3 The International Baccalaureate Organization The International Baccalaureate Organization (IB) is a non-profit educational foundation based in Switzerland. The IB offers four programs for students; Primary Years Program (PYP) for kindergarten through grade 5, Middle Years Program (MYP) for grades 6 through 10, Diploma Program (DP) and Career Program (CP) for grades 11 and 12. There are more than one million IB students at over 3,000 IB world schools in over 140 countries around the world. Marietta City Schools offers the full four-program continuum across the district. Primary Years Program is taught to all students at Sawyer Road Elementary School (authorized 2007.) A.L. Burruss Elementary School is a candidate school seeking authorization from the IBO to offer the IB PYP. Middle Years Program is taught to all students in grades 6-10 at Marietta Sixth Grade Academy, Marietta Middle School, and Marietta High School. Students who are interested in later entering the IB Diploma Program take MYP honors courses in English, social studies, science and world language in grades 9-10 to prepare themselves for the presumed knowledge for entrance into the Diploma Program. Students who wish to seek the IB Diploma or Career Certificate should work to fulfill the requirements of the MHS IB Middle Years Certificate. There is no written application to the program. Diploma Program at Marietta High School is for juniors and seniors who seek the IB Diploma or wish to take individual IB Diploma courses. Career-related Program at Marietta High School is for juniors and seniors who have begun one of our industry-certified career pathways in grades 9 or 10 and wish to seek the IB Career Certificate in grades The IB provides a balanced curriculum and high standards of assessment. IB offers an advanced curriculum for students and teaches students how to become critical thinkers and life-long learners. The emphasis of the curriculum is on how a student processes, analyzes, and integrates the facts presented to them instead of how many facts a student can memorize and recall on an exam. Every IB teacher has gone through rigorous trainings in order to learn about the curriculum and exams their students will be expected to take. IB Mission Statement The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. IB promotes intercultural understanding and respect To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. IB website: IB Learner Profile IB learners strive to be: Inquirers Knowledgeable Thinkers Communicators Principled Open-minded Caring Risk-takers Balanced Reflective Marietta High School expects that all IB students are willing to further develop these 10 attributes in and outside of school. Students who embrace the Learner Profile are found to be happier, more successful IB Diploma and Career-elated candidates. 3

4 IB Diploma Program Students who wish to receive the full IB Diploma or take at least one IB course (including IB Career-related Program students) must plan their four years at Marietta High School carefully. They are therefore asked to learn about these requirements from the website, this handbook, and through information meetings presented at the school. Dates for IB information meetings are posted on the school website and the MHS IB website. The MHS MYP honors courses in grades 9-10 are more advanced but similarly sequenced as the standard MHS MYP classes. Students must plan to fulfill district, state, IB, and college admission requirements. IB Diploma students must complete and pass the appropriate pre-requisites for the IB classes prior to the start of their junior year. All students who enter MHS in grade 9 who wish to seek the IB Diploma or IB Career-related Certificate are expected to fulfill the requirements for the MYP Certificate. Students who enter in grade 10 or later will be individually evaluated for IB Diploma or IB Career Program readiness. The IB Diploma courses are divided into Higher Level (HL) courses and Standard Level (SL) courses. These courses can only be taken during the 11 th and 12 th grade years. All IB Diploma students and parents need to understand that: Each IB Diploma course in each IB subject consists of two IB classes, Year 1 & Year 2, each two semesters in length. Two years of study in each course is needed to prepare for the IB exam. For example, students must complete IB Literature I during the junior year and IB Literature II during the senior year to take the IB exam. All HL courses must be studied over the 11 th and 12 th grades. If a student starts an IB class in any year, they are expected to complete the IB class for that year. They must complete Years 1 and 2 of the IB course to take the IB exam. Students are encouraged to take IB exams. If a student takes an IB class they are expected to complete all of the requirements for the IB examination regardless of whether or not they plan to take the exam. For students seeking the IB Diploma or IB Career-related Certificate, the fees for IB exams are paid for by Marietta City Schools. Diploma Course students pay for individual IB exams with one exception; MCS will pay for HL exams for students who take two or more IB exams at Higher Level. Students register and pay for IB exams in October of the school year that they will sit for the exam. IB sets the one-time registration fee and the fee for each exam at the beginning of each school year. Contact the IB Office for fee amounts in September before exam registration. Every IB class is weighted 1 additional quality by MHS and ½ quality point by the Georgia Student Finance Commission. Transfer students who wish to seek the IB Diploma or Career Certificate are evaluated for program readiness on an individual basis. To receive the IB Diploma students must: 1. Pass exams in 6 subject areas of the model (right.) A student must take 3-4 HL courses/exams and the rest as SL courses/exams. 2. Successfully complete the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course and its assessments. 3. Write an Extended Essay of approximately 4000 words in one of the six areas of the hexagon. 4. Complete Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) activities approximately 2-4 hours per week working on their activity. For more details, see section titled How to Get the IB Diploma. 4

5 IB Career-related Program The Career-related Program is for students who wish to engage in career-related learning while gaining transferable and lifelong skills in applied knowledge, critical thinking, communication, and cross-cultural engagement. Through the CP core, students develop personal qualities and professional skills, as well as intellectual habits required for lifelong learning. Each school chooses the career-related study most suited to local conditions and the needs of its students. The career-related study must satisfy IB criteria for accreditation, assessment and quality assurance. For more details, see the section How to Get the IB Career-related Certificate. 5

13 IB Policies Students and parents should be aware of the four school-wide policies that also connect to the IB philosophies and regulations. These policies can be found on the MHS website. The policies are: Admissions Policy Academic Honesty Policy Assessment Policy Inclusive Education/Special Needs Policy Language Policy MHS Honor Code HONOR: a keen sense of ethical conduct We, the students of the Marietta High School International Baccalaureate Program, dedicate ourselves to the highest level of academic integrity. Our strong aversion to academic dishonesty of any type is grounded in the following beliefs: Cheating is the first step to later failure in life. Authenticity of knowledge cannot be acquired through academic dishonesty. Evidence of cheating disgraces a student in the eyes of classmates, teachers, parents and administration. Cheating lowers feelings of self-worth. A student s genuine ability cannot be measured when he or she has falsified school work. Cheating is morally wrong. Academic dishonesty includes the following overt and covert actions: Altering grades on student papers or a teacher s record book Viewing another student s test papers or allowing another student to have a clear view of a test paper Giving or receiving information from a test or quiz prior to the administration of the test Stealing of copies of tests or quizzes The use of electronic devices, hand signals, secret codes, or oral communication to share answers during a test The act of plagiarism on a research paper or another assigned paper False verification of CAS or any other volunteer hours The use of papers written by other IB students in other IB schools or those retrieved from internet or other electronic retrieval systems Copying other classmates work in any way Shared writing of assigned papers or other out-of-class written assignments The reliance upon other group members to do all of the work for a project grade Any other act that involves the acquisition of a grade in which dishonesty is involved For the violation of the IB Code of Honor any or all of the following consequences may apply: The writing of a discipline referral to the appropriate assistant principal and counselor A grade of a zero on the assignment or test Notification of parents and teachers Suspension from school MAC In-school suspension Work detail Saturday School Notification of advisors of campus honor groups Negative references for college applications or scholarships 13
