3 Ontario Secondary School Diploma (O.S.S.D) 40 community service hours Literacy Test (in M4) 30 credits total 18 compulsory 12 optional

4 O.S.S.D Compulsory Credits (18) Students must earn the following compulsory credits: 4 credits in English (1 credit per grade) 1 credit in French as a second language 3 credits in Mathematics (at least 1 credit in Gr. 11 or 12) 2 credits in Science 1 credit in Canadian history 1 credit in Canadian geography 1 credit in the Arts 1 credit in Health and Physical Education.5 credit in Civics.5 credit Career Studies plus

5 3 Remaining Compulsory Credits 1 additional credit in English, or a third language, or social sciences and the humanities, Canadian and world studies, or guidance and career education, or cooperative education; or classical or international language or French as a second language 1 additional credit in health and physical education, or the arts, or business studies, or cooperative education; or French as a second language 1 additional credit in science (Grade 11 or 12) or technological education (Grades 9-12), or cooperative education; or French as a second language Students also complete an additional 12 optional/elective credits

9 Academic Planning- S5 Guidance DESIGN THE LIFE YOU WANT (Sir Ken Robinson) Reflection: Aptitudes, Passions, Values Personal Rankings: Indicators based on personal priorities; Research based on indicators- for Best Fit Postsecondary Plan (competitive, target, back-up) Create Year Plan with all application pieces, deadlines for the year

10 S5 Guidance First term of S5 we spent in self-assessment/reflection and researching post-secondary programs for BEST FIT. Students create a list of schools & programs (competitive, target, back-up) that are a fit for their aptitudes, passions, priorities and values This allows them to know all pre-requisite courses are required for schools/ programs. Double check the pre-requisite courses for all programs of interest on e-info Courses for S6 must include ENG4U and all pre-requisite courses All courses taken should match aptitudes, passions and planned post-secondary path

11 S5 School Year 7 courses (6 full credits, 1 non-credit Guidance Seminar) Compulsory ENG3UE/P; MHF4UE/P; PPL3OE; S5 Guidance Electives A minimum of 4 additional credit courses from at least two of the following four subject groupings: the Arts; Canadian and World Studies/Social Sciences & Humanities; Languages; Mathematics; Sciences and Technology

12 Advanced Placement Options (AP) Streamed AP Courses students MUST write AP exam Enriched curriculum to prepare students to write AP exam in May 2019 Accelerated and additional content Pre-AP Functions MHF4UP no AP exam (preparation for AP Calculus in S6) AP English (ENG 3UP) (English Language and Composition) AP Chemistry (SCH 4UP) AP Statistics (MDM 4UP) (typically taken in S6) AP Challenge and Change in Society (HSB 4UP) -- AP Capstone Seminar option (taken as additional credit)

13 Advanced Placement Options (AP) Non-Streamed AP Courses students will choose whether they write the AP exam. Enriched curriculum to prepare students to write AP exam in May 2019 Accelerated and additional content Computer Science (ICS 3UN or ICS 4UN) World History Since the Fifteenth Century (CHY 4UN) Canadian and World Issues (CGW 4UN) Analysing Current Economic Issues (CIA 4UN)

14 Advanced Placement Options Must submit TWO Forms (1) Application for AP Preparation (2) course verification form AP Form must be signed by parents(signature required) See mark criteria in order to take AP Students may sign up for AP if a little below mark criteria (the decision is made based on your results at year end) Best to sign up now. You will be notified if your final mark does not meet the criteria and placed in the non-ap stream

15 UTS Capstone Option S5 Capstone Seminar Pilot Program The UTS Capstone Program provides a cross-curricular and interdisciplinary focus to learning as students explore and investigate academic and real-world topics from multiple perspectives. Emphasis will be placed on supporting the growth and development of 21st century competencies like collaborative team work, independent research and communication. Opportunity to build on interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary learning by taking an additional half credit (UTS Capstone Seminar Part 1) or full credit (AP Capstone Seminar) Students will have the opportunity to continue their work in S6 as they create a significant, meaningful piece of work of their choosing either through the UTS Capstone Seminar Part 2, or the AP Capstone Research course.

16 AP Capstone AP CAPSTONE DIPLOMA 4 AP COURSES + EXAMS (minimum score of 3 on each) + CAPSTONE AP CAPSTONE = (1) AP Seminar Year 1 (HSB4U) (2) AP Research Year 2 (not credit course) S5 students may select Year 1 AP Seminar to get an AP Credit (HSB4U) if wish opportunity for interdisciplinary experience to prepare for interdisciplinary programs (e.g., SASAH; Trinity 1) MUST submit THREE FORMS (1) AP form signed by parents (to be approved by VP) (2) Course Verification form printed out and signed (3) Course Increase form (to be approved by VP)

17 Reaching Ahead - Grade 12 Courses Part of course selection options Check prerequisites closely - handbook Be careful to maintain course load balance All grade 12 level courses (4U/4M level) taken at any time will be submitted for postsecondary admissions as will all grade 11 level courses (3M/3U/3O)

18 Postsecondary Information Start to research the following: Schools and Programs of best fit Prerequisites Requirements - Grades, SAT/ACT, Supplementals Students create a timeline from Jan Grade 11 - Jan Grade 12 Students will begin thinking in M4 Careers and have one class a week to do this in S5 Guidance. 19 US/UK Universities PSAT was written by some students in October of grade 10, another opportunity in grade 11 SAT or ACT results are mandatory part of American applications UK schools may have specific testing requirements (BMAT, UKCAT, LNAT) Plan to write first time in spring of grade 11 Speak to counsellor for more information Need to consider how summer will be used as there is a greater emphasis on enrichment and experiential activities,

22 Course Selection Process All students have had a class course selection information session with a counsellor Online Course Selection System opened: January 19 th Online verification form due by Thursday January 26th - Students are to print their online choices and return it with the worksheet to Ms. West Timetable conflicts followed up on by counsellors: April
