1 Bishop Montgomery High School Class of 2021 Freshman Registration We welcome our incoming Class of 2021 to register on Monday, March 20, Who: Class of 2021 Where: Bishop Montgomery High School Student Activity Center (located on 2 nd Level of Campus) When: Appointment times are alphabetical by student s last name. Registration Appointment Time 3:30pm 4:15pm 4:30pm Student Last Name Begins A - G H P Q - Z Please note it is important that a parent or guardian accompany the student at the scheduled appointment time. We request that all forms be completed and signed upon arrival so that registration may run in a smooth and timely fashion. Academic counselors and faculty will be available to answer questions regarding course selection. Please read through the following to familiarize yourself with the various stations so as to best complete the Course Request form. STATION 1: Registration Fee and Parent/Student Contract Registering for classes required the $550 registration fee be paid on Monday, March 20, Cash, personal check, or credit card are accepted. The enclosed Parent/Student Contract, Emergency Information, Emergency Release Form need be completed prior to Registration Day and submitted with the registration fee. STATION 2: Course Request Form You will receive a Course Request form for the school year. Your student s English, math, religion and history courses have been pre-assigned based on your student s junior high grades, teacher evaluations, and HSPT scores. Each section on this form has a corresponding station in the Student Activity Center. STATION 3 (OPTIONAL): Math / English Placement Appeal Please complete and submit the enclosed form(s) to appeal student s English and/or math placement. The fee for each appeal is $25 and must be submitted with the appropriate appeal form on Registration Day. STATION 4 (OPTIONAL): Honors World History & Cultures You will only need to stop at this station if you choose to enroll in Honors World History & Cultures. Students enrolled in Honors English 1 are invited to enroll in Honors World History & Cultures, if desired.

2 STATION 5: World Language: Bishop Montgomery s World Language options for freshmen are: French 1 Italian 1 Latin 1 Spanish 1 / Honors Spanish 1 Spanish 2 Students who wish to enroll in Honors Spanish 1 (speak Spanish as a home language) or Spanish 2 (have had previous instruction in Spanish) will be required to pass a written exam. Exams will be administered on Registration Day Monday, March 20 at 2:30pm, 3:15pm, and 4:00pm. If your student chooses to take the written exam, please allow time prior to your scheduled appointment time to take the exam. This will minimize scheduling conflicts later. STATIONS 6-9: Science / Fine Arts / Physical Education / Elective Options Freshmen may choose from one of four subject options for their sixth course: SCIENCE FINE ARTS P.E. / HEALTH ELECTIVES STATION 6 STATION 7 SCIENCE In order for a student to take a science course as a freshman, the following minimum conditions must be met: Biology - Student must be enrolled in Honors Algebra I, Geometry or Honors Geometry. Honors Biology - Student must be enrolled in Honors Algebra I, Geometry, or Honors Geometry and Honors English I. FINE ARTS Freshmen may take a year-long Fine Arts course to satisfy both their BMHS graduation requirement and the University of California / California State University college admissions entrance requirement. Fine Arts courses available during the freshman year which satisfy these requirements include: Art 1-2 Ceramics 1-2 Theater Arts 1-2 Mixed Chorus/Sight- Singing Music Production Video Production AP Music Theory Film Studies STATION 8 STATION 9 Before graduation, all students are required to complete a semester each of lower level PE and Health. For freshmen, one or both of these courses may be taken during any summer or during freshman year. Freshmen may select PE or Introduction to Dance. In the opposite semester, students may take Health or an elective. Students who complete both the PE. and Health requirements in summer may enroll in elective courses (one per semester) or a year-long Fine Arts or Science course. If the Health and / or Physical Education requirement(s) are met during BMHS Summer School, then the student has the option to take Geography and/or Speech & Debate as an elective course(s) during freshman year. STATION 10: Athletics The BMHS Athletic Director and varsity coaches will be at this station to answer any questions about Bishop athletic programs and summer athletic conditioning. See Station 11 (below) for more information about our summer conditioning offerings.

3 STATION 11 (OPTIONAL): Summer School / Sports Conditioning Summer School Many incoming freshmen opt to take one or two summer school classes which then provides more flexibility in their future schedules. Often these summer school courses include a 5 unit (semester) course such as Health or PE, or a 10 unit (year-long) course which may include a variety of math and Fine Arts classes. Students, who elect to take up to 10 units during summer school, may register for a summer school course(s) on Registration Day at this station. The cost is $300 per 5 unit course, and $600 per 10 unit course. Payment is due at the time of registration-- cash, personal check, or credit card accepted. Students may not miss more than 3 days for a 5/10 unit course. Please note that Bishop Montgomery also offers Introduction to High School English & Freshmen Orientation (a 5 week / 5 unit course) to help incoming freshmen complete the BMHS required summer reading, improve their study skills, and acclimate to Bishop Montgomery and our programs. Although this course does not satisfy any of the freshman year course requirements, it is an excellent opportunity for freshmen to sharpen their skills and assimilate into the high school culture. The course is open to all incoming freshmen and highly recommended for all freshmen enrolled in the English I-9 course in the fall. Sports Conditioning Sports conditioning programs are designed to give our coaches summer instructional time. Thorough conditioning better prepares the athlete for competition at the high school level and reduces the risk of injury. In addition, these programs are an excellent opportunity for students to make new friends, meet coaches, try a new sport, and engage themselves in a healthy, positive activity. All conditioning courses are scheduled after 12:45pm (when BMHS academic courses conclude). Students who plan to participate in a BMHS sport that offers a summer conditioning program are strongly encouraged to sign up for that sports summer program. Students who intend to play a fall sport must enroll in that sport s summer conditioning course. STATION 12: Academic Counselors Before proceeding to the Submit Course Request station (Station 13), one of our guidance counselors will review and approve each student s requested course schedule. The academic counselors are an excellent resource for questions about Bishop Montgomery and our academic programs. If you are unsure of any course options / decisions, please ask one of our guidance counselors for more information before proceeding to Station 13. STATION 13: Submit Course Request At this station, a Bishop Montgomery student and teacher supervisor will transfer the course request information to a Scantron form. These students are also available to answer questions about Bishop Montgomery and their school experience. Student and parents are welcome and encouraged to speak with these students. STATION 14 (OPTIONAL): Uniforms After completing the registration process, students and parents are welcome to peruse BMHS uniform options from Norman s Uniforms. Uniform purchases are welcome, but not required, at this time. Please note that students are expected to be in full uniform on the first day of classes.

