As we kick off the second part of our school year we wanted to remind parents and students of a few important dates and pieces of information to keep in mind. Mark your Calendar February 11-6 th Grade Open 7 PM February 12- NO SCHOOL District In- Service for Staff February 15- No School President s Day March 18- End of 3 rd Quarter K-6 Early Release March No School Spring Break May 30 th - No School Memorial Day May 31- June 2- End of Semester testing Early Release May 31-1:15 release June 1-1:15 release June 2- Noon release June 2- Last Day of School NOON Release Open Enrollment- If your student is attending Riverglen on Open Enrollment you should have received an Open Enrollment Continuation form. If you did not, please contact Mrs. Elliott in the Counseling Office. The deadline for those forms is February 1 st so please make sure you get them in on time. Also, any 8 th graders who want to Open Enroll to a High School other than their home school need to fill out an Open Enrollment Application which you can find at boiseschools.org. Those can be turned into our counseling office and we will route them to the appropriate schools. Student Drivers at Riverglen- Many of our 9 th graders are taking Drivers Training or are about to get their drivers licenses. If students drive to school we must have a copy of their license, insurance and registration as well as a Riverglen Parking Permit. If this is a topic that applies to you make sure to look at pages 3 and 4 of this newsletter. We encourage all parents to stay involved and be an active part of your child s education. Do not hesitate to contact our staff with questions or concerns. Don t forget to check out our school website at for Riverglen information and updates. 2 Students of the Month Congratulations to the following students who were selected as our November Students of the Month. These students exemplify our Grizzly CORE values each and every day! 7th Grade: Charly Weber & Zachery Ip 8th Grade: Sanaa Abdulkarim & Lucas Caballero 9th Grade: Apryl Peterson & Tyler Wood Along with a certificate and a Riverglen or Capital t-shirt, each student and their parents were invited to join us at our quarterly luncheon to celebrate. December/January Students of the Month will be announced by the end of the month. Way to go Grizzlies! A Reminder from the Attendance Office To Excuse Absences and Late Arrivals To excuse absences and tardies, please call our 24-hour attendance line at within 2 days of the absence or tardy, or provide an excuse via a signed note submitted to the office. Students will be marked truant if not excused within 48 hours of the absence. Permits To Leave Parents, if you must pick up your child during the school day, please allow at least one hour prior notice to our office before picking up your child. Students must have a Permit To Leave when leaving school grounds during the day. You may call the office directly at or your child may submit a note to the office when they arrive at school in the morning. The note must be signed by a parent requesting their dismissal time. A Message from Our Nurse Guidelines for Keeping Sick Students Home Colds/Flu: Please keep your child home if he/she has a fever over 100 degrees or is experiencing discomfort that would interfere with his/her ability to perform in school. (i.e.; uncontrollable coughing, severe lack of energy) If your child experiences green nasal discharge that continues throughout the day, a cough lasting longer than 10 days, or is accompanied by fever or chills or is productive of discolored sputum, consult with your physician. Diarrhea/Vomiting: A child with diarrhea/vomiting should stay at home and return to school only after being symptom free for 24 hours. Fever: A child should remain at home with a fever greater than 100 degrees. The child can return to school after he/she has been fever free for 24 hours (without fever reducing medicine such as Tylenol or Motrin) Nurse Ryther Educating Today for a Better Tomorrow

3 STUDENT DRIVER REQUIREMENTS 1. If it is necessary to drive to school, students must register their vehicle with the School Resource Officer. During the school hours students are not allowed to return to their vehicles without permission. 2. The registration requirements for a student to drive a vehicle to and from the Riverglen/TVMSC campus is as follows: a. Students must present the following documents to the SRO: i. Valid driver s license ii. Vehicle registration certificate iii. Proof of insurance iv. (Vehicle registration and insurance documents are required for every vehicle the student is to operate to/from campus.) b. Student drivers will only be authorized to transport themselves and their siblings to and from school except as authorized in paragraph c below. c. If parents desire to authorize their student driver to transport other students ot and from school, the requirements are as follows: i. NOTE; Idaho Graduated Driver License Program stipulations: 1. Drivers under age of 17 are required during first 6 months from the date license was issued to: a. Limit the number of passengers in the car who are under the age of 17 to not more than one passenger, UNLES the passengers are related to the driver by blood, adoption or marriage. ii. Letter from the student driver s parents listing which students their son/daughter is authorized to transport. iii. Letter from the parents of the student to be transported detailing with whom their son/daughter is granted permission to ride with. iv. Also please indicate if the permission is for one time only or open ended. v. No Exceptions. d. All occupants of any vehicle are required to wear seatbelts if the vehicle is so equipped. It is the student driver s responsibility to ensure this is done. e. Failure to adhere completely to these requirements could result in loss of the privilege to drive to school. 3. Driving is a heavy responsibility for new drivers and also a potential liability for all involved. The Riverglen/TVMSC staff desires to ensure a safe and secure campus environment. To do so, it is imperative to keep track of the vehicles that are on campus. Additionally, we believe it is important to make certain only authorized drivers operate vehicles coming and going from campus as well as making certain student drivers and passengers have the full support and knowledge of their parents. 5 Second Quarter AVID Adventures Second quarter was a great time to be an AVID student at Riverglen! The seventh graders all enjoyed an awesome field trip to Boise State University, where they toured the engineering department. We got to see what it's like on a college campus and experiment with engineering professors and students riding a segway, using a thermal heat powered camera, 3-D printer, powering machines through energy, and exploring the world through interactive 3D glasses. Afterwards, we enjoyed some fun team-building time at Jump Time. The 8th grade classes second quarter theme for AVID 8 was Season of Service. With the help of guest speakers and a trip to the Idaho Food Bank to volunteer our time, we learned about non profits in our community. The 9th graders had a special opportunity to attend the annual college fair, where they were able to mingle with college reps and explore options for colleges near and far. 9th grade students will be attending an AVID orientation day at Capital high school on January 21, where they will be able to meet fellow AVID students from Fairmont, tour Capital, visit honors and AP classes, and have some fun. ALL Riverglen AVID students will kick off Semester 2 with some team-building fun Jan. 21 in the afternoon. We are super excited to be adding fourteen new AVID students to the program next semester! Lastly, a special shout-out to Jose Duran, Sanaa Abdukarim, and Rosie Wilson, who were honored as Riverglen Students of the Month last semester. Way to go grizzlies! 5

6 Counselor s Corner Please watch for Registration information coming home! Pre-Registration Schedule 10th Grade Counselors will be in 9th grade English classes on January 29 and February 1 to give out information about high school classes and graduation requirements. Capital High School will come to Riverglen on Friday, February 5 to pre-register all 9th grade students going to Capital next year. For those 9th grade students planning on attending another Boise District high school, they can register for their respective school at that time also. 9th Grade Counselors will be in the 8th grade World Studies classes on Wednesday, February 10 to give out information in regard to next year s classes and requirements. Counselors will then pre-register for 9th grade during student s English 8 classes on February 18. 8th Grade Counselors will be in the 7th grade World Studies classes on Tuesday, February 2 to give out information in regard to next year s classes and requirements. Counselors will then pre-register for 8th grade during student s English 7 classes on Tuesday, February 9. Rigs & Gigs All 9th grade students will attend Rigs & Gigs at the Dennis Technical Education Center on Wednesday, January 27 from 9:45-12:00. The Dennis Technical Education Center offers hands-on classes in 19 different career areas.this is a great opportunity for our 9th grade students to see the many opportunities to earn college credit while attending high school!
