2 Welcome and Introductions

3 Planning Committee Charge The charge of the South High School Planning Committee is to provide recommendations regarding the academic programming of a new South High School. To guide the recommendation, the Planning Committee will engage the community by hosting community engagement meetings, presenting information in a concise, readable format, and ssoliciting the community s feedback.

4 Purpose: Information Sharing and Community Input on the academic programming of the South HS 3

5 District Needs Geographical access and equity to programming. No academic magnets high school programs in South Austin. IB at Anderson, Fine Arts Academy at McCallum, and Liberal Arts and Science Magnet are all located in North Austin. Projected growth in student enrollment in South Austin adds potential for overcrowding in existing South high schools. 4

6 Strategic Plan and Board Priority Alignment Goal 3: All students will graduate ready for college, career, and life in a globally competitive economy. - Strategy 1: Provide a high-quality, well-rounded educational experience to all students that is rigorous, culturally relevant, healthful, and engaging. Key Action 1.15: Determine advanced academic courses to be offered at every school, create coherent sequences of course offerings, and expand opportunities for dual credit and advanced placement. Key Action 1.11: Provide more opportunities for students to participate in enrichment programs such as career interest, technology, athletics, and languages other than English. 5

10 Academic Scenario 1: International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme International Standards Available to 11 th and 12 th grade students Emphasizes 6 advanced studies courses in language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, mathematics and computer science, the arts, and experimental sciences. In-depth independent research Community service requirement Graduate with IB Diploma or IB certificate depending on course work completed and IB test performance. 9

11 Academic Scenario 2: International Baccalaureate Career-related Certificate (IBCC) Requires the IB Diploma Programme at the campus (scenario 1). Available to 11 th and 12 th grade students 2 advanced studies IB courses relevant to a career-related field of study in addition to second language studies Approaches to learning course emphasizes critical and ethical thinking critically and effective communication Community service requirement Career-related ethical issue reflective research project Graduate with IB career-related certificate depending on course work completed and IB test performance. 10

12 Academic Scenario 3: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) with Project Lead the Way Emphasizes critical connections between Sceince, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) principles and solving the real challenges in our communities and the world. Available to 9 th -12 th grade students Emphasizes sequence of 4 courses in one of the following: - Pathway to Engineering - Biomedical Sciences Opportunities for partnerships, internships, and mentorships with the local technology and medical arts industries College-level recognition for select courses if campus is certified by Project Lead the Way 11

13 Academic Scenario 4: Early College High School (ECHS) Emphasis is placed on college-readiness and college-going Available to 9 th -12 th grade students Students have the opportunity to complete an Associate s degree or up to 2 years of transferable college credit Students have the opportunity to earn an industry credential Partnership between school district and local college or university 12
