1 1. SELECTION SYSTEM 2017 World Games ACROBATIC ATHLETE AND COACH SELECTION PROCEDURES WROCLAW, POLAND JULY th 1.1. Provide the minimum eligibility requirements for an athlete to be considered for nomination to the Team: Nationality/Passport requirements: Athlete must be a citizen of the United States at the time of selection. Athlete must hold a valid U.S. passport that will not expire for six months after the conclusion of World Games Minimum International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) standards for participation (if any): Athlete must be a minimum of fifteen (15) years of age by December 31, Hold a valid FIG Athlete License by February 1, Athlete must be a member in good standing of USA Gymnastics Tryout Events: Provide the event names, dates and locations of all trials, events and camps to be used as part of the selection process World Games Trials Series Competitions: Vegas Acro Cup (senior division), March 28 th - April 4 th, 2017, Las Vegas, NV USA Gymnastics Championships (senior division), June 25- July 2, 2017, Milwaukee, WI Provide event names, dates, locations and description of how athletes qualify for the trials, events and camps listed above in (if any). Vegas Acro Cup (senior division) - Any pair/group who meets the requirements to participate as a senior elite as defined in the Acrobatic Gymnastics Rules and Policies is eligible to compete. USA Gymnastics Championships (senior division) - Any pair/group who meets the requirements to participate as a senior elite as defined in the Acrobatic Gymnastics Rules and Policies is eligible to compete. 1

2 1.3. Provide a comprehensive, step-by-step description of the method that explains how athletes will go through the selection process to become Team nominees (include maximum Team size). Team Size: A maximum of 1 Women s Pair and 1 Mixed Pair will be selected for the 2017 World Games Team. A maximum of 1 Women s Pair and 1 Mixed Pair may be selected as non-travelling alternates for the 2017 World Games Team. A maximum of 1 Women s Group may be selected as non-travelling alternates, since the USA is first reserve in this category. Should a spot at World Games open to the USA, the alternate may be moved onto the 2017 World Games Team. Naming of the 2017 World Games team: Pair/groups will be named following the conclusion of the 2017 USA Gymnastics Championships. Athletes will be chosen from among 2017 World Games Trials Series competitors and petitioners. Method of Selection: The Athlete Selection Committee will use the discretionary criteria, listed in Section 2, to determine the 2017 World Games pair/groups and alternates from among the competitors and any approved petitions. 2. DISCRETIONARY SELECTION 2.1. Provide rationale for utilizing discretionary selection (if any): The sport of acrobatic gymnastics is a subjectively judged event and the events used during this selection process include both national and international competitions. In the selection of athletes who will compete together as a pair/group, it is difficult to make selection solely by the All-Around rank order and be competitive for medals. Selection of elements, overall performance, and competitive history, are criteria that are not directly reflected in the scores, but important criterion to take into consideration when determining the team List the discretionary criteria and explain how they will be used (if any): 1. Score and Ranking at the Vegas Acro Cup and USA Gymnastics Championships. 2. Score and Ranking at 2017 international competitions. 3. Scoring potential of combined routine that will be performed in finals. 2

3 4. Element selection, including types of elements, difficulty and execution of the elements performed. 5. Execution scores target execution score is Difficulty scores target difficulty scores are as follows: Women s Pair Mixed Pair Women s Group Balance v150 v210 v190 Dynamic v140 v180 v170 Combined v220 v270 v Artistry scores target artistry score is Competitive history including 2016 USA Gymnastics Championships, and 2016 international competitions. 9. Length and competitive history of a partnership, although new partnerships with outstanding performances will also be taken into consideration Provide the name of the committee that will be responsible for making discretionary selections, along with a complete list of the members titles currently serving on the committee: The Athlete Selection Committee will be responsible for making discretionary selections. The Athlete Selection Committee includes: Nicole Barrilleaux, Athlete Representative Ronda Francis, Elite Coach Lanie Davis, Elite Committee Representative Trisha Stewart LeVeque, Unaffiliated International Expert Ryan Ward, Program Director (non-voting) Specify the process that will be used to identify and handle any potential conflicts of interest involving a member of the committee. If a member of the Athlete Selection Committee has athletes in an event (WG, WP, MXP, MP, MG) up for consideration, that ASC member must be recused from all discussion regarding the event. In the event the recusal of an Athlete Selection Committee member would leave the Selection Committee with a tie vote, a revote will be taken and if necessary, the Program Director will cast the final vote. If a committee member is unable to fulfill the obligations of the Athlete Selection Committee or continue for any reason, a replacement will be named by the National Elite Committee. 3

