2 Earning a Private School Education in a Public School Classroom Tuition at local schools is between $10,000 and $27,000 for Tuition for the IB Diploma Program is $0 IB Diploma Program is internationally recognized for its rigor and preparedness for college Earning the IB Diploma automatically qualifies your son/daughter for the highest level of Bright Futures FAS (Florida Academic Scholars) pays 100% tuition and $300 per semester at a Florida public college/university ( school year) 1290 SAT or 29 ACT earning the IB Diploma satisfies this requirement 100 hours of community service--cas satisfies this requirement) SRHS pays for all of the IB exams Diploma student total cost is $886

3 Earning the Diploma Students take 6 IB courses which include exams/ias/iocs/eas so it s not 1 test like in AP Biology HL is worth 7 points English HL is worth 7 points History HL is worth 7 points Mathematics SL or Math Studies SL is worth 7 points Spanish B SL, Spanish ab initio, or French ab initio is worth 7 points Anthropology SL, Visual Arts SL, or Chemistry SL is worth 7 points 42 points are available to students through their 6 courses. Students MUST earn 24 points to earn the diploma; Students MUST earn 12 or more points in the three HL courses (Bio, English, History). Three scores of 4 = 12; a score of 5, 4, 3 = 12; a score of 6, 4, and 2 = 12 but a student CANNOT have a 2 in any HL (Higher Level) course The EE (Extended Essay) and TOK (Theory of Knowledge) give students an opportunity to earn three BONUS points. Students actually have a possibility of earning up to 45 points (42 = 3 Bonus). 4 A Simplified Answer to How an IB Score of 1-7 is Achieved Unlike AP, IB scores are based on more than the exam at the end of the course. Typically, IB scores are based on 3 components: IAs/IOCs, EAs, end of course EXAM (Papers) IA Internal Assessment; IOC Individual Oral Commentary/Presentation Assessed by the classroom teacher; sent off to IB for moderation to ensure the teacher s assessment of the IA/IOC is consistent with IB rubric standards SRHS teachers are trained in the use of rubrics; many are IB examiners as well Students are given the rubric; students have great control over the outcome of the IA. Usually students get to choose the topic for the IA/IOC EA External Assessment not all courses have EAs Student work is sent to IB examiners around the nation and world for assessment; these assessments are also moderated by others to ensure the IB examiner is consistent with IB rubric standards. Except for the Visual Arts which has projects and a portfolio to determine a student s grade, IB courses have 2-3 Papers. This exam/paper is similar to a Final Exam; students are prepared, but like any exam, they do NOT choose what will be placed on the exam/paper Each paper is focused on a CORE component of the course. For example Paper 1 in History is based on Rights; Paper 2 is based on Protest Marks/Markbands IB uses a system called marks to determine a score for a student. Think of the marks as points, and the markbands as a range ( = A; = B, etc.)

History HL example There are 4 components in determining the score of 1-7 for History HL Paper 1 24 marks (20%) of total score Paper 2 30 marks (25%) of total score Paper 3 45 marks (35%) of total score All are EXTERNALLY Graded IA 25 marks (20%) of total score In this example, students can earn up to 124 marks The markband might be: 7 = marks earned 6 = marks earned 5 = marks earned 4 = marks earned 3 = marks earned 2 = marks earned 1 = 1-16 marks earned ***markband range is determined by worldwide student performance

7 CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) 150 hours (50 in each category) Counts as the volunteer requirement for Bright Futures Students are allowed to use 20 hours per year (40 hours total) for activities such as band, athletics, clubs Must complete a CAS Project Managebac is the website used to log their hours/activities I will begin meeting with students in September

10 Transcripts and College Applications IB Diploma Candidate on every college application and scholarship essay!! Also, working the EE into the college app can make a student stand out!!! Transcripts are sent electronically to colleges/universities around July 10 th I can write the letter of recommendation as the school counselor for applications IB scores are available to me July 5 th ; Students July 6 th Students have access to scores through codes I give them many call me on July 5 th!! If a student does NOT earn the diploma, I walk them through possible options. I will set up times for parent(s) and student to meet with me to review options
