9 RIGOR OF CLASSES vs. G. P. A. Do not sacrifice rigor of your curriculum to maintain and/or salvage your G.P.A. Rigor translates to better test scores (i.e. OGT, ACT, SAT). Colleges value test scores and rigor of studies over G.P.A. HOW COLLEGES SEE YOU At a recent counselor conference with the head of admissions from Miami University, she stated that the number one factor for a successful transition to college is the rigor of the student s high school schedule. 9
10 MIAMISBURG RESULTS (According to the College Readiness letter for MHS) ACT recently published the results of ACT students that test from Miamisburg High School. We are currently above the state average in every category. M.H.S State of Ohio English Mathematics Reading Science Composite Meeting all four 44% 33% Where we could still use major improvement is in our college readiness. 44% of our students are college ready in all four areas. The state average is 33%. Many of our students are testing into developmental classes, costing students time and money. Improvement in your ACT scores comes through challenging yourself everyday with a rigorous college-prep/honors curriculum. The ACT is scored based on the number of correct answers with no penalty for guessing. www/act.org/contacts Until recently, the ACT was the test for the Midwest, while the SAT was the test for schools in the Northeast and on both coasts. Now, however, most schools accept both tests. ** Changes will be coming to the SAT test SAT Aptitude test, testing reasoning and verbal abilities. Three components: Critical Reasoning, Mathematics and a required Writing test. New version introduced in 2005 with a mandatory Writing test. The SAT has a correction for guessing. That is, they take off for wrong answers. sat.collegeboard.org/register 11
