrey qualified for State and became the first Covington wrestlers to place at the State Tournament. Vanderhorst placed 3 rd at 138 lbs. while Kingrey placed 4 th at 167 lbs. Kingrey went on to become a three-time national qualifier at Heidelburg University where he set the school record for all-time wins. The Covington H.S. Wrestling Team - District Champions - Row 1: Mike Howell, Bryan Musgrave, Jim Shields, Chris Colbert, Rodney Kimmel, Kent Musgrave Row 2: Craig Vanderhorst, Kevin Wintrow?, Andy Kenworthy, Mike Hagan, Rob Vanderhorst, Mark Jacobs Row3: Daren Cecil, Bill Wise, Art Sowers, Glenn Hollopeter, Dave Daniels, Jason Kingrey, Coach Tom Barbee Craig Vanderhorst works for a pin Jason Kingrey is victorious The next year, in 1984, Covington had its most successful season with an undefeated dual record of and overall record of This year the Buccs won their first league championship, edging the favorite, Versailles, to win the Southwestern Rivers Conference Tournament. They also won another District Team Championship, although between 1984 and 1987, Districts was equivalent to today s Sectional Tournament while Regionals was equivalent to today s District tournament.

The Covington H.S. Wrestling Team - SRC Champions, District Champions - Row 1: Chris Colbert, Brent Young, Jim Shields, Lee Yantis, Bryan Musgrave Row 2: Rob Vanderhorst, Rich Phillis, Mike Howell, Mike Hagan, Mark Jacobs, Keith Ponchillia, Rodney Kimmel Row3: Coach Tom Barbee, Art Sowers, Brian Olson, Scott Taylor, Bill Wise, Jason Kingrey, Craig Vanderhorst, Randy Kooser, Coach Jack Schwamberger Craig Vanderhorst again placed third at State, this time at 145 lbs. His experience shows how luck and chance come into play at the State Tournament. He seemed to be in control of his first match, leading in the third period with around 15 seconds to go when his opponent from Thompson Ledgemont suddenly scored a reversal and back points to win the match. Vanderhorst won the remainder of his matches to place third while the Thompson Ledgemont wrestler advanced to the finals to be pinned by State Champion Erik Thomas of Gahanna Columbus Academy, a wrestler who Vanderhorst defeated 10-2 the week before in the Regional Finals. Covington had another outstanding season in 1986, winning both the District and Regional Championships and sending a record 11 wrestlers to the District tournament and a record 4 wrestlers (Keith Musgrave, Mike Hagan, Scott Taylor and Brian Olson) to the State Tournament. The Covington H.S. Wrestling Team - District Champions, Regional Champions - Row 1: Rob Anspach, Ernie Elliot, Cory Smith, Steve Hogue, Randy Sowers, L.G. 6 Lee Yantis, Chris Nutter From , the Buccs accomplished seven top-ten finishes at the District tournament, competing against an average of nearly 40 teams. Additionally, over the past twenty-eight years the Buccs have suffered just five losing seasons, while typically facing schools with much larger enrollments. Covington has been well represented at the State tournament over the past two decades, but until 2005, the Buccs were coming up short in returning a wrestler to the podium in Columbus. A number of wrestlers came close, including Scott Taylor (1987), Brian Olson (1987), Eric Vanderhorst (1992), Noah Turner (1997) and Mike Stephan (2002), but each were a point or two away. The near misses ended in 2005 as Logan Brown placed 3 rd at 189 lbs. Logan went 4-1 in Columbus with his only loss of the season coming in the semi-finals to two-time state champion Spencer Dye of Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic. In 2006, Logan returned to Columbus and this time finished atop the podium at 189 lbs. as Covington s first state champion. Brown finished the year with an undefeated 52-0 record and didn t give up a single offensive point at the state tournament, including his 9-2 victory over Jeremy Stevens of Ashland Crestview in the finals. Logan is continuing his wrestling career at Purdue University where he enters his redshirt senior season in 2010 as a 3x National Qualifier. Logan Brown sets up a pinning combination at State In 2008, Andrew DeHart quickly returned Covington to the state podium after putting together the best freshman campaign in school history. Andrew became the school s first freshman state qualifier and followed that up with a 6 th place finish at 130 lbs. DeHart followed that performance by becoming just the third two-time state placer with a fourth place finish at 145 pounds as a sophomore in He then became Covington's first three-time state placer in 2010 by taking runner-up honors at 145 pounds. Andrew DeHart locks in a cradle

