4 SPRINGFIELD HIGH SCHOOL SPIRIT ~ HONOR ~ SUCCESS 2016 ~ 2017 COURSE CATALOG Welcome to planning your education for the 2016~2017 school year at Springfield High School: The world has changed rapidly in recent years. Existing post-high school opportunities are becoming more complex. The global marketplace demands higher skills and levels of education. Students at Springfield High School must graduate with key cognitive strategies, content knowledge, academic behaviors and contextual skills and awareness. It is our goal at Springfield High School to promote the Springfield School District s vision of Every Student a Graduate Prepared for a Bright and Successful Future by successfully preparing students for college, career, and life opportunities by offering comprehensive programs, rigorous curricula, and unwavering support. Springfield High School programs offer a challenging course of study designed for students to prepare and ultimately reach their academic and career goals. Through a coordinated plan of courses, all SHS students will be better prepared for post-high school experiences to continue their learning and education. As lifelong learners, SHS students may continue their education at 4-year colleges and universities, community colleges, technical institutions, apprenticeship programs or the military as they pursue their post-high school goals. FORECASTING GUIDELINES Student forecasting allows students to develop a sequence of required and elective courses that best meet their post-high school plans and goals. It also provides valuable information to administrators and teachers on what courses to offer each year. Students will be scheduling once a year in the spring. They select academic and elective courses that interest them and relate to their long-term educational and post-high school goals. Current 9 th 11 th grade students will determine course selections in April. Current 8 th graders will meet with high school counselors and administrators to forecast beginning in April. In order to answer questions about courses, clubs, activities and athletics, an Open House for 8 th grade students and their parents is scheduled for March 29, Students should select appropriate alternative classes on their forecast form in case a preferred class is not offered due to insufficient enrollment, or the class is full due to excess requests. Parents and students should carefully review the course catalog. Together they should read the descriptions, pre-requisites and grade level requirements. They can select the courses they feel best meet the student s needs both short term and long term. Carefully following the directions on the forecast sheet will make it easier for staff to schedule the student into appropriate requirements and preferred electives. Students can direct questions to their counselor or one of their teachers at any time. 1
5 SPRINGFIELD HIGH SCHOOL GRADING POLICY Grades are a measure of student accomplishment. Students are evaluated fairly and consistently by the teacher based on the achievement of specific course objectives. A copy of the course objectives, grading requirements and expected student outcomes is shared with students at the beginning of each course. Parents are encouraged to review the course objectives, grading requirements and expected outcomes with their student and the teacher. At Springfield High School academic/class grades are defined as follows: A Indicates excellent or outstanding performance. Student demonstrates a full grasp of the subject matter. All the Course objectives are mastered. B Student met all the objectives of the course and shows an above average grasp of the subject matter C Student met the requirements and objectives of the course satisfactorily, and has a grasp of the subject matter at an average level of competency. D Student met a minimum number of course objects to satisfy the requirements of the course, but has a below average grasp of the subject matter. F Student failed to meet a minimum number of course objectives. I Student s work is incomplete or insufficient to justify a passing grade. To earn credit the student must complete the work to a passing level before the end of the following semester. Failure to make up absences or failure work at a passing level will result in a NP (No Pass) and no credit. -or- Student has exceeded the total number of allowable absences and has failed to make up or recover class/work time. NP Student has not met a sufficient number of course objectives to pass at a minimum level and thus receives no credit. The student should either repeat the course or be counseled into another program or course. P The student satisfactorily met the course objectives in a Pass/No Pass course. Teacher assistants and after school or summer make-up classes are graded on the P/NP system. Student receives credit if they pass, but no grade is computed in their GPA. GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA): The cumulative GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA) is computed at the end of each semester, beginning in the 9 th grade. It is based on the semester grades of all earned credit course work compared to all classes taken. The total number of grade points earned is divided by the number of credits taken. Each course grade is based on a numerical system where: A = 4 B = 3 C = 2 D = 1 F = 0 Final Examinations: Final examinations are comprehensive tests given at the end of the semester. Teachers may or may not require a final semester examination depending on course requirements; some require a final project. If a teacher does require a final semester examination, it is included in the course outline. Final examination schedules are used at the end of each semester, in order to allow students an appropriate time frame to complete final exam requirements. Periods are 1 ½ hours long. Transcripts: A transcript is the official record of all courses taken and credit earned. It is maintained by the school and updated each semester from grade reports in February and June. Only semester grades earn credit and appear on transcripts. Attendance and cumulative grade point averages are also included on transcripts. Colleges and/or employers use transcripts when they evaluate a student s record. Contact the Counseling Office to request copies of transcripts to send to colleges or employers. 2
6 Honor Roll: Springfield High School students may earn academic recognition when they achieve a GPA of 3.5 or higher at the end of a semester grading period. Students must be enrolled and must pass at least four (4) classes per semester with no more than one P in a graded class to be eligible for the honor roll. National Honor Society: Students who maintain a GPA of 3.5 or above in graded classes and exhibit character, leadership, and service to the community are eligible for nomination to the National Honor Society during their junior year. Candidates must be a member of the junior or the senior class. ACCELERATED PROGRAMS A variety of options exist for accelerated programs of study at Springfield High School. Students may pursue advanced course work in College Now and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. College Now options are available in: Language Arts Second Language Drafting Math Fine Arts: Glass & Ceramics Auto/Mechanics Science Business Metals/Welding Social Science Woodworking See pages 9-10 for details on current offerings. In addition, we have RTEC and Expanded Options for students who require work beyond what is offered at Springfield High School. Some of these options involve an additional expense for students. Students enrolled in accelerated programs can gain enhanced college level preparation, earn advanced placement credit, or earn college credit through Lane Community College. All students are encouraged to select courses to help them achieve their maximum academic potential. SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES A full range of special education services is available for students with special needs. Special services are available for students with learning disabilities, orthopedic impairments and other handicapping conditions. Life Skills courses, occupational/vocational services and transition services are available for students with special needs identified on an Individual Education Plan IEP. Students who qualify for Special Education programs will receive modified and individualized instruction as specified in their IEP. Students identified for special services in elementary or middle school will continue to receive services appropriate to their special needs, academic achievement and abilities while at Springfield High School. Students and parents may get additional information from counselors. ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM A comprehensive English Language Development (ELD) Program is offered at Springfield High School for students whose first language is not English. Upon entry into high school, ELD students progress through an assessment process designed to provide baseline placement data for counselors and ELD staff. Information provided through this process is used to develop an appropriate individualized educational program for all ELD learners. Students are scheduled for participation in various components of the ELD Program based on their assessment scores for primary language literacy and proficiency in English. 3
