5 Power Plates Virginia PTA s student recipe program to encourage healthy eating habits. Students can enter their original, healthy recipes in three easy steps: write down the recipe, fill out the Student Entry Form, and take a picture of the dish. For rules and entry form, go to Students in grades Pre-K to 12 can enter their recipes in five categories: Breakfast Lunch Snack Dinner entrée or side dish Dessert The top winners will be recognized at our Students Award Ceremony Luncheon To be held in Richmond on April 30,2017. 6 Virginia PTA Power Plates Program Official Rules RULES FOR PARTICIPATION: By entering the Virginia PTA Power Plates Program, entrants accept and agree to be bound by these Official Rules as well as the entry requirements. Any violation of these rules may, at Virginia PTA s discretion, result in disqualification. All decisions of the judges regarding this program are final and binding in all respects. 1. Eligibility. Students must participate through a local PTA/PTSA in good standing according to Virginia PTA SOP. Parent groups not affiliated with National PTA or Virginia PTA are not eligible to sponsor this program. A student may develop an entry in or outside of school. 2. Categories. There are five recipe categories breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner entree or side dish, and dessert. Students may enter the program in one or more categories. 3. Grade divisions. Students may enter in the appropriate division for their grade (Primary: Preschool Grade 2; Intermediate: Grades 3-5; Middle School: Grades 6-8; High School: Grades 9-12; Special Chef: All grades). See Special Chef for entry requirements. 4. How to enter. Entrants must submit their recipe, photo and entry form to Virginia PTA by . Each entry should be ed separately with the Students Name, Food Category and Division in the subject line of the . Entries should be ed to PowerPlates@vapta.org by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, February 24, Entry requirements. Each entry must be the original work of one student only. An adult may not alter the creative integrity of a student s recipe. Only one student may be recognized as the award recipient for each entry. Each entry must contain the following three items: ü ü ü A Virginia PTA Power Plates Program Student entry form with A title for the original recipe. A statement on what inspired the healthy recipe. Is it gluten-free, nut-free or lactose-free? What other healthy foods might be served with this recipe? It should be between one sentence and 100 words. A recipe typed on the provided entry form that is healthy according to the USDA nutrition guidance MyPlate at and contains An ingredient list. This should be in standard U. S. measurement volume and weight. Ingredients should be commonly available at retail stores. Use generic names, not brand names. Step-by-step preparation instructions, with cooking times, pan sizes, temperatures, and number of servings. A photograph under 2MB formatted as.jpg,.png or non-animated.gif. It should be a photograph of the food only. No person should appear in the photograph. 6. Winner selection and notification. Judging will be based on the following criteria: 50% healthy nutritional value of the recipe; 25% perceived taste; 15% creativity and originality; 10% student statement. Awards will be announced by mail, and/or telephone by April 7, Student finalists will be recognized at the Student Awards Ceremony on April 30, Ownership and license. Ownership in any submission shall remain the property of the entrant, but entry into this program constitutes entrant s irrevocable permission and consent that Virginia PTA may display, copy, reproduce, enhance, print, sublicense, publish, distribute and create derivative works for PTA purposes. Virginia PTA is not responsible for lost or damaged entries. Submission of entry into the Virginia PTA Power Plates Program constitutes acceptance of all rules and conditions. 8. Participating entities. This program is administered by the Virginia Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and PTA affiliates.

9 Virginia Science Olympiad (VASO) is a non-profit organization established to challenge kids in the area of Science. We, with the support of the Oak Hill PTA, will be organizing the Division A for grades 3-5. The test will be in April (official date and location to be announced). Registration cost is $30. Registration opens Thursday, December 15 at 7AM and closes January 8. We will notify you once registration is complete to coordinate event sign-up. 12 Oak Hill Coding Club Winter 2017 Sponsored by the Oak Hill PTA In Coding Club, you will learn to code your own interactive animations, stories and games using Scratch. Scratch is a fun and creative way to learn programming skills and computational thinking. If you re new to programming, we will teach you the basics; if you re an experienced coder, we ll teach you more advanced concepts. When you re coding with Scratch, the only limit is your imagination! Scratch is designed and maintained by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab. What will you create? 13 Sponsored by Oak Hill PTA Oak Hill Elementary Fairfax Collegiate After-School Classes Fairfax Collegiate and Oak Hill are partnering up to provide fun, exciting, and educational after-school classes to Oak Hill students. Classes are taught with curricula adapted from Fairfax Collegiate s highly successful summer program, with over 3500 students attending its Summer 2015 program. Instructors have authoritative knowledge of their subjects, as well as experience working with children. Small class sizes of 8-12 students, top of the line equipment, talented teachers, and a proven curriculum come together to create a great class where kids will have fun and learn! Location: Classes are held at Oak Hill Grades: Classes are for Grades 5-6 Time: Classes are 80 minutes long, and last from 3:40 pm to 5:00 pm. Price: $160 for PTA Pledge Members, $170 for non-pta Pledge Members. Advanced Debate Tuesdays, Jan 10 - Feb 28 This course is based on the Middle School Public Debate Program ( Students engage in debates which involve a wide variety of issues of public concern at the local, state, national, and global levels, as well as topics that are of direct relevance to students. Beginning Debate Thursdays, Jan 12 - Mar 2 This course introduces elementary students to parliamentary debate. Debate topics are both challenging and directly relevant to students. The rule structure is less rigid than standard parliamentary debate rules. Group exercises develop public speaking, critical reasoning, argument construction, rebuttal, and evidence presentation skills. Register today!
