The letter should be typed and be a minimum of one page in length. 1. What are your academic goals at this high school and at the university level? 2. Why do you wish to participate in the TCHS IB Diploma Program? 3. How would this program assist you in meeting the goals you just discussed? 4. How are you prepared to meet the rigor, demands and responsibilities of the IB Diploma Program? 5. When this program becomes the most difficult thing you have ever done, you are completely overwhelmed and you want to withdraw from the program because you see your friends with more free time, an easier school schedule. What are you willing to do to persevere and finish the program? How will you accomplish this goal?

Part IV: Program Expectations: The general philosophy at TCHS is to make the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program available to all students who want to challenge themselves as students and to prepare themselves for college. Although there are no official entrance exams for the IB program, there are some strongly recommended entering conditions that students and parents should be aware of: 1. Self-motivation: the student must understand that entering into and completing the IB program, whether as a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior, requires his or her willingness to meet the rigorous challenge of these courses. 2. Time-management: the student and parents should consider the time commitment required to successfully complete all coursework and activities associated with the program and carefully decide which activities, both academic and extracurricular, the student can realistically accomplish throughout their four years of high school. 3. Reading / Writing level: the student should be able to read and write at or above grade level. 4. Grades / Test Scores: a 3.0 GPA or above is recommended, but the student should be performing at no less than a B in the course prior to entering the IB coursework. Students should be at least Proficient on their California Standards Tests (CST). Proficient is considered at grade level. Advanced is considered above grade level. These are the guidelines that TCHS would request each student and parent to consider when making the commitment to enter the IB Diploma Program. Student applications will be screened by the IB Advisory Committee. Students must meet the prerequisites for each IB course. Pre-requisites are published in the TCHS course catalog. Part V: IB PROGRAM HONOR CODE and the IB GENERAL REGULATIONS: DIPLOMA PROGRAM Honesty is the best policy. Nowhere is this more true than for TCHS students in the International Baccalaureate program who strive to be principled inquirers who abide by the Titan honor code. The IB Diploma Program is a rigorous course of study that seeks to prepare students to take on the demands of further academic study and ultimately become contributing citizens of the world. As such, the IB Diploma Program is one of the best-known, most well respected college-prep programs in the world. Therefore, it is imperative that TCHS students adhere to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Honor Code as set forth below. TCHS International Baccalaureate students agree to maintain academic honesty and uphold the highest standard of academic and behavioral integrity. It is understood that participating in

3 any of the following activities constitutes Malpractice and is considered a serious breach of IB Regulations. Malpractice includes: 1. PLAGIARISM: the copying or representation of another s work as one s own. (This includes data downloaded from the Internet). 2. COLLUSION: allowing another student to copy your work or submit it as his or her own. 3. DUPLICATION OF WORK: the presentation of the same work for different assessments, or projects. 4. ANY BEHAVIOR THAT GAINS UNFAIR ADVANTAGE FOR A STUDENT OR THAT AFFECTS THE RESULTS OF ANOTHER STUDENT: this would include but not be limited to using unauthorized aides during an exam, looking at someone else s paper during a test, letting another student look at your paper during an exam, utilizing unauthorized notes during an exam, or disrupting an exam by an act of misconduct, including cell phone disruptions. Participation in any of the above behaviors or actions deemed to be similar is considered a violation of the IB Honor Code. Any violation will result in one or more of the following: 1st offense: Failing grade on assignment/test. Discipline referral will be made and entry made in student s discipline file. Conference will be held with the parent, student, teacher, IB Coordinator/Counselor, and TCHS administrator. Final grade in class may be negatively affected. 2nd offense: Failing grade on assignment/test. Discipline referral and suspension from school will occur and 2nd entry will be made in discipline file. Conference will be held with the parent, student, teacher, IB Coordinator/Counselor, and TCHS administrator. Student will be dropped from class and receive F on transcript. Recommendation for dismissal from the IB Program will be made. I have read and understood the most recent copy of the IB World Schools General Regulations (and any amendments). 4 Student Signature: Part VI: Further Instructions for Applicants Acceptance into the program is not only dependent on the CST scores, but also the quality of the personal statement and the suitability of the IB Program for the student s academic/career path. I plan to take all the prerequisite and required courses, test in all six IB subject groups, and fulfill all other IB requirements TOK, Extended Essay and CAS. I understand that I will be enrolled in pre-requisite courses for the IB program in 9th and 10th grades. All students planning to enter the IB Diploma Program will successfully complete Advanced English 9 & 10, AP Art History, AP World History and Spanish 1 & 2 before entering 11th grade. I understand there will be a fee for the exams and registration. As a consequence of the rigor and demands of the IB Diploma there will be limited opportunities for elective courses (see anticipated IB four year course schedule). If at any time the student wishes to drop from the IB program the student and parent will be required to fill out a withdraw form and to participate in an exit interview with the IB Coordinator and Counselor.
