5 FFA Scott Robison During Ramp-Up 6th, 7th, 8th Fall Sports Season, Winter Sports Season, Spring Sports Season The FFA probably isn't what you think it is. FFA at RMS is for students in the Exploring Biotechnology course and helps them develop their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success. For many years the letters FFA stood for "Future Farmers of America" but in 1988 that changed. Today the National FFA Organization, while recognizing the heritage of its "Future Farmers", proudly develops future leaders in all aspects of agriculture, science, technology, education, and hundreds of other fields. Former FFA members hold leadership positions in virtually every Fortune 100 company and have led cities, towns, and states across the county. One former member actually became President of the United States! Membership in FFA is open to any RMS student who has an interest in plants, animals, natural resources, and biotechnology. Students who are not enrolled in Ag Science or Biotechnology will be required to complete an independent project related to agriculture or biotechnology. The FFA is a national organization and there are $20 annual dues to join, financial assistance is available to those students with a demonstrated need. Members will receive an RMS FFA t-shirt upon paying dues. Heart and Sole Amy Walter After School 6th, 7th, & 8th Fall Sports Season, Spring Sports Season Heart & Sole creates a positive, structured space for middle school girls to learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy, strengthen connections and develop life skills that will help them as they move through adolescence and beyond. The Heart & Sole curriculum is rich with themes girls can relate to, addressing the whole girl body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection and building important life skills such as team building, developing a support system, boundary setting, decision making, asking for and providing help and more. This 10-week program is accessible to all girls regardless of athletic ability or fitness level and considers the range of ages and varied experiences of middle schoolers. Physical activity includes strength and conditioning appropriate for this age group. The season culminates with the Girls on the Run 5k, which is the celebratory event that underscores the confidence, competence, connection, character and caring they ve been developing in the program and gives them a tangible sense of goal setting and achievement. RMS hosts a Heart and Sole site. Registration and payment through Girls on the Run of the Triangle required. Scholarships are available. Heart and Sole meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:30-5:00 for 10 set weeks as defined by Girls on the Run of the Triangle. 5
6 Jump "Write" In!: Creative Writing Club Kelly Evans During Ramp-Up 6th, 7th, 8th Fall Sports Season, Winter Sports Season, Spring Sports Season Strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. This club will encourage mature young writers to explore the creative writing process. Our activities will be fun, clever, challenging, and relevant to students. Our work will be based on the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen when we can get excited about writing. Fun and engagement will be at the core, but students will also learn a great deal about hard work and the craft of writing. Students should prepare for unconventionally brilliant results when they express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in their own voices. Students who are interested should produce a written response or letter of interest (at least 250 words) that clearly expresses why they should be considered for this club. Application will also be required. Lego Club Michelle Von Hoene During Ramp-Up in th & 7th Winter Sports Season & Spring Sports Season Are you ready to build on your strengths? Join the LEGO Club and practice your building through specific challenges and creative building sessions. Students who want to be in the Lego Club need to demonstrate a willingness to work well with others, the ability to collaborate, and a kind and encouraging attitude. No previous building experience is required. Come learn engineering skills and enhance your creativity! Open to 6th and 7th grade students. Making Music with Apps Carlton Ballard Ramp Up (Track 1 Schedule) 7th & 8th Winter Sports Season, Spring Sports Season This club is looking for students that have an interest in music. While it would help if you knew how to play an instrument or read music, it is not required to be a member of this club. However, you must have an appreciation for music and have a desire to make your own beats by using music apps in the App Store. Our primary goal will be to learn how to use Garage Band on the ipad and possibly move to other apps. We will also discuss how to DJ and produce your own music. The club is open to all 7th and 8th grade students. Students who show interest will be asked to complete a simple application. The application will include a short essay on Why Music is Important to them. The application will also require a teacher signature to confirm the student follows RAMS expectations. You must have a positive attitude and be willing to work as a team. You will learn how to write your own music. You will learn how to give and receive constructive criticism. You will improve your verbal and non verbal communication skills as you prepare to perform in front of friends and family. 7
8 MathCounts Amanda Pierce During Ramp-Up 6th, 7th, & 8th Fall Sports Season, Winter Sports Season MathCounts provides an opportunity to students who are especially interested in Math to tryout to participate in a countywide MathCounts competition. Throughout the school year, we will work on math problems at upper middle school and high schools levels, discuss possible solutions, and work to increase our Math fluency needed for each phase of the competition. In the spring, we will compete in hopes of making it to the statewide competition. Any student can be a member if they show higher knowledge of mathematics, based on assessment tools given by the MathCounts organization. As the competition gets closer, a "test" (also given by MathCounts) will be given to determine the students (minimum of 4, maximum of 10) who will travel to the competition. Mock Trial Amy Houser & Maria Evans During Ramp-Up, After School 6th, 7th, & 8th Fall Sports Season, Winter Sports Season The Justice Iredell Middle School Mock Trial Tournament is an educational team program where middle school students have the opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of civil/criminal law and courtroom procedures. 10 Science Olympiad Karin Kuropas & Paul Cancellieri Wednesdays in Ramp Up, Tuesdays after school 6th, 7th, & 8th Fall Sports Season, Winter Sports Season Science Olympiad is an international competition that invites students to show off their knowledge of science through a series of over two dozen events. Some events involve taking tests to demonstrate knowledge of science topics, like diseases or invasive plants. Other events require students to build wooden towers, soda bottle rockets, or other items and compete against other teams. Coaches help students to stay focused on preparing for the events, but significant time is needed both at school and outside of school to be on the competitive SO team. Club (Wednesdays during Ramp Up) is open to all. Competitive Team (meets both times) is by application that includes student essay and teacher recommendation. Spanish Club Kelly Eichenlaub During Ramp-Up 6th, 7th, & 8th Fall Sports Season, Winter Sports Season, Spring Sports Season Exploring deeper into the Spanish language and culture with different service -learning projects, research projects, food, music/dance, crafts, skyping natives, etc. Can join if passionate and motivated about learning more Spanish. If a student has any behavioral issues in the general classroom, they cannot be a part of the club until the issue is resolved. Also, if any student of mine has missing work in the general classroom, I would like them to focus on getting that done first before completing extra activities during club. 10
11 Student Council Jana Burkhardt During Ramp-Up 6th, 7th, & 8th Fall Sports Season, Winter Sports Season, Spring Sports Season Student Council Homeroom Representatives will be the communication the students have to the school leadership. Homeroom Representatives will discuss with their peers things that are going on in the school: positives and negatives. They will then report back at meetings and the Council will decide how to proceed. Members may meet with Mr. Sherman or members of the leadership team to share their concerns. Student Council members will then be able to share accurate information back with their "constituents." Students will have three requirements throughout the year: school community service, city of Rolesville community service, and planning a social event. All of the decisions will be student driven. Homeroom representatives will be elected by their homeroom. Students will be required to maintain good academic and behavioral standing. This means that students cannot have a major write up or a failing grade point average.
