1 Uni High athletics Uni High athletics had another banner year, with 234 student athletes, 18 new school records, four students named News-Gazette athletes of the year and one student qualifying for the Olympic trials in swimming. Participation in sports remains at high levels, and our teams continue to improve. Our students made regular appearances at state-level championships this year, as well as in The News-Gazette as athletes of the year and on all-area teams. Sophomore swimmer Ema Rajic broke four school records, was named All-State and All- American and qualified for for the Olympic trials in swimming, where she finished 49 th overall in the 100 breaststroke. She was also News-Gazette All Area Girls Swimmer of the Year. Three other student were News-Gazette athletes of the year. Sophomore Arielle Summit was The News-Gazette Girls Runner of the Year. Senior Panos Voulgaris was News-Gazette Boys Soccer Player of the Year, and Junior Varun Chopra was News-Gazette Boys Golfer of the Year. Uni students also represented Uni well at the state level. The Girls Cross-Country team was second in the state. The boys soccer team enjoyed the best record in school history (24-2-1), winning Illinois regional, section and super-sectional titles before placing fourth in the state final. The year rounded out with track and field. Four Uni students went to state (Christopher Bauer, Anika Kimme, Annmarie Michael and Arielle Summitt), and new school records were set in Boys Track for the triple jump (Bauer), 4x400 Relay (Lee, Ramkumar, Anukwu, Bauer), 4x800 Relay (Bauer, Lee, Anukwu, Coleman), and 4x100 Relay (Bauer, Lee, Anukwu, Coleman). 5 Subbie Girls Basketball The subbie girls basketball team had a very fun and exciting year and advanced in the IESA Regional with a win over Gifford Grade School. Subbie Boys Basketball The subbie boys basketball improved throughout the season with wins over Thomasboro and DeLand-Weldon. High School Girls Basketball The team won 3 of their last five games, placing 2 nd in the E.C.I.C. Conference Tourney. They also advance in the IHSA Regional with a win over Judah Christian.
