I hope this newsletter finds you and your family doing well during this holiday season. It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of the first semester and that final exams are right around the corner. As usual, our students and staff have been busy this past semester. Our girls volleyball team and boys cross country teams won their respective district championships while our football team advanced to the second round of the playoffs. Our drama department recently performed a production of The Crucible and they are hard at work preparing for their upcoming musical, Anything Goes. Our band received a First Division Rating at their UIL Marching Contest in October and then qualified for the finals in the Area Marching Contest the following week. The choir program recently held their Madrigal Dinner and the students did an outstanding job. This is a great event that incorporates a fun atmosphere, along with good food and audience participation. Our band, orchestra, and choir programs are all preparing for their upcoming holiday concerts and I encourage everyone to attend these events as they are wonderful opportunities to hear our students perform and demonstrate their hard work and exceptional talents. 2 Lunch Performances Dancers Celebrate Culture Twenty-six dancers from Mrs. Curry s Dance II classes and eight dancers from Mrs. Curry IB World Dance Studies course recently demonstrated their dance skills and cultural appreciation at a lunchtime performance for all students. They celebrated the Indian culture with excerpts of the Garba Raas style of Indian Dance. The performances were choreographed by IB Dance students with Sazmin Momin as the lead student teacher. Sazmin created a PowerPoint presentation that explained the history, costumes and music used in the Garba Raas style of Indian Dance. The dancers wore traditional dupattas, used dandiya sticks as well as pots. Each month, the dance program will be introducing different cultures. December s performance will represent dances from the Philippines, China, South Pacific Islands and Japan. In June, fourteen art students from Klein Oak High School traveled through England, France, and Italy to study ancient architecture and art history. Here they are pictured in Capri, Italy. Connect to School Access You Child s Information Klein ISD has a new district application called Parent Connection. This application allows parents to access their child s information contained in the teacher s grade book. You will be able to view your child s grades, assignments, and attendance. You will also be able to set grade and/or attendance triggers to alert you via if a trigger is met. Klein s number one priority is security of your child s information data. Once you have created your account, you will need four pieces of information on your child to gain access to their records. The data pieces are: Klein student ID number see your child s schedule or prior report card Student date of birth Student social security number or the state issued number if you did not provide the ssn when registering your child see your campus registrar for the state number Student Food Pin number your child will have this number given to him/her To begin, go to the campus website and click on the link to access Parent Connection. Open the documents and read the instructions prior to creating your account. If you have any questions when creating your account or using the application, please call Sharon Merkt at or by at parentconnect@kleinisd.net. None of the above mentioned secure data will be given to you over the phone or . Parent Connection is another tool that will foster collaboration between teacher and parent to help your child learn more, grow more and take that next step toward realizing their full potential.

3 IB Program at KOHS Learning Opportunity Invitation In its quest to meet the educational needs of every child, the Klein Independent School District offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB) at Klein Oak High School. The IB program is a rigorous course of study, designed to meet the needs of highly self-motivated students while promoting international understanding. This comprehensive program is recognized worldwide for its depth and consistency. Students enrolled in the program take courses in six academic areas, along with a unique course entitled Theory of Knowledge. Additionally, each student is required to participate in 150 hours of community service and to complete a 4000-word extended essay. Students who complete this program prepare not only for success in college, but for success in life. Students gain a broader world view, follow in-depth approaches to the academic disciplines, and develop time management, problem-solving, research, and organizational skills that will remain with them long after the IB experience is over. Universities throughout the United States offer college credit to IB graduates. The State of Texas, recognizing the strength of the IB Diploma Program, automatically grants a minimum of 24 college credit hours to any public university to all high school graduates who earn the IB Diploma. All interested ninth or tenth grade students and their parents are invited to attend one of the two informational meetings to be held in the KOHS Commons on Jan. 27th and Feb. 3rd at 7:00pm. Klein Oak Junior Briana Potter at the voting polls. A group of seven club members participated in handing out campaign literature to voters in the northern part of Texas s 126th State House district. The outing gave the students a first-hand look at the American political process as well as gave them an opportunity to develop their interpersonal skills. For many of the students, it was their first time to participate in America s democracy. Patricia has proven to be a conservative leader in Austin, noted club president Brenton Cooper. Her views on the economy and private property rights are stances that we can trust she will stand up for. Volunteering was fun. It was a great experience getting to talk to all different kinds of people, said club member Briana Potter, a Junior at Klein Oak. Students Chosen for Program Leadership Development Awareness Klein Oak High School juniors Alexia Alvarez and Samantha Beasley have been selected by Leadership North Houston and Lone Star College System to represent their school in Leadership High School - North Houston, a leadership development and diversity awareness program in the North Houston Region. They will participate in numerous sessions, focusing on topics such as: education, local and state government, health and human services, cultural diversity and the arts. Leadership High School provides a unique opportunity to help prepare area youth for responsible citizenship while they develop crucial leadership skills. Alvarez and Beasley will attend Leadership Skills Retreat and a certificate ceremony in April There s Pride And Then There s Panther Pride!

5 Report Card Reminder We would like to remind you of the report card procedures at Klein Oak High School. As a general rule, report cards are distributed to students within one week of the conclusion of a grading period, which is usually on a Friday. Commended Students Awarded National Merit Scholarship Program Principal Ron Webster announced that 13 Klein Oak students have been named as Commended in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students have demonstrated outstanding academic potential by their strong performance in their highly competitive programs and represent some of the most academically talented students in the country. Senior Gold Card Members Receive Tickets for Upcoming Events Any Klein resident 65 years or older is entitled to two (2) free general admission tickets to Klein ISD athletic or theatrical events that are opened to the public. We recommend you call the school in advance to check on the availability of seats. Checking early is especially important for the musical dramas presented in the spring. Tickets must be obtained prior to the events during normal business hours from the Klein Oak Athletic office: or the Drama Department: Klein Education Foundation Award Student Wins for Outstanding Writing One way to efficiently access tickets is with the Senior Citizen Gold Card. You can make application on Web site at aspx?name=cr.sr.form to receive your card in the mail. If you prefer you may visit the tax office or community relations department at the KISD central office at 7200 Spring Cypress to make application. Klein ISD also encourages you to register for its daily news when you apply for the Gold Card. 7 KO Cosmotology Helps Matter of Trust Hair Mats Program Student Named Semifinalist National Achievement Schlolarship Award Principal Ron Webster announced that Wyeisha McDowell of Klein Oak High School has been named as semifinalist in the 2011 National Achievement Scholarship Program, an academic competition for Black American high school students. McDowell demonstrated outstanding academic potential by their strong performance in their highly competitive programs. It is from the semifinalist groups that all National Merit Scholarship winners will be chosen.. Pictured Mr. Webster and Wyeisha McDowell. Empty Bowl Project Fundraiser for Food Bank Klein Oak Cosmetology students ship cut hair to Matter of Trust Hair Mats program. Matter of Trust is providing a safe, non-toxic, and effective way to participate in the Gulf Spill clean up. Hair is stuffed into recycled nylons called hair booms and mats. Hair absorbs the oil, thus making good use of recycled hair. Salons from all over the country have donated cut hair. For more information, go to SNAPP Volunteers Give Back Seniors Receive Service Hours for Helping The Klein Oak Art Club concluded its annual Empty Bowls Project on Tuesday, December 14th. Art Club treasurer, Jonnell Small, presented a $900 donation to the Houston Food Bank Director of Individual Giving, Lisa Garces. Art club members have been busy this year creating ceramic bowls that were sold to faculty and staff to raise funds for the food bank.
