1 1 Dual Enrollment Testing Policies & Prerequisites Virginia Western Community College requires dual enrollment students to adhere to all college Admission policies. Students must show that they are college ready by meeting required scores in both English and Mathematics on the Virginia Placement Test (VPT) or an alternative VCCS approved assessment. Students taking the VPT on campus MUST provide their EMPLID and a photo ID when they register at the Testing Center. Dual-enrollment students will be required to complete ALL parts of the VPT or meet the criteria posted for alternative assessment. Students may combine assessments. Testing scores are valid for two years. The charts below show the admission criteria that students must meet to enroll in dual enrollment courses. Some courses may have additional pre- or co-requisites. The VWCC catalog is the official source for information relating to placement testing and course requirements. This chart is a guideline that may not represent the most current information found in our on-line catalog. Please refer to the on-line catalog when planning for testing or enrollment needs. RE-TESTS & SCORE VALIDITY 1. Virginia Placement Test (VPT) scores are valid for two years after the date of the test. 2. One retest is allowed within 12 months of the initial attempt. COURSES WITH MATHEMATICS PRE-REQUISITES and/or LIMITATIONS 1. Dual-enrollment students desiring to enroll in these courses must complete mathematics placement testing and demonstrate the required level of proficiency in order to enroll. 2. Please note that MTH 173, MTH 271, and PHY 201 carry a prerequisite that includes a college-level mathematics course. 3. Students who have completed the college-level mathematics course specified in the pre-requisite do not need to complete testing. Students who have not completed the college-level mathematics course specified in the pre-requisite must complete testing and receive the placement recommendation indicated in the chart in order to enroll.
3 4. Students with qualifying PSAT, SAT or ACT scores meet the MTE 1-9 math requirements. To enroll in Calculus (MTH 173), those students need to complete the Calculus portion of the VPT- Math. When administering the assessment for these students, select VPT Calc Only. Dual enrollment students must notify the testing center staff if they are selecting this option only. 5. PSAT/SAT/ACT scores cannot be used to allow enrollment in MTH 241, MTH 271 or PHY 201. Dual-enrollment students must have completed MTH 115, MTH 163, or MTH 166 or received a placement recommendation for MTH 271 to enroll in PHY 201. Dual-enrollment students must have completed MTH 163 or 166 or received a placement recommendation for MTH 271 in order to enroll in MTH 271 or MTH 241. COURSES WITH COLLEGE-LEVEL PRE-REQUISITES Students must complete specified college-level pre-requisites established by the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) before enrolling in these classes. Some of these courses also carry co-requisites. Co-requisites may be taken along with the specified class. COMPASS Testing Beginning in the academic year, Compass scores will be discontinued as a placement mechanism for VWCC applicants. Students who would like to have COMPASS scores considered for their Placement Recommendation that are transferring into VWCC s service area from other states or regions that still offer COMPASS testing, should contact VWCC s Student Services to determine if scores can be used for admission criteria. Scores are valid for two years from the testing date only. UPDATES: Please refer to the VWCC Dual Enrollment website for updates to this document. The guide can be found through the Virginia Placement Testing link. The official source of information for college admission requirements and class requirements is the VWCC on-line college catalog. 3 Revised: December 11, VWCC DE Course List and Admission Testing Policies & Prerequisites Dual Enrollment course that require ENG 111 and MTH 1 or higher for admission 1 ART HIS 101 History & Appreciation of Art I History of Western Civilization I 1 HIS 102 History of Western Civilization II 1 HIS 121 US History I 1 HIS 122 US History II