4 March 2017 Dear Parents, Our uniform company, Norman s Uniforms, will be on campus on Registration Day. The early purchase of the essential uniform items allows for any necessary alterations and aids in planning for a sufficient number of uniform items for the start of school. We require students to be in full uniform on the first day of the new school year. We expect all of the uniform items to fit properly. Baggy, excessively long, loosefitting, excessively tight or short uniform items are not acceptable. Norman s Uniform Co. will be on campus on the following dates: Monday, March 20 3:30pm - 4:45pm (incoming freshmen only) Thursday, July 6 2:00pm - 6:00pm (all students, including incoming freshmen) A price list has been included in this Freshman Registration packet for your convenience. Uniform items required for the school year: Norman s Uniform polo or oxford shirt with BMHS logo. Norman s Uniform bottoms (pants, skirts, or shorts) with Norman s tag below the pocket. Norman s Uniform PE t-shirt and shorts with BMHS logo. Footwear: solid black, grey, or white socks, athletic type shoe or dress shoe with a closed heel and toe. No boots. Outer Wear: Norman s Uniform heavy winter jacket, wind-shirt, or polar fleece with BMHS embroidered logo. These are the only outerwear options accepted. Sweatshirts: BMHS sweatshirts, purchased through Norman s Uniform Co, are the only sweatshirts permitted. These sweatshirts do not shrink. 5 Is Spanish spoken at home? Has your student taken Spanish before? If you respond yes to either of these questions, please read below. When you come to our school for Freshman registration, your need to choose the language course you would like to enroll in. We offer: 4 years of French 4 years of Italian 4 years of Latin 4 years of Spanish The Spanish courses that you can take as a freshman are: Spanish I Spanish II Honors Spanish I Honors Spanish I is designed to accommodate students who are either Spanish speakers or have a strong background in Spanish at their high school entry level. These students would not benefit from a regular Spanish course. Honors Spanish I will improve and enhance the Spanish skills already possessed. In addition, the class will prepare students for entry into AP courses AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature. The curriculum is designed to motivate fluent speakers/students with experience in the language to fine-tune and to refine their skills in the language through an interactive approach. On Registration Day Monday, March 20 the Honors Spanish 1 placement test will be administered at 2:30pm, 3:15pm, and 4:00pm in the Student Activity Center. If you feel that your student is a candidate for this course, please plan accordingly to have him/her take the placement exam. This test is oral comprehension only and will take approximately 30 minutes.

6 PARENT SCHOOL INVOLVEMENT FEE (PSI) WHAT IS IT? Parent School Involvement (PSI) is an opportunity for parents to be involved with the Bishop Montgomery community and provides: A platform for social activities among parents. A key indicator of an effective school is a high level of parental support and involvement in curricular and extra-curricular activities. Parents with a feeling of ownership and investment in their child s education. This is our school, and we want it to be the best school possible. Necessary assistance needed by the school, teachers, coaches, staff and students that would otherwise be an expense to Bishop Montgomery. PSI requests all parents to commit to ten (10) hours of school involvement per semester. PSI credit is earned through any physical hours volunteered at Bishop Montgomery on projects benefiting: Student Activities Team Activities - what are team activities? Athletic? Campus Beautification Student Organizations Offices Main, Attendance, Development Classroom Campus Security & Traffic Control PSI hours may be given for refreshments only if these refreshments are needed by an organization or team, or if solicited by a school organization or team for a specific purpose. The maximum hours given for baked goods or refreshments is 2 hours (unless pre-approved in writing by a BMHS administrator). Parents are assessed a fee of $ per semester as built-in accountability. The fee is billed both in August and in January. Parents who meet their PSI commitment will be credited on the next month's tuition statement. Parents are billed in March per the Tuition & Fees page To ensure credit for service hours, please ask the coordinator of the event in which you are volunteering to sign the "PSI Check-Off Sheet." At the completion of your ten hours each semester, please return your completed "PSI Check-Off Sheet" to the BMHS Tuition Office. Various opportunities are posted in the weekly parent e-newsletter and in the monthly parent newsletter. Don t miss out on both volunteer hours and social opportunities. Credit for volunteer hours worked during the school year can only be applied toward that school year.
