Special Election 2/13/18 Two levy measures requiring voter approval will be on the February 13 special election ballot. If these levies are approved, local school tax rates will decrease. Please visit the Kent School District Website for more information. If you have questions or need additional information regarding the special election, please call The Right Levies at the Right Time State funding formulas have not been settled in Olympia. A two-year levy for Proposition 1 will maintain the level of educational excellence that our students, families and community expect. Proposition 2 will fund both technology and critical repair projects not funded by the 2016 bond to ensure safe and healthy classrooms. With voter approval, these levies give our students an opportunity to achieve their potential by receiving an excellent education with access to technology in a well-maintained school. Why do we need levies? The state education funding plan is a step in the right direction, but the state is not yet fully funding all education costs. We still need a local levy. The Kent School District receives about 68 percent of its funding from the state and a little more than 11 percent from federal and other sources. We rely on local levies approved by taxpayers to provide the remaining funds, approximately 20 percent of the District s overall budget. Kentlake Named School of Distinction Kentlake High School has been recognized by the state of Washington as a SCHOOL OF DISTINCTION! This means that our school is one of the top 5% highest improving schools in Washington State. And, we are the ONLY high school in Kent to receive this award! In fact, only 27 schools in 13 school districts achieved this standard! Progress of this nature only happens with teamwork and intentionality. It happens when teachers, paras, and staff come together and collaborate on what is truly best for students. Let s keep up the good work

3 Birch Creek Conferences 12/6 A special thank you goes out to those who attended the Birch Creek Conferences on December 6th. Reaching out to students and families by going to their homes sets a clear tone that our kids matter to us! Invest Ed. Auction 12/7 This year s Invest Ed Silent Auction raised over $1,400 for Kentlake students in need. Last year we were able to help about 100 students with fees, supplies, and other school expenses. If you know of students that could benefit from this financial assistance, please refer them to their counselor. Thank you to all who participated and make this auction a success! KL Movie Night 12/8 Our second free Movie Night of the year was held on December 8th. The student body voted on the holiday classic Elf to be shown. Almost 300 kids attended the event where prizes for best dressed were awarded, along with other competitions. We raised over $200 in concessions, which will be donated for Grad Night. Thank you to everyone who was involved in this event! We look forward to the next movie night at Kentlake, details coming soon!

4 Culinary Arts Gingerbread Houses 12/14 Kentlake Annual Giving Tree This holiday season, Kentlake Falcons collected over 130 gifts for the families in our community. A huge thank you goes out to all who participated. The Careers in Culinary Arts class at Kentlake held their annual gingerbread house decorating competition on December 14th. Teams of students chose a theme and decorated a house and surrounding landscape using edible items. The project took many in-class and out-of-class hours to complete. The houses were displayed in the commons, and all Kentlake staff and students were encouraged to vote for their favorite. The winner of this year s competition was Christmas on Conch Street. Great job students! Latinos Unidos & Japan Club Holiday Party On Thursday, December 14th, members of Japan Club and Latinos Unidos held a joint holiday party in Room The clubs came together to learn about each other s cultures, watch a movie, and enjoy delicious food. A great time was had by all! Kent-Meridian IB Programme Kent-Meridian High School is a magnet for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme, a well known, rigorous, globally-oriented curriculum that is a magnet program for the Kent School District. We are interested in letting all current KSD sophomores know that there will be an IB Parent/Student Night at KM on Thursday, January 18th at 6:30 pm.

5 Culture Night 1/11 We held Culture Night in January 11th, in correlation of the M.L.K. Jr. Holiday. There were performances by KL clubs: KPop, Latinos Unidos, Pacific Islander, Break Dancers, and our very own KL Orchestra! There were a variety of booths, lots of amazing food, awesome games, and fun spontaneous dancing. It was an informational, entertaining, and enjoyable community event that we look forward to hosting again in the future. Thank you to all who participated! KL Student Store. Now in Business! Marketing Operations (the Student Store) is a marketing class where students get hands-on experience how to open and run a retail store. The students select the products that are sold, promote them and work in all parts of the store, including: cashiering, making drinks. (smoothies, iced coffee, italian sodas), food preparation, and serving. Through out students experience in the store, many have the skills to be hired in jobs that require customer service and cashiering experience. The most popular items that are sold in the Student Store include energy drinks (Monster and Red Bull), smoothies, iced coffee, Pizza Pockets, quesadillas, and cookies. Panini Sandwiches are back at the Student Store! Choose between roast beef and ham, then select either cheddar or pepper jack cheese. The Student Store can also make a grilled cheese panini sandwich. Remember, the Student Store closes 10 minutes before the end of 3rd lunch, and only accepts cash. Thank you everyone for continuing to support your Student Store!

6 KL Learning Lab The Learning Lab is now up and running! It is open every day during 3rd, 5th, and 6th period. The Learning Lab is a place where students can work on assignments, take tests, receiving tutoring, or just have a quiet place to work. All students are welcome, as long as they have a pass from their teacher.
