MERIT DIPLOMA In addition to meeting all Standard Diploma Requirements: Attain one or more Industry Certifications
Orange Technical College Dual Enrollment What is CTE (Career and Technical Education)? What and where is Orange Technical College? What programs are offered at OTC campuses? What CTE classes does WOHS offer on site? Who can benefit from dual enrollment CTE courses? AP weighted and Academically challenging Rigorous learning opportunities Nationally recognized guidelines for curriculum Industry Certifications College credits: earn up to 27 college credits NO COST and TRANSPORTATION is provided
Advanced Placement The College Board is a mission-driven not-for-profit organization that connects students to college success and opportunity. - WOHS offers 26 different AP courses including: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, AP Physics, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Statistics, English Composition, English Literature, Capstone Seminar, Research Seminar, World History, US History, US Government, Human Geography, European History, Psychology, Macroeconomics, Spanish, Spanish Literature, 3D Art (Ceramics), 2D Art, Studio Art (Drawing), Music Theory, AP Art History Over 1,500 West Orange High School students enrolled in at least one AP class
Why take an AP Class? Academically challenging Rigorous learning opportunities Nationally recognized guidelines for curriculum and assessment College admission Many colleges and universities recognize the rigor of AP classes in their applicants GPA- 6 point scale AP can help students get ahead in college Score a 3 or higher on AP exam, class grade adjusted to an A (WOHS only)** All classes on WOHS Campus
Frequent concerns with taking an AP class I don t think I will pass (or score high enough) on the AP exam to get college credit. You don t need to score a 5, many colleges grant credit, or placement, with a score of a 3. Taking AP classes could hurt my GPA. Your decision to take an AP course shows admissions officers that you are willing to take on the academic challenge of collegelevel coursework and expectations. Remember that quarterly grades do not count towards GPA.
Supports for AP students at WOHS AP Tutoring Program on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the following locations 2D Art - Young 502 3D Art - Newland 534 English Language - Konradt 530, Wells 561 Research - Wells 561 Seminar - Konradt 530 Statistics* - Thompson 524 (before school) US Govt./Politics - Acosta-Garcia 432, Callahan 566 (Thur.) 16 AP versus Dual Enrollment There is no right or wrong, better or worse Colleges are looking for well-rounded students that challenge themselves in their coursework- this includes AP and DE courses Much consideration should be given to where you want to end up Out of State or In-State?
What is GPA? GPA = Grade Point Average A calculation of your average score on a weighted and unweighted scale. Different institutions calculate GPA differently. Honors, AP, DE, CTE, and other classes have varied weights. Here in Orange County- AP, DE, CTE all weighted on a 6-point scale. Honors classes are weighted on a 5- point scale. Unweighted (standard) courses can lower your weighted GPA, but cannot lower your unweighted GPA Quarter/semester grades versus final grades Class Final Grade Examples: I take 4 classes this year and earn the following: How will my GPA be calculate? Unweighted Points Weighted Points PE A 4 4 English Honors Math Honors History Honors A 4 5 B 3 4 A 4 5 Overall Class Final Grade Unweighted Points Weighted Points PE A 4 4 DE English A 4 6 AP Math B 3 5 AP History C 2 4 Overall
