4 Student-athlete challenges Student-athletes daily living can be complicated and chaotic. Classes, clubs, practices, games, homework, tournaments produce mental and physical wear and tear. Commitment to school sports involve conflicts with school and academic hours. The expectations that others have about their academic and athletic performance can feel overwhelming / can cause stress. Mastering skills based on their developmental stage can be challenging in itself.

6 How can parents impact studentathlete performance? Parents are mainly responsible for the development and consequences of psychosocial and physical development through sport practice. Parents can influence in the athletes selfperception of their performance/abilities, as well as the emotional and affective consequences of sport practice.
7 How can parents impact studentathlete performance? The vocabulary and advice given to studentathletes by parents to describe performance and ability is and will impact psychological and emotional development (all the way through adulthood). - Self-esteem - Self-concept
8 How parents can negatively affect student-athletes Embarrassment Distraction Pressure Poor Sportsmanship Creating a bad model Make it tougher for the coach to focus Take the fun out of the game

11 Tools to effectively manage student-athlete performance Encourage direct and effective communication. Encourage a clear and effective communication with the team coach. Evaluate vocabulary content used (positive). Respect the rhythm, time, and space within student-athlete development. Help to establish balance in the activities expected of their developmental stage. Identify when to ask for help (if needed)
12 Conclusion Parents: Model how to follow for adequate emotional management. Play a fundamental role in the athletic development of their children. Transmit beliefs and values If you can identify your own style of parenting, it will help you to know how to help your own. Build bridges of communication Are responsible for the main goal: FUN.
13 Interscholastic Athletics at Baldwin Mission- To promote a learning athletic cocurricular experience for our students through the proper teaching of skills, technique, tactics while emphasizing sportsmanship, commitment, hard work, sacrifice and character.
14 Interscholastic Athletics at Baldwin Baldwin participates in 2 different leagues: PRHSAA & LAMEPI PRHSAA compete grades 7-12 in these disciplines: Volleyball, Soccer, Golf, Cross Country, Basketball, Swimming, Tennis, Baseball, Softball, Indoor Soccer & Track & Field. Baldwin will offer the opportunity to play, if enough students show interest, we will sponsor a team. LAMEPI compete in grades 4-6 in the following disciplines: Volleyball, Cross Country, tennis, Flag Football, Soccer, Swimming, Baseball, Basketball, Track & Field & Bowling. Baldwin will offer the opportunity to play, if enough students show interest, we will sponsor a team. Each league operates independently They both have rules, policies on eligibility, competition, post season, facilities, etc.
15 How do these teams work? We have a tryout system in which teams are selected based on experience, ability, attitude and effort. Teams practice for about 2 weeks before starting the season. In the LAMEPI league there are participation rules, in the PRHSAA there are not. The team members have to complete their season before joining another team in another season. When tryouts occur that a coach has to make cuts- evaluation sheets are filled out and once the decision is made by the coach, he/she consults with AD to ascertain through a rubric, why that player was selected or not selected.

21 Transfer Students Any student that enrolls in Baldwin in 10th, 11 th or 12 th grade must file a waiver of ineligibility form through the Athletic Office The form has 3 pages and has to be signed by parents, incoming principal and transferring Administrator and Athletic Director. Any new students in those grades must see AD ASAP to fill out the paperwork. There are 6 reasons to have the waiver approved: The student must transfer because the school does not have th grade There is a legal change of residence with supporting evidence The parent or legal guardian is employed full-time by the receiving school The student must transfer because the parent or legal guardian has received or has been denied military benefits The student is part of an exchange program The student left PR and is coming back to the same school he/she left.
22 1. Support your student-athlete's efforts to success. 2. Work to promote a positive environment that is conducive to the development of your student-athlete. 3. Treat all coaching personnel with courtesy and respect. 4. Assure that your student-athlete will attend all scheduled practices and athletic contests, once the team has been selected. 5. Promote and model mature and sportsmanlike behavior at all athletic contests.
23 Promote the health and safety of student athletes at all times. 2. Be a model for appropriate language, sportsmanship, and behavior at all times. 3. Establish time demands that acknowledge the primary importance of each student-athlete's responsibilities. 4. Promote among athletes and coaches a solid sense of team membership. 5. Be available to meet with parents at times that are mutually convenient and in alignment with the athletic department's parent/coach guidelines. 6. Teach proper techniques and skills for the developmental age of each team. 7. Adhere to all Baldwin, PRHSAA and LAMEPI policies at all times.
24 Communication a parent/guardian should expect from a coach: 1. The expectations the coach has for your child as well as the players on the team. 2. Locations and times of all practices and games. 3. Team requirements. 4. Discipline that may result in the denial of your child's participation.
25 1. Situations involving the health of your child. 2. Ways to help your child improve. 3. Your child's attitude, work ethic, and eligibility. 4. Concerns about your child's behavior
26 1. Playing time of any student-athlete. 2. Team strategy, practice organization, or play calling. 3. Other student-athletes.
27 1. Before intervening, your child should speak to the coach about the issue. Empower your Student-Athlete to grow into a young adult. 2. Contact the coach to set up an appointment. If the coach can not be reached, contact the athletic director. He/she will assist you in arranging a meeting. 3. If a meeting with the coach did not provide a resolution for ALL parties involved, call to schedule an appointment with the athletic director to discuss the situation. The ***AD will only intervene if the issue has already been discussed with the coach. * Please do not confront a coach before or after a game or practice. Meetings of this nature normally do not assist in creating a resolution to the situation. 4. There are some items that may not have the result that you may be expecting. However, our aim is to serve the collective the best way we feel possible.
28 Tournaments- VOLUNTEERS!! People to work the concession, admission and ticket desk. During the tournament our coaches are either: coaching, taking score, setting up for the next match or cleaning up the areas. Games- FANS!!! People in the stands Cheering positively and helping make the School Spirit rise! School spirit is a reflection of students, parents and friends coming to games!

32 These experiences should be positive for the students first. Growth, learning and enjoyment are the cornerstones of our program. As the students progress through the levels of participation, so does the focus on competition- Mini, Youth, JV & Varsity. Thank you for your support! Without your help, we would not have the program. Our coaches will be available to speak to any parent that has specific questions about their program. ALWAYS REMEMBER GO BULLS!!!
