1 The Board of School Directors of the Ephrata Area School District, Ephrata PA, met in regular session on Monday, November 15, 2010 in the District Office Board Room, 803 Oak Blvd., Ephrata, Pennsylvania. Stayer called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M. MOMENT OF SILENT MEDITATION AND PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE President Stayer asked for a moment of silent meditation, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. STUDENTS PRESENTATION Mrs. Eby asked the Board and anyone who was interested to go with her to the TV studio for a tour. After they returned Sarah Quigg and FFA students presented a slide show of their trip to the national conference. Jane Englert showed a video of a project being done by High Chemistry students. The students are making videos for a Chemical Heritage Foundation video competition. 1

He opened the meeting to questions or comments from visitors for any item on the agenda except personnel items that are never discussed at public meetings. None at this time. Miller No Action Items. SUPERINTENDENT REQUEST FOR ACTION Gerald B. Rosati A. Authority Member The Superintendent respectfully requests the Ephrata Area Board of School Directors to approve the appointment of David Sturtevant to the Ephrata Union School Authority for a five-year term beginning in December 2010 through November Background Information Prior to the Unit Debt Act, the school districts were only able to issue general obligation bonds through an Authority that was created by the school districts. The Ephrata Area School District has chosen to continue the Authority in the event that legislation changes and requires us to have an authority. There are costs involved in the startup of an Authority. ----SECTION 3 INFORMATION ITEMS---- I. Personnel Committee Judy S. REPORT OF STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE Anna Martin Akron Elementary celebrated apples in October. The school was decorated with apple themes and many students wore special apple-themed hats that they made. The first annual Fun Run took place at the Middle School track with nearly 200 Kindergarten through 4 th Grade students participating. The High School Student Council hosted their Powder Puff football game in early November. Donations were given to Mr. Bezler s family. Proceeds from the snack bar were given to Justin Eberly, a High School student who was injured in a car accident. II. REPORT OF LANCASTER COUNTY CAREER & TECHNOLOGY CENTER Jenny L. Miller A poll was taken of CTC students regarding the referral process used by the CTC. 5

6 The CTC feasibility study is complete. Reports/presentations are available for sending schools upon request. III. IV. REPORT OF LANCASTER-LEBANON IU13 Neal D. Reichard IU 13 is instituting cost saving measures in several programs. A booklet is available that lists the measures. Four initiatives are being researched or implemented: launching a Lancaster/Lebanon virtual school, a transportation feasibility study, special education legal consortium, and a common calendar. The holiday bazaar will be held in December where student-made products will be sold. REPORT OF PSBA REGION 9 LEGISLATIVE REPRESENTATIVE Glenn R. Martin Discussion was held about legislative platform topics. PSBA prepared a cyber/charter school report, which is available on their website. Members are being sought for PSBA committees. V. REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT The building principals will present their building goals at the conclusion of this meeting. SECTION 6 MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS & ADJOURNMENT I. COMMENTS/QUESTIONS FROM VISITORS A. Visitors may make comments or raise questions. NOTE: Personnel matters are never discussed at public meetings. B. Citizens desiring consideration of our action on a topic not included on the agenda may make a written request to the board president or superintendent at least five (5) days before the regular public board meeting.
