South Bend Community School Corporation Elementary and Middle Schools Success Starts Here! South Bend Schools offers comprehensive Elementary and Middle Schools as well as a diverse selection of magnet school options. These choices offer innovative options that respond to the unique interests and talents of our students
Elementary Schools Students are assigned to an elementary school based on home address. In December, the Board of School Trustees approved a new student assignment plan, Focus To determine your assigned elementary school, visit Focus2018 and look for the School Boundary Lookup on the left-hand side of the screen. 3 pplication and A Selection Process ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BOUNDARY MAP DARDEN ES TARKINGTON ES COQUILLARD ES WARREN ES MUESSEL ES MADISON ES MCKINLEY ES WILSON ES HARRISON ES NUNER ES LINCOLN ES MONROE ES HAY ES Applications to the magnet programs are available on January 8th at all schools, on our website ( and at the Administration Building. All applications are due by February 16th. All applications submitted by the deadline are used to create the applicant pool. All students applying to magnet schools (except Kennedy and LaSalle) are included in the applicant pool. Students applying to Kennedy Academy and LaSalle Academy will be scheduled for admission testing. The results of the testing along with other indicators will be used to create the eligible applicant pool for Kennedy and LaSalle. Students who live in the boundary areas for Madison, Nuner, Dickinson, Jackson or Jefferson do not need to apply. The goal of the selection process is that the composition of each school or magnet program will be reflective of the demographics and diversity within the overall student population in the South Bend Community School Corporation. The opportunity to provide a second choice option is given on the application. However, the second choice option may not be available if the program capacity has already been met. Students currently enrolled in the South Bend Community School Corporation have priority in the selection process over students not currently attending SBCSC. Parent notification letters will be sent for all schools by the end of March. Weight will be given to applicants with a sibling already enrolled in the magnet school. 2
Elementary Magnet Options Kindergarten through Grade 5 Kennedy Academy 609 North Olive Street Kennedy Academy is designed to offer academic challenges beyond those required by Indiana Academic Standards to highly capable kindergarten through 5 th grade students. The Academy provides a stimulating educational environment. Students participate in both guided and self-directed exploration across subject areas with emphasis in the sciences and mathematics. The Academy is available to all primary children who meet the criteria for admission. Enrollment will be controlled on a capacity and racial compliance basis. Kennedy is a full-district magnet. Hamilton Traditional School 1530 East Jackson Road South Bend, IN Swanson Traditional School Parker Dr. South Bend, IN Hamilton and Swanson Traditional Schools are designed to provide students the opportunity for academic, social and emotional growth in a highly structured, back-to-basics environment. The schools place a strong emphasis on high academic standards, student responsibility and active parental involvement. Enrollment is available to children whose parents agree to the admission criteria. Enrollment is controlled by district, capacity and racial compliance. The home schools for Hamilton Traditional School are Hay, Lincoln, Madison, Monroe, Nuner, Harrison and Wilson The home schools for Swanson Traditional School are Darden, McKinley, Muessel, Tarkington, Coquillard and Warren Nuner Fine Arts Academy 2716 Pleasant St. South Bend, IN The arts are a universal language. They shape how we feel, how we think, how we respond. At Nuner we believe music, drama, visual art, and dance are the most powerful tools to tap into what the children already know, amplifying their understanding of themselves and their world. An abundance of research exists which demonstrates how the arts have a positive impact on brain function and social skills. They improve listening and benefit language development. They foster an appreciation for diversity and activate the imagination. They use motor skills to assist the mind with discovering and obtaining knowledge, leading to stronger reading proficiency, increased math abilities, and higher general intelligence scores. Madison STEAM Academy 832 N. Lafayette Blvd. South Bend, IN Thinking creatively, solving realworld problems, and enjoying learning is a great recipe to ignite a child s passion for science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics. Madison students learn through a rich hands-on integrated curriculum, extensive field trip opportunities, 1:1 technology and a wide variety of after-school programs including Robotics, Coding, Legos, Lego Writing, Engineering is Elementary, PLTW (Project Lead the Way), Choir, Drums Alive, Gospel Choir, and Theater. Proximity to Leeper Park allows our students to explore and observe nature through an expansive school garden, outdoor amphitheater, and lavender labyrinth.
