3 Staples Fun Facts In 1866 Staples 1 st graduating class consisted of 6 female students. Wilbur Cross was Staples 2 nd principal (age 22). At 70 he was the governor of Connecticut. Staples HS was originally located on the site of what is now Saugatuck Elementary. Today Incoming freshman class: 469 Staples population for : 1852 Over 100 clubs and activities 36 sports and 63 sports teams Staples cafeteria goes through 640 pounds of Boar s Head turkey each month 1440 bagels/muffins each week 60 dozen eggs each week 150 buffalo chicken wraps each day

5 8 th - 9 th Grade Transition January: SHS counselors, assistant principal and upperclassmen meet with 8 th graders in groups June: SHS counselors review 9 th grade schedules with each student individually August: personalized tours offered to families and BBQ or other social event will occur right before school starts September: SHS counselors meet with all 9 th graders in small groups
6 Curriculum Open House February 9, 2017, from 7-9 pm at SHS Information about SHS classes is provided For parents and students Department Chairs and teachers are available to answer questions Course levels will be reviewed Snow Date Feb. 15th
7 Course Level Distinctions In general, course levels differ in terms of content, rigor, workload, pace and assessment Honors Level accelerated class, increased depth of abstract, critical and original thinking, more independent work. Designed to serve students whose ability and effort require additional challenge A Level advanced college preparatory. Challenges student s ability to exert purposeful effort in order to develop as a critical thinker B Level college preparatory course that provides support to students to assist them in developing as learners C Level scaffolded to provide structure and support to students who need more assistance
8 Which level class is right for your child? Is your child achieving high grades on tests as well as homework and/or extra projects? How much time does your child currently spend on homework? Is your child overly stressed about grades? How busy is his/her life outside of school? How independent and responsible is your child? Does your child do his/her homework consistently? Does your child possess good time management skills? To what extent does your child seek out and embrace academic challenges without feeling overwhelmed? Keep in mind that teachers make carefully considered course recommendations for your child.
9 Course Selection Middle school counselor will provide details of the course selection process 8 th grade teachers know your child well and make appropriate course recommendations If you have questions regarding your child s course recommendations please call the classroom teacher
10 Overrides Form is available on the middle school website Override must be completed and returned to the 8 th grade counselor Deadline is March 31 st No overrides will be accepted after the March 31 st deadline date
11 If a student overrides a course recommendation and the course is too difficult he/she may be unable to change levels during the school year (for example, course may be closed or schedule may be significantly impacted) Students may not earn a grade which they consider satisfactory despite their best efforts If a level change is possible to be made, the grade from the original class will transfer to the new class
12 Course Registration Requirements 9 th graders must take 7 classes each semester 10 th, 11 th and 12 th graders must take a minimum of 6 classes each semester

24 Fall Schedule Adjustments Within the first 4 days of school, one lunch period will be designated for freshmen to make schedule adjustments if needed Specific reasons required to make schedule changes will be detailed in summer mailing Override forms are not accepted Teacher changes are not permitted
25 Graduation Requirements SHS Class of 2021 English Social Studies 4.0 (1.0 credit each year) 3.5 (1.0 Global Themes, 1.0 U.S. Hist,.5 Am. Gov.5 Area Studies,.5 additional elective) Mathematics 3.0 Science 2.0 World Language 2.0 (any one language in sequence) Phys. 27 Attendance & Homework Attendance and homework completion are the keys to learning and school success Poor classroom attendance could mean a loss of credit Expect more homework in high school than middle school On the first day of school your child will receive a Student Handbook/Daily Planner
28 What if my child is having difficulty in a class? Stay calm and discuss issues with your child Student can make an appt. with the teacher for extra help Student can visit the Learning Centers Parent can review Schoology and HAC (Home Access Center) with student to view assignments, grades, etc. Parent can contact the teacher Student can make an appt. to see counselor
29 What are Learning Centers? Available for all 5 academic subjects Staffed by Staples teachers Strictly voluntary for students Open during school hours only Students can access the Learning Centers during a free period
