1 ATHLETICS AUSTRALIA SELECTION POLICY IAAF WORLD RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS NASSAU, BAHAMAS 22 nd 23 rd April 2017 This document sets out the basis on which Athletics Australia will select the Australian Team for the IAAF World Relay Championships in Nassau, Bahamas on 22 nd and 23 rd April Aims The aim of Athletics Australia s Selection Policy for the World Relay Championships is to nominate a quality team to represent Australia. The policy is aligned with the Athletics Australia Strategic Plan ( ) and with the Australian Institute of Sport Winning Edge Program. Specifically the policy aims to facilitate the following outcomes: Selecting teams for the 4x100m and 4x400m (men and women) with the realistic potential to automatically qualify for the 2017 IAAF World Championships. Providing major Championships experience to potential future Olympic and World Championships top eight finishers. Providing major Championships experience to potential future Commonwealth Games gold medal winners. 2 Standards, criteria and athlete numbers The IAAF has set qualification standards for the 4x100m and 4x400m that are listed in Appendix 1. These standards target an ideal number of approximately 22 teams to qualify. The remaining teams (up to 24) will be determined through the IAAF World Lists in the qualification period 1 January 2016 to 3 April Athletics Australia may select sprint relay teams of up to 6 athletes for each of the men s and women s 4x100m and 4x400m events. 2.2 Athletics Australia may select endurance relay teams of up to 6 athletes, one men s team and one women s team, to compete in the 4x800m relay. Page 1 Version /12/16

2 2.3 Athletes from the 4x400m and 4x800m relay teams may be called upon to compete in the mixed 4x400m relay. 2.4 The selection of a team for any of the relay events is a discretionary matter for the Selectors to consider taking into account the form and fitness of the pool of athletes available for selection. 2.5 To be nominated athletes must meet the Athlete Eligibility Criteria (see Section 4). 3 Selection All selections are at the discretion of the Selectors. This discretion is absolute, and it need not be exercised. 3.1 Athletics Australia may enter teams for men and women in the 4x100m, 4x400m, 4x800m and mixed 4x400m relay. 3.2 There will be no 4x200m relay team selected due to the scheduling of events and the stated aim in section 1 to qualify teams for the 2017 IAAF World Championships. 3.3 The IAAF World Relay Teams will consist of up to six athletes per relay discipline. 3.4 Selections for the 4x100m a) The first three eligible athletes in the Australian Athletics Championships 100m will be automatically selected. b) Further selections are at the absolute discretion of the Selectors. 3.5 Selections for the 4x400m a) The first three eligible athletes in the Australian Athletics Championships 400m will be automatically selected. b) Further selections are at the absolute discretion of the Selectors 3.6 Selections for the 4x800m a) There is no automatic selection for the 4x800m. All selections are at the absolute discretion of the Selectors. 3.7 Selections for the mixed 4x400m a) The team members will be drawn from the 4x400m and 4x800m relay squads. 3.8 The IAAF World Relay Team members will be nominated to create the most competitive possible team based on applicable relay skills, team cohesiveness and, for the 4x100m and 4x400m, compliance with the Athletics Australia Relay program. Results in individual events (e.g. 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m), while important, will not be the sole criteria for nomination to the relay teams. Particular note will be taken of performances achieved in the Athletics Australia domestic season (see appendix 2). 3.9 In exercising their discretion in relation to any athlete under consideration for the Team the Selectors will consider and take into account the recommendation of the High Page 2 Version /12/16
