7 Support We re offering multi-layered support to suit all students during the challenges this year. This will include both Pastoral support and Academic support.

8 Academic Support This will include: Home Learning to extend and consolidate knowledge. Regular assessment and reporting Online resources to support and extend learning (Blended Learning) Trial exams (simulating all aspects of the final exams) Revision/Intervention sessions after school support in English and Maths for selected students Academic mentoring Sessions focussing on knowledge retention strategies

9 Pastoral Support This will include: Mentors (staff and sixth form mentors) Group sessions on managing stress Access to school counsellor and other external agencies Development of the whole person through our new Character Development Scheme Sessions focusing on resilience Motivation by use of icards and Passport to Prom

13 Reformed GCSEs Introduction of reformed GCSEs in all subjects, started in September 2015 with the majority of the reformed subjects culminating with their first exams this year. Linear exams (i.e. no modules) Terminal assessment (all exams at end of Y11) Reduction in controlled assessment More content Increased challenge New 9-1 grading scale

15 Mathematics Overview There will be three parallel examination papers each counting for a third of the final mark. There will be one non calculator and two calculator papers. Each paper will last 1 hour, 30 minutes and has 80 marks. There will be no GCSE Mathematics coursework or controlled assessment.

16 Mathematics Higher Tier Higher Papers now start at a higher level than the previous GCSE which started at a D. The content now goes beyond the GCSE and there is a greater overlap between GCSE and AS Maths. The new higher tier will cover six grades (Grade 4 9) instead of five grades (D A*) allowing for more differentiation at the top end of the grades. Previously 25% of questions were targeted at A/A*, but now 50% of questions in each paper are targeted at the equivalent 7-9. The style of questions are more challenging that previously and far more open ended so students have to interpret what Mathematics they have to use.

17 Mathematics Foundation Tier Foundation Papers now reach a higher level than the old GCSE which previously was a C grade. The more difficult topics on the Foundation are equivalent to a Grade B with some topics previously classed as grade A. All exam boards are advising schools to enter students previously working at a B grade for the foundation tier.

18 Mathematics What are we doing at Sandringham? Groups We will constantly be reviewing these tiers through advice from the exam board, previous experience and liaising with other schools.

19 Mathematics What are we doing at Sandringham? Intensive Revision Day To be arranged towards the end of the spring term. This will be for Grade 4/5 borderline students 6th Form Maths Tutors Approximately 10 students assigned for weekly sessions with 6th Form students in the spring term. This will be a 10 week programme.

24 Science There are two different pathways : Triple Science Combined Science: Trilogy (Both cover Biology, Chemistry and Physics) Both pathways 6 exams at the end of Year 11 No more controlled assessments, instead students complete required practicals : 21 for Combined, 28 for Triple.

28 How to prepare for PE Exams Theory There will be lunchtime revision sessions for the theory papers Use websites such as BBC Bitesize and Memrise Revision guides / workbooks Past papers Practical Familiarise yourself with the sports available for assessment Attend extra curricular clubs / clubs outside of school

29 Modern Foreign Languages AQA syllabus GCSE divided into 3 main subject areas called Themes. Each theme is divided into four topics. Course books relate directly to the exam requirements. There are no more controlled assessments Revision from the start is crucial.

31 Modern Foreign Languages Vocabulary learning policy: One vocabulary test every two weeks Students will be informed of vocabulary to be learnt Vocabulary learning tasks will appear on Show My Homework Vocabulary project with Dr van der Spoel focusing on year 1 vocabulary revision: Starting in October - full information to follow

33 History Support Targeted revision classes will run weekly after-school from These classes will begin in February and will run up until the exams. Suggested revision guides and additional materials will be recommended and this information will be shared and discussed at the first Parents Evening. As the course now include three exams (and no Controlled Assessment) it is more vital than ever that students have a longterm revision plan in place from February.

35 Geography Recommendations: - Start revising from February. If you are unclear about anything then please speak to a teacher early. - With the removal of controlled assessment you will need to show 100% of your understanding through the exams. Extra support will be provided to students as we approach the exams.