PETITION PROCEDURES Notwithstanding the process identified in the preceding sections of these Selection Procedures, USA Gymnastics recognizes that extraordinary and unforeseen circumstances may occur which would cause an athlete otherwise deserving of a spot on the 2017 World Games team because of his/her previous competition results to be unable to participate in one or more steps in that process Petitions into the 2017 World Games team may be considered by the Selection Committee In order to be considered by the Athlete Selection Committee, petitions must be submitted in writing to the Acrobatic Program Director s office as soon as practical after the athlete becomes aware of his/her inability to participate in the process described above, but no later than the conclusion of the 2017 USA Gymnastics Championships The petition must state the specific injury, illness or unusual circumstance which prohibited the athlete from participating in the competitive process. In the case of a petition based upon injury or illness, the petition must be accompanied by a physician s statement. The nature and extent of that injury or illness is subject to verification by a doctor selected by USA Gymnastics Due to the interdependent nature of partnerships, a petition for an individual athlete will be understood to constitute a petition on behalf of the entire pair/group The Athlete Selection Committee will evaluate petitioned athletes pursuant to the discretionary criteria outlined in section II above. 4. REMOVAL OF ATHLETES 4.1. An athlete selected for the 2017 World Games team by USA Gymnastics may be removed as a nominee for any of the following reasons, as determined by USA Gymnastics. Due to the interdependent nature of partnerships, removal of any single athlete will cause removal of the entire pair/group Voluntary withdrawal. Athlete must submit a written letter to the President of USA Gymnastics Injury or illness which inhibits peak performance as certified by a physician (or medical staff) approved by USA Gymnastics. If an athlete refuses verification of his/her illness or injury by a physician (or medical staff) approved by USA Gymnastics, his/her injury will be assumed to be disabling and he/she may be removed Violation of USA Gymnastics Code of Ethical Conduct, National Team Agreement or Acrobatic Responsibilities Manual Removal may only occur by action of the President of USA Gymnastics after consultation with the Program Director and the athlete 4

5 representative and an interview with the coach or the athlete and his/her coach. Any decision to remove an athlete may be reviewed through USA Gymnastics Grievance Procedures. An athlete who may be removed from the Team pursuant to this provision has the right to a hearing per USA Gymnastics Bylaws (Article 10) An athlete may be removed from the team at any time for violation of WADA, FIG, and/or USADA anti-doping protocol, policies and procedures, as applicable. In such instances, the adjudication process will be managed through the United States Anti-Doping Agency. 5. REPLACEMENT OF ATHLETES 5.1. Describe the selection and approval process for determining replacement athlete(s) should a vacancy occur: 6. COACH SELECTION Note: Should a team member be removed or withdrawn, all members of the pair/group will be unable to compete. The Athlete Selection Committee may identify a non-traveling replacement pair/group in WP, MXP, and WG for the 2017 World Games Team, using the same criteria outlined in Section Describe the process by which the replacement pool or athletes will be identified: See Describe how the replacement athlete(s) will be selected, should a vacancy occur: See Identify the group or committee that will be responsible for making athlete replacement determinations: The Athlete Selection Committee will be responsible for making athlete replacement determinations Describe the process by which the 2017 World Games Team Coaches will be identified, including criteria used in the selection process: Coaches for the 2017 World Games team will be selected from among the personal coaches of the team members based on the following criteria: Proven team leadership ability International Experience 5

6 Personal Coach of an athlete named to the 2017 World Games team Professional member in good standing Attendance at required meetings Personal coaches of the athletes selected to the 2017 World Games team will be selected by the Athlete Selection Committee per the number of credentials available to the team and limited to one coach per pair/group. Coach selection is subject to approval of the President of USA Gymnastics Identify the group or committee that will be responsible for selection of the World Championships Team coaches: See Removal of Coach Voluntary withdrawal. Coach must submit a written letter to the President of USA Gymnastics. Violation of the USA Gymnastics Code of Ethical Conduct or Acrobatic Gymnastics Responsibility Manual. Any decision to remove a coach may be reviewed through USA Gymnastics Grievance Procedures per the USA Gymnastics Bylaws (Article 10). 7. SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS USA Gymnastics will retain the approved Selection Procedures and all supporting documents, including scouting or evaluation forms, etc., and data from the selection process for six months past the date of the conclusion of the 2017 World Games. 8. REQUIRED DOCUMENTS The following documents are required to be signed by an athlete as a condition of nomination to the 2017 World Games team and are available on line: USA Gymnastics Code of Ethical Conduct National Team Agreement Acrobatic Gymnastics Responsibilities Manual 9. PUBLICITY/DISTRIBUTION OF PROCEDURES The approved Selection Procedures (complete and unaltered) will be posted/published by USA Gymnastics in the following locations: 6

USA Gymnastics Web site: These procedures will be posted as soon as possible, but not more than five business days following notice of approval Other: Direct distribution to age-eligible national team members and their personal coaches. 10. DATE OF NOMINATION The 2017 World Games team will be announced on July 2, 2017 following the conclusion of the USA Gymnastics Championships competition. 11. MANDATORY TRAINING AND/OR COMPETITION Athletes selected to the 2017 World Games team are expected to maintain their training program between the conclusion of the selection events and the 2017 World Games. No team training camps are scheduled at the time of this documents publishing. 12. ANTI-DOPING REQUIREMENTS Athletes must adhere to all WADA, FIG, USADA and USOC anti-doping protocols, policies and procedures, as applicable. This includes participation in Out-of- Competition Testing as required by the WADA, FIG, USADA and USOC Rules, as applicable. 13. 8 These procedures are based on IOC and/or FIG rules and regulations as presently known and understood. Any change in the selection procedures caused by a change in IOC, and/or FIG rules and regulations will be distributed to the affected athletes immediately. The selection criteria are based on the latest information available to USA Gymnastics. However, the selections are always subject to unforeseen, intervening circumstances, and realistically may not have accounted for every possible contingency. If any force of nature, or force majeure, should cause the altercation or cancellation of any of the selection events listed in this document, these selection procedures will be revised, pursuant to their resubmission to the president of USA Gymnastics. 16.
