6 Guideline-Idaho College & University Minimum Core Requirements Each institution may have additional or varied requirements, contact the institution for exact entrance requirements. Idaho College & University Contact Information English: 8-credits (4 years) minimum requirement Composition, Literature, or courses that integrate composition, language, and literature. Humanities & Language: 2-credits (1 year) minimum requirement 2 semesters Literature, History, Philosophy, Foreign Language, and related study of 2 or more of the traditional humanities disciplines. Foreign language study is strongly recommended. Math: 6-credits (3 years) minimum requirement Algebra I or Applied Math I, Geometry or Applied Math II, and Algebra II. (Applied Math courses must be approved by the Idaho State Department of Education.); An additional two (2) credits are strongly recommended; Four of the required mathematics credits must be taken in the 10 th, 11 th, and/or 12 th grades. Natural Science: 6-credits (3 years) minimum requirement Anatomy, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Earth Science, Physical Science, Physiology, Physics, and Zoology. At least 2 credits must involve lab science experience. 7 9 th & 10 th Grade TEAMS Purpose and Structure A TEAM is a group of grade-level students (9 th or 10 th ) assigned to a Team (1, 2, or 3) of required content area instructors who teach the same core students within each specified grade level. The structure of the TEAMS allows for students to: reveal their own educational autonomy; exhibit a sense of individual identity; participate in a personalized and relevant instructional environment; demonstrate an awareness of real-life accountability. Freshmen and Sophomore students enter a TEAM based on his/her grade level. Each School has 2 or 3 Teams depending on the size of the grade-level class. Each Team includes 4-5 core content teachers who share the same group of students. Students in the class will be introduced to the other media courses the art department offers and learn about formal and expressive aspects while experiencing a variety of styles and subject matter. Students will also learn how to use and keep a sketchbook. Throughout the first semester, the emphasis of the class will be drawing from observation and composition studies. During the second semester students will transition to painting. The emphasis will be to develop their technical painting skills in watercolor, tempera, and acrylic. This course involves significantly more commitment and accomplishment than the typical high school art course. Emphasis will be on broadening skills, developing creativity, studio production, portfolio development, individual research, and critique. Students may opt to complete the College Board ADVANCED PLACEMENT Portfolio requirements to receive ADVANCED PLACEMENT Credit. These requirements include developing a concentration/personal direction, breadth/broadening skills and media experiences as well as demonstrating the achievement of quality work. The student may also use their portfolio from this class for application to post-secondary art schools, college scholarships, juried art exhibitions, and internships or jobs. --- COMMUNICATIONS --- CO100 COMPETITIVE SPEECH AND DEBATE, Year, Two Credits PREREQUISITE: 9 th 12 th grade, None This course deals with basic argumentation based on logical reasoning and analysis used in both competitive debating and speaking. Students study a variety of types of debate in addition to individual speaking events. One interscholastic competition is required each semester to pass the class and students must meet eligibility requirements in order to compete. To be successful, a student must commit significant time for preparation and trips to competition. One year of debate fulfills the state requirement for one Credit of speech. CO110 INTRO TO THEATRE, Year, Two Credits PREREQUISITE: 9 th -12 th grades, None This is an academic and performance course in the basic skills of theatre arts. Students will learn about the many different aspects of the field, which must be combined in order to create a theatrical production, such as pantomime, comedy and dramatic acting, monologues, ensemble acting, Shakespeare, children s theatre and auditioning. This is not solely an acting class. Some of the grading is subjective, but this is based on effort rather than talent. This course also involves academic material, so be prepared to think, work, act, and have fun all at the same time. CO150 EXPLORING COMPUTER SCIENCE, Year, Two Credits PREREQUISITE: 10 th 12 th grade. Offered at CHS and SHS for student s district wide. This is an introductory course open to all interested students. Computer Science Principles will be offered in and will be offered for College Credit. Ethical and social issues in computing, and careers in computing, are woven throughout. Units utilize a variety of tools/platforms, and culminate with final projects around the following topics: 1. Human Computer Interaction: Students are introduced to the major components of the computer, including: input, output, memory, storage, processing, software, and the operating system. Students consider how Internet elements (e.g. , chat, WWW) are organized, engage in effective searching, and focus on productive use of . Fundamental notions of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and ergonomics are introduced. 2. Problem Solving: This unit covers the basic steps in algorithmic problem-solving, including the problem statement and exploration, examination of sample instances, design, program coding, testing, and verification. 3. Web Design: This section prepares students to take the role of a developer by expanding their knowledge of programming and Web page design and applying it to the creation of Web pages, programs, and documentation for users and equipment. 4. Programming: Students are introduced to some basic issues associated with program design and development. Students design algorithms and programming solutions to a variety of computational problems, using Scratch. Programming problems should include control structures, functions, parameters, objects and classes, structured programming and event-driven programming techniques. 5. Computing and Data Analysis: In this unit students explore how computing has facilitated new methods of managing and interpreting data. Students will use computers to translate, process and visualize data in order to find patterns and test hypotheses. 6. Robotics: Students apply previously learned topics to the study of robotics and work in small groups to build and program a robot to perform a required task. Students will also be introduced to AutoCAD software where the student will become able to maneuver within the program to complete mechanical single and multi-view drawings. By the end of the first semester the student will draw 3D view isometric drawings in a mechanical drawing.
