3 Introduction At Plymouth Middle School (PMS) students may choose to participate in a variety of extra curricular activities including programs in athletics, fine arts, service and academics. These activities provide excellent experience in learning teamwork, leadership development, social growth, team spirit and respect for others. We invite you to encourage your student to participate in as many activities as their abilities and time allow. We try to provide a place on a team for all students who want to play. Occasionally, due to facility or coaching shortages, we may not always be able to accommodate all students. With the opportunity to participate in school activities comes the responsibility of behaving appropriately while involved in them. PMS students are expected to behave in a respectful and responsible manner toward their teammates, school staff and coaches. Students need to act appropriately while in the locker room, during practice and games, on the activity buses and anytime they represent PMS at any event. School equipment and personal property of others are to be treated with respect. Academic Eligibility Prior to students participating in an activity, grades will be checked from the previous term. Students are expected to have passing grades in all classes to be eligible to participate in any activity, but will be allowed one failing grade. Students failing more than one class, in the term immediately before the season, will not be allowed to participate. During the season, students need to be passing all classes and will be expected to turn in weekly progress reports to their coaches every Wednesday. Any participant that has a failing grade will be allowed to practice with their team, but they will not dress in uniform or participate in any contests until they are passing all classes. Activity Bus Activity buses are provided for students who participate in after school activities. Buses depart from the front door at 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Routes are posted in the front hall. All activity routes are planned to provide transportation within a reasonable distance of a student s home. Students who live in the Robbinsdale Middle School (RMS) attendance area can ride a 4:45 p.m. transfer bus to Cooper High School (CHS) for the high school activity bus at 5:10 p.m. Students are to behave in a respectful and responsible manner on activity buses or the following will happen: 1st bus referral: Warning 2nd bus referral: Student is suspended from riding the activity bus for the remainder of the season. Students not riding the activity bus must be picked up right after practices or games. They are not allowed to wait for long periods of time because there is no hallway supervision available after hours. Failure to make arrangements for pick up may result in disciplinary action or loss of the student s place on the team. 2
4 Activities for There are four components to the activity program at PMS: 1. Interscholastic Athletics These sports are offered for 7th and 8th graders Monday through Thursday. If there is any extra space for students on the team, 6th graders will have the opportunity to join. The sports offered are: boys soccer, girls volleyball, boys wrestling, boys and girls basketball and boys and girls track. 2. Armstrong High School Cooperative Athletics 7th and 8th graders can participate on select Armstrong teams. These will be lower-level skilled sports that give students the high school sports experience. This year, those sports will include: girls soccer, girls and boys tennis, girls and boys swimming and girls and boys cross country. Students who play on an Armstrong team can ride a shuttle from PMS at 3:00 p.m. to the practice lo cation. Students can then take home the activity bus from AHS at 5:10 p.m. The fee for these sports will be the same as the athletics offered at PMS. All 7th and 8th graders can also try out for Armstrong s varsity teams. If they make the varsity team, they would need to pay the high school fee and abide by AHS and MSHSL rules. Any PMS student who lives in the CHS attendance area can join the CHS Cooperative teams as long as they can provide a ride to CHS after school Please check with CHS for sports offered. 3. Intramural Athletics Only 6th graders can participate in the intramural program, which will meet twice a week for 8 weeks. Offerings will be determined by student interest, starting in the fall. 4. Fine Arts Activities These activities are open to all students, and include: National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), Student Council, Chess Club, a Fall Musical, Yearbook, and Newspaper. Athletic Fees The School Board requires an activity fee to help offset part of the cost of athletics. The fee is $46 for all middle school sports. Other activities and clubs, arts groups and service groups may have various fees of a reasonable amount. Families have a yearly district maximum of $700. Once that amount has been reached for the family, no further fees will be charged for the school year. Students who receive reduced lunches will pay half of the activity fees, while students who receive free lunches will not pay any activity fee. Students who have paid the fee and subsequently withdraw may apply for a refund. However, refunds are not given after the first contest in a sport. Uniforms not returned must be paid for by the student. 3

16 Other Guidelines Students need to report to their activity by 3:00 p.m. Students who are not in an activity or students that are after school without permission will be asked to go to the waiting room to wait for the 4:30 p.m. activity buses. The first such violation will result in a meeting with a principal and a letter sent home to parents. A second violation will result in the student meeting with a principal, a letter sent home and the student s after school privileges being removed for a length of time up to the remainder of the school year. Any additional days that a student stays after school will result in an in-school suspension. Students that need to stay after school to wait for a ride must receive permission to do so ahead of time and wait in the waiting room for their ride. Students staying after school to work with staff must have that arranged ahead of time and report to their room by 3:00 p.m. Students who wish to attend home games must either be a sibling of a participant or be supervised by a guardian. This applies to both indoor and outdoor home games. Students are allowed to try out for high school varsity teams. Students that participate on high school teams cannot leave school early except for a unique situation. Students must have their own transportation to the high schools. Eligibility requirements are the same as the high schools, passing 80% of the student s classes. Students that participate on any high school team must have a physical exam that is dated within the last three years of the beginning of the sport. 18
