1 A Weekly Publication of the Sprague High School Community Volume 45 Number 18, January 27, 2017 Congratulations to the #2 ranked Sprague wrestlers who finished second at The Oregon Wrestling Classic. The Olys went 6-1 with a win over #4 ranked Newberg in the semifinals. They dropped a tough loss to #1 and nationally ranked Roseburg in the finals. Sprague was led by Michael Murphy and Daniel McClung both of whom went undefeated. The Classic is widely considered the state championships of dual meets and this is the highest finish in school history! Great job wrestlers!

2 Second semester is beginning on Monday, January 30 th. The following information will be helpful to your students as they prepare for this day. Students will be able to find their second semester schedules on StudentVue or on Monday morning they can request a hard copy of their schedule in either the Main Office or College and Career Center. We are asking students to request their schedules before school from 7:00am to 7:25am. All students should attend the classes on their schedule even if they have a desire to change courses. Students will not be able to line up outside the College and Career Center to get a schedule change nor will they be allowed to exit classes to visit the College and Career Center. Instead, the following steps need to be taken by students who have schedule change requests: MONDAY, TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY (Jan 30th to Feb 1st) ONLY students with a needs class listed on their schedule will be allowed to come to the College and Career Center and wait for a schedule change. They must come down during the needs class period listed on their schedule. All other student schedule change requests involving the below topics will be handled the following ways : 1. Level Changes (within a subject - honors to grade level, etc): The student must go to the teacher and request the change. The teacher s the counselor requesting level change (up or down). 2. Release : Students who wish to add a release need to visit the College and Career Center and complete a green Release Form, have their parent sign it, then turn it back in. 3. Teacher Aide : Students who wish to add a teacher aide period need to visit the College and Career Center and complete an orange Teacher Aide Form, have the teacher sign it and turn it back in. 4. Already took this class (Student has a class on their schedule they have completed already): The student notifies the teacher listed on their schedule and the teacher sends an to the counseling department requesting a change of class. The student stays in the assigned class until the schedule change is adjusted by their counselor. In all these cases, students must complete the needed task and wait for a response while attending the classes on their schedule. The counselor will call them out of class (it may take a day or two) or be sent a new schedule once a change has been made. THURSDAY AND FRIDAY (Feb 2nd and 3rd) On Thursday February 2 nd and Friday February 3 rd the online schedule change system (located at ) will open again and students will be allowed to request elective changes during this time. Students will need to submit their requests online to their counselor and based on space available their requests will be allowed or denied. Any changes in schedules after February 3 rd will require students to visit the College and Career Center during non-class hours to pick up a green Sprague High School Schedule Change Request form and get it signed by teachers and/or parents. Schedule changes that occur after the 3 rd week of the semester will be subject to the F penalty clause listed in the student handbook. 4 Sprague Track and Field is gearing up for its 2017 season. There will be a brief informational meeting on Tuesday 1/31 at 2:30 pm in the Weight Room for all Sprague Students wanting to be involved. Winter workouts for team members not involved in a Winter Sport will begin on Tuesday 2/7 at 2:45 in the Stadium. A complete calendar can be found on the Sprague Athletic Website and on athletic.net. The Sprague Track and Field Winter Camp will be on Feb from 3:15-5:30. This camp is offered for not only all Sprague Track Athletes, but also for our Judson and Crossler Junior Olys. The price for the camp is $40. Forms are available from our website, on site at both Middle Schools and from Coach Charles. The OSAA official start date is 2/27. Parents and athletes can begin preparing by making sure their physical is updated and that they have cleared the athletic office to participate beginning on 2/13. Finally, Sprague Track will be hosting 4 home meets this Spring on 3/15, 4/5, 4/19 and 5/3. If you are available to help us put on the meets please contact our athletic office or Coach Charles at charles_brent@salkeiz.k12.or.us. No training is necessary and all help is greatly needed and appreciated by our staff and team.

5 Alternative Energy Air Cars Mr. Johnston s Environmental Science class is constructing alternative energy cars. This is a hands-on activity which students learn about design versus functionality, use of tools, performance analysis, and problem solving. The goal is to build a car that uses air power and has the greatest possible range. The cars are assessed on the distance (range) that they are able to travel. Students spend several class periods working in groups, testing their car performance, modifying and retesting their modifications. It s frustrating. says car builder Katie. You build the cars and then they don t run. Then we have to fix parts, It s trial and error. It may take a few times to get it. I like doing the cars more than reading the book says another. Students are able to understand the difficulties associated with developing real-life alternative energy vehicles.

6 February s Spanish Club meeting is on Wednesday, the 1 st, in room 124 at lunch. We will be learning about the, which is the Day of Love and Friendship. Everyone is welcome to stop by for a cultural presentation and to create a Valentine in Spanish. Please Contact Sarah Bucholz (Main Office) for Ticket Information Tickets Also Sold at the Door Proceeds will help fund AVID Student Activities The Sprague Football Coaches and players would like to thank Law Enforcement for Youth for donating just over $20,000 worth of brand new shoulder pads to the Sprague Football program. Law Enforcement for Youth started the YESS (Youth Equipment and Sports Safety) program several years ago when the Board of Directors acknowledged youth participation in sports, particularly contact sports, put those youths at risk of serious injury. However, the board also acknowledged the important benefits to youth development sports participation provides. With the belief that sports are important and valuable for youth development, but does place them at risk for serious injury, YESS was developed to address improving the safety of youth athletes while participating in sports with a focus on contact sports and concussion management. Since the Development of the YESS program over $150,000 worth of protective equipment has been granted to numerous youth sports programs. YESS program recently has provided football related equipment grants to Waldo Middle School (helmets/shoulder pads/game pants), Sprague Youth Football (helmets/shoulder pads), Judson Middle School (helmets), North Salem High School (helmets), McKay High School (shoulder pads), sideline kits & 1st aid kits to Sprague/West/North youth football programs and more. The YESS program assists other sports programs as well and is not limited to football, however the emphasis is on contact sports. They have provided equipment grants for other sports such as baseball, softball and lacrosse. A representative from Law Enforcement for Youth said We were very happy to include Sprague High School football in our latest round of equipment grants and hope the shoulder pads help protect your athletes for years to come. The Sprague Football program is extremely grateful for the very generous contribution to its program, and hopes to put the shoulder pads to good use this fall!

14 Make-up days for snow closures announced Due to inclement weather, Salem-Keizer students have missed four full school days, had one early release and one late start this school year. Time at school is essential to student success. To make up for some lost instructional time, the district has decided to make changes to the school calendar. Three school days have been added to the calendar: Thursday, March 23, 2017, will be a school day for all students. Parent-Teacher conferences will take place after school and in the evening. Thursday and Friday, June 15 and 16, 2017, will be school days for all students except graduating seniors. High schools will develop a revised schedule for second semester finals. Dates of high school graduation ceremonies will not change. Please be aware that additional calendar changes could be made if there is more inclement weather. School Board passes Safe and Welcoming Schools Resolution At its Tuesday, January 10, 2017, meeting, members of the School Board passed a resolution reinforcing their expectations for school and district staff to create and maintain safe and welcoming schools. The Board and Superintendent Christy Perry have jointly written a letter for parents about the resolution and why it is important. Below is a paragraph from the letter that explains the expectations put forth in the resolution: In basic terms, it [the resolution] says everyone is welcome in our schools regardless of race, gender identity, sexuality, immigration status, country of origin or other factors. It also says that everyone is entitled to academic success regardless of their background or family circumstances and each student will be provided the necessary supports to ensure that success.
