3 Tips for a Successful Journey through Freshman Year Get to your classes on time. Bring notebooks and books to class. Take notes. Listen carefully to directions. Ask questions. If you don t understand something chances are others in the class don t understand either. Join in the class discussions. Use an assignment notebook (agenda/planner) to organize and keep up with assignments. Meet assignment deadlines. Proofread, correct, and rewrite your written work. Study for tests and quizzes. Stay after school for extra help with teachers, peer-tutors, or an individual study group. Utilize the Media Center 1

H Honors 1.05 CB College Bridge 1.07 AP Advanced Placement 1.07 All other courses receive a weight of 1.0 Honor Roll Requirements The Honor Roll is calculated at the end of each quarter. Honor Roll with Distinction - A student must have an overall average of 90 percent or above in all academic areas, including physical education. 10 Resume A resume is a document containing a summary or listing of what a person has accomplished thus far. It is a valuable tool that can be used when completing college and employment applications. Your resume is a reflection of you and who you are. Be sure it is neat, error free and printed on nice paper. Have a parent, teacher, or counselor check it for you. Below is a sample resume Taylor A. Colleges are interested in the way you spend your extra time. November & December Find out how many credits and courses you need to graduate from high school. Meet with your guidance counselor to create a four-year plan that includes college preparation. January & February Meet with your high school guidance counselor to: Review your first semester grades. Learn which Regents Exams you need to take in June. March & April Take a virtual tour or visit a college campus. Research and apply for summer programs and internships. Pay attention to program deadlines so you don t miss out on any valuable opportunities. May & June Study for your Regents and final exams. Check with your high school guidance counselor and teachers to see if they know of any summer jobs or educational summer programs that suit your interests. Apply for working papers in your high school guidance office. Meet with your high school guidance counselor to review how you did this year, how you might improve, and plan what classes you should take next year. 9
12 Marlboro High School Countdown to College Checklist Grade 9 Less Than Four Years to Get Ready for College Take the most challenging coursework available. Find out what high school courses may help you gain college acceptance to certain colleges or career fields. Start clubs and activities at Marlboro High School in your areas of interest. Explore volunteer opportunities at Marlboro High School and in the community. Build relationships with peers, teachers, coaches and your principal. Develop good study habits. Job shadow or participate in a career day. Think about jobs your parents and other adults you know have. Ask them what a typical work day is like. Does this sound interesting to you? Begin constructing a resume. Begin to discuss college plans with your parents/guardians and teachers. Look at a college catalog. Does the school offer programs and courses that look interesting to you? Have your guidance counselor explain SAT preparation to you. 10

14 PLANNING AHEAD... It is recommended that students take the PSAT. THE PSAT What is the PSAT?... Preliminary Scholastic Achievement Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. (PSAT/NMSQT) The PSAT is a standardized test that provides first hand practice for the SAT and measures the reading, math, and writing skills needed for college. Why take it?. It is great practice for the SAT. As a junior you can become eligible for the National Merit Scholarships and you can assess your skills in the areas of evidence based reading and writing, and math. Additionally you can compare your scores with other students who also took the PSAT. How long is it?. 2 hours and 45 minutes. When can you take it?. The PSAT is offered in October. For more information regarding the PSAT please visit 12
15 Glossary PSAT: The Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a co-sponsored program by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). It s a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT. It also gives you a chance to enter National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) scholarship programs. The PSAT/NMSQT measures evidenced-based reading and writing, and math problem-solving skills. SAT: The SAT is a three-hour test that measures evidence-based reading and writing, and math problem-solving skills. There is also a fifty minute optional essay component to the test which may be required by some colleges/universities. This test focuses on the knowledge, skills, and understandings that research has identified as most important for college and career readiness and success. Many colleges and universities use the SAT as one indicator for college admissions. SAT scores are compared with the scores of other applicants and can be used as a basis for awarding merit-based financial aid. SAT SUBJECT TESTS: Subject Tests are hour-long, content-based tests that allow you to showcase achievement in specific subject areas where you excel. These are the only national admission tests where you choose the tests that best showcase your achievements and interests. The 20 Subject Tests include: Literature, U.S. History, World History, Math Level I, Math Level II, Biology E/M, Chemistry, Physics, French, French with Listening, German, German with Listening, Spanish, Spanish with Listening, Modern Hebrew, Italian, Latin, Japanese with Listening, Korean with Listening and Chinese with Listening. ACT: The ACT is a college entrance exam that assesses high school student s general education development and their ability to complete college-level work. The multiple-choice tests cover four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science. The Writing Test, which is optional, measures skill in planning and writing a short essay. FAFSA: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the first step in the financial aid process. You use it to apply for federal student financial aid, such as grants, loans, and workstudy. In addition, most states and schools use information from the FAFSA to award nonfederal aid. 13
