May June 2017 Issue 70 ESC Graduation The Auglaize County ESC 2017 graduation was held on Friday, May 19 at the Wapakoneta High School Performing Arts Center. Shawn Brown, Superintendent, opened the ceremony with welcoming remarks to the graduates and their family and friends, district superintendents, principals, special education directors, Auglaize County ESC Board members and faculty. Amy Becher, ESC Director of Special Education, shared welcoming comments to everyone in attendance, along with gratitude to the staff at Wapakoneta High School for the use of the Performing Arts Center; Eric Brenner, ESC Technology Director; teachers and faculty; and families of the graduates. The Wapakoneta High School Symphonic Choir performed Just Another Hour and The Awakening. Special recognition went out to Megan Grumblis, a 2017 graduate who will continue into the ESC Transition Program. Quinten Vandemark, a 2011 graduate of Auglaize County ESC, was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Quinten is an inspirational role model to his peers and has shown great success in his post-graduate life. Our 2017 graduates are (from left): Madison Ann Luck from New Knoxville, Austin Jerome Stephens from Saint Marys, David Alan Thieman from New Bremen, Logan Cole Stechman from Wapakoneta, Lorenzo Miguel Conchu Aganon from Minster, and Jonathon Tyler Lucia from Wapakoneta. 2 Auglaize County Educational Service Center Prom On May 8, five of our ESC classes went to prom, which was hosted by Indian Lake and held at the Indian Lake High School. The theme for prom was Meet Me in Wonderland. Students enjoyed dancing, talking to their friends, and lunch. One of our students, JT Lucia, was crowned prom king. Schools from the SST6 region that have students in grades high school through transition were invited. Thank you, Indian Lake, for the wonderful event and memories! Page 2

Auglaize/Mercer County Drug Symposium: Dr. Gill, along with several local partners, held a drug symposium at Wright State Lake Campus on April 8, The symposium was a collaborative effort to bring awareness on the drug epidemic in our community. Participants were given updates on current trends from local law enforcement and health care/mental health professionals. Kelli Tebbe from our ESC spoke and shared how the schools in Auglaize County are working to combat this epidemic. Waynesfield-Goshen Teachers in Kahoots: The teachers at Waynesfield-Goshen schools participated in gifted professional development to discuss some of the differences between creative, high ability, and gifted learners. Did you know High ability students enjoy the company of same age peers while gifted students prefer intellectual peers regardless of age? Creative thinkers enjoy playing with new concepts while gifted learners tend to know concept without much effort? Ideas may seem jumbled for creative thinkers while high ability learners comprehend at high levels? When it comes to information, high ability learners absorb it, gifted learners manipulate it, and creative thinkers improvise? This, and much more, was discussed with the teachers using the online tool Kahoot.It! Page 3

EQ Educator Certification July 19 20, 2017 Columbus, Ohio Classroom teachers, counselors, and volunteers learn to facilitate social-emotional learning (SEL) lessons. Participants walk away with a clear process for SEL instruction, an understanding of Six Seconds model and approach, plus resources & curriculum for 4-8 months of teaching. While most educators see the value in social-emotional learning, most schools do not have a systematic, comprehensive, developmental approach to these essential skills.