During , the Buccs finished their most successful dual meet season in school history with the first undefeated, un-tied campaign battling to a perfect 29-0 dual meet record. Along the way, the team defeated a number of outstanding teams including sectional runner-up Oakwood, sectional champion and district runner-up Mechanicsburg, and a Dixie squad that finished third in the invitation-only state duals. The Buccs also defeated strong teams in Troy, Coldwater, Arcanum and Versailles. The Covington H.S. Wrestling Team - Undefeated 29-0 Dual Meet Record - Seniors Matt Breisch, Aaron Devenport, Dylan Gustin, Josh McMillion, Josh Shefbuch; Juniors Sam Angle, Lon Bitner, Andrew DeHart, Brandon Flora, Tyler Tebbe; Freshmen Cody Adams, Alex Bitner, Kyler Deeter, Bryton Lear, Justin Millhouse, Brian Olson, D.J. Seger, Brock Smith, Jake Sowers; Coaches Tom Barbee, Eric Vanderhorst, Todd Vanderhorst; Stats. Tara McNutt, Channing Murphy, Chelsea Wackler A number of developments over the past decade have been strengthening Covington s wrestling program. A new wrestling building was completed in 2000 and has not only provided a better, safer environment for the kids, but has also allowed them to spend more time learning the sport, whether it be after practice or during open mats in the off-season. In addition, the Covington youth wrestling program, started in 1997, is helping kids, between the ages of 5 and 12, gain valuable experience before entering jr. high and high school. This, along with hard work and dedication from the wrestlers, and support from the fans, will provide Covington wrestling with a promising future.

High School Preview Covington is coming off its most successful dual meet season in school history. The team finished with the first undefeated, un-tied campaign, battling to a perfect 29-0 dual meet record. In addition to their dual meet success, Covington also achieved outstanding tournament results winning the Northeastern and Troy Invitationals, finishing second at Ben Logan and finishing 17 th out of 47 teams at the GMVWA Holiday tournament despite being the smallest school in the competition. The Buccs lost five strong wrestlers to graduation Matt Breisch, Dylan Gustin, Josh McMillion, Aaron Devenport and Josh Shefbuch who combined for eight district tournament appearances and 432 individual wins over their careers. Despite this loss, the team returns some talented athletes, including a three-time state-placer, four district qualifiers and nine returning lettermen. The Buccs are led by seniors Sam Angle, Andrew DeHart, Brandon Flora, Zach Shilt, and Tyler Tebbe. DeHart became Covington s first three-time state placer with a runner-up finish at state last season. Both Angle and Flora are returning district qualifiers Angle qualifying the past two years. Tebbe is a three-year letterman and district alternate, while Shilt returns to the team after wrestling as a freshman. There are two new additions to the team in juniors Michael Deaton and Cody Minnich. The sophomore class includes Cody Adams, Alex Bitner, Cody Burton, Kyler Deeter, Bryton Lear, Gage Looker, Brian Olson, Brock Smith, Jake Sowers and Kody Von Aschen. Deeter is a returning district qualifier, while Olson and Smith are district alternates. Lear and Sowers are returning lettermen, while Burton, Looker and Von Aschen are new to the team. Rounding out the roster are freshmen Dalton Bordelon, Justin Daniel, Alex Fries, D.J. Jennings and A.J. Ouellette. The Buccs look forward to competing with the mix of Division 1, 2 and 3 teams that are on their schedule. Covington returns to the challenging GMVWA Holiday tournament and will compete in the Northeastern, Versailles, Troy and Ben Logan Invitationals. The Buccs will once again square off with some of the top dual-meet teams in the western part of the state, including Mechanicsburg, Brookville, Coldwater, Troy, Oakwood and Versailles. Additionally, the JV team will travel to some very competitive reserve meets including Greenville, Preble Shawnee, Versailles and Sidney. Covington has home meets with Miami East, Tipp City, Troy, Coldwater, Lehman and Versailles and will once again host the Covington Duals tournament which includes their Cross County Conference rivals, along with Lehman where they hope to defend the first-place finishes they claimed the past four years. This season, the Buccs will travel to Lehman high school for the Division 3 sectional tournament whose participants have proven to be the most successful among all divisions in Ohio at the state tournament over the past few years. Please come out and support the Buccs as we look forward to another successful season! For additional information, visit