Free the child s potential and you will transform him into the world. Dr. Maria Montessori Other Magnet Options Marquette Montessori Academy Age 3 through 6th Grade 1818 Bergan St Marquette Montessori, an associate member of the American Montessori Society, offers a learning environment that is designed to provide for the developmental needs of children. Providing opportunities for students academic, social, and emotional growth, Marquette staff are highly trained to educate the whole child. Classrooms are multi-age and children remain in the same classroom for up to three years allowing parents and staff to collaborate with the child s best interest in mind. Early childhood classrooms serve children age 3-5 (including fullday kindergarten). Lower Elementary classrooms serve 1 st through 3 rd grade children. Newly included this year, Upper Elementary classrooms will serve 4th through 6th grade. Adhering to the Montessori method, children are first taught skills using concrete, hands-on manipulatives in all subjects. As developmentally appropriate, children progress to learning all concepts in an abstract manner. McKinley s Maritza Robles Dual Language Immersion Program Kindergarten & 1st Grade 228 N. Greenlawn Ave. South Bend, IN The Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program is one of many programs that the SBCSC has initiated to demonstrate its fundamental commitment to transforming education so that all children achieve their full potential. The DLI program is committed to providing children with a learner-centered experience, whereby children are able to deeply engage in bilingual instruction and bicultural experiences that will prepare them to become constructive members of their communities, productive participants in a global economy and engaged citizens of the United States and the world. The Spanish/ English DLI program offers native Spanish speakers and native English speakers an exciting and stimulating opportunity to maintain and develop their first language while acquiring native-like communication and literacy skills in a second language. SBCSC has chosen a 50:50 Spanish/ English model whereby 50% of classroom instruction is taught in Spanish and 50% in English. DLI teachers practice language separation to support language development goals Clay International Academy Kindergarten through 8th Grade Lily Rd. South Bend, IN Clay has begun the authorization process for the International Baccalaureate program for the Primary Years Program (PYP) and the Middle Years Program (MYP). The authorization process is a two year endeavor, and teachers will begin training during the summer of Once the authorization process has been completed, Clay will officially become an IB World School. International Baccalaureate programs are currently in over 109 countries around the world, and the South Bend Community School Corporation will offer a complete International Baccalaureate program for students through the IB programs at Clay International Academy and John Adams High School. The Primary Years Program is a transformative learning experience for students, teachers, and whole school communities. PYP students learn how to take control of their learning while teachers collaborate to deepen student understanding and increase student confidence and self-motivation. The whole school community, including parents, are viewed as partners in learning, and actively contribute to a holistic educational experience. The Middle Years Program framework encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. Using global contexts, MYP students develop an understanding of their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet through developmentally appropriate explorations of: Identities and relationships Personal and cultural identity Orientations in space and time Scientific and technical innovation Fairness and development Globalization and sustainability 4
Middle School Options 6th through 8th Grade Students are assigned to a middle school based on home address. In December, the Board of School Trustees approved a new student assignment plan, Focus To determine your assigned middle school, visit Focus2018 and look for the School Boundary Lookup on the left-hand side of the screen. Jefferson Traditional School 528 South Eddy Street South Bend, IN Jefferson Intermediate Traditional School is designed to provide students the opportunity for academic, social, and emotional growth in a highly structured, back-to-basics environment. The school places a strong emphasis on studentcentered classrooms with a focus on differentiated instruction, increased parental involvement, and high academic and behavioral expectations. Dickinson Fine Arts Academy 4404 Elwood Avenue Dickinson Fine Arts Academy offers students experiences in the Fine Arts and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) curriculum. 6 th through 8 th grade students are able to attend classes in either gender-based or co-ed classrooms. STEAM topics are integrated in all subject areas through project-based learning. Expanded instruction in the arts is offered during the school day as well as after school through the After-School Arts Adventure program. LaSalle Academy 2701 West Elwood Avenue LaSalle Academy is designed to offer academic challenges beyond those required by Indiana Academic Standards to highly capable 6th through 8th grade students. The Academy provides a rigorous, comprehensive academic program in all subject areas distinguished by the application of technology and the infusion of math and science throughout the curriculum. Students participate in both guided and selfdirected exploration across subject areas. The Academy is available to all intermediate children who meet the criteria for admission. Enrollment will be controlled on a capacity and racial compliance basis. Jackson s Project Lead the Way 5001 S. Miami Rd. South Bend, IN Project Lead the Way students engage in hands-on activities, projects and problems that are reflective of real-world challenges. This compelling, real-world approach empowers students to learn essential in-demand skills validated by the world s leading companies, while also providing an invaluable connection between what students are learning in the classroom and how it applies to their future paths. Edison Middle School 2701 Eisenhower Dr. South Bend, IN Edison strives to be a student-centered school that meets the needs of diverse population by offering a varied instruction plan. In 2004, Edison student David Tidmarsh won the 77th National Spelling Bee. Navarre Middle School 4702 W. Ford St. South Bend, IN Navarre Middle School empowers students to engage and impact their community through high quality instruction. At Navarre, we stress the extremely important concepts of pride, personal bests, respect, integrity, determination and empathy. 5
MIDDLE SCHOOL BOUNDARY MAP Transportation Free bus transportation is a privilege extended to students who live outside of the self-transport areas for each school. School board policy states that transportation is not provided for those areas within a one-half mile radius of an elementary school The best way to predict your future is to create it Abraham Lincoln (including kindergarten), a onemile radius of a middle school, and a 1.5-mile radius of a high school. Transportation is available to all magnet schools unless a student lives in the self-transport area. BellTimes Beginning with the school year, there will be new start and end times for schools: Elementary Schools (K-5) 8:00 to 3:00 Middle Schools (6-8) 9:00 to 4:00 High Schools (9-12) 8:30 to 3:30 Rise Up Academy 9:15 to 4:15 6
