APPROVAL OF MINUTES: A motion was made by Joan Piroch, seconded by Philip Schneider to accept the July 14, 2004 minutes as ed. The motion passed. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORT: The Senate Executive Committee met with the Provost on Monday, August 30, The meeting was very productive. Topics discussed included updates on the various ad hoc committees and taskforces. Since only an incomplete report could be made at this time, Dave Evans stated that a complete report on the status of the ad hoc committees and taskforces will be made later when possible. Senators are welcome to check with Evans about any pet projects that they are concerned with and he will attempt to give a full report at the next Senate meeting. Evans reported the Faculty Senate Executive Committee also discussed with the Provost their agenda for this coming year. Accordingly, the second phase of the compression relief for associate and full professors is planned to be implemented. Also, it is planned to begin studying the salary inversion issue for assistant professors. Has inversion taken place and if so, what is the extent of it and what will be the cost to rectify it? The Provost, at the last meeting, agreed to look at the instructors situation as well. The Faculty Manual will continue to be rewritten to reflect a document that applies to issues and concerns that are completely and totally related to Coastal. If any Senators would like to aid in this ongoing project to review/revise the Faculty Manual please contact the Senate Chair. PROVOST AND OTHER ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS: Dr. Lynn Willett introduced our new Director of Counseling Services, Dr. Hap Cox. Willett also thanked all that had served on that search committee. Provost Barr said some of the faculty were caught in a bind because they were being promoted in the first year of the salary compression relief. The Provost s office will attempt after this year s round of promotions to try and make adjustments in the third year of the salary compression relief. If this can be accomplished earlier it will be done earlier, if it cannot it will occur in the third year. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Faculty Senate Intercollegiate Athletics Committee Annual Report was attached to the September Agenda. Linda Vereen, presented her Faculty Athletics Representative s Report to the Senate (pages 3 7) Vereen, Nominations and Elections Chair, reported that there are six committees with vacancies that need to be filled by the faculty at large. Vereen asked that faculty please take the time to nominate people for these vacancies. Voting for these positions will start on Wednesday, September 8, Page 1 of 7

2 PENDING BUSINESS: None NEW BUSINESS: None ANNOUNCEMENTS: Dan Ennis, Academic Affairs Chair, reported that the committee spent last fall, spring and part of summer revamping the forms for request for new courses. An information packet will be going to the departments, but just know that if you are preparing new programs and courses for this year, the new forms will be on the web. Thank you to Paul Olsen from the Art Department for his assistance in getting a picture of the senators that will appear on our web-page. 3 Faculty Athletics Representative s Report to Senate Coastal Carolina University won a Big South Conference record sixth Sasser Cup from its efforts during the seasons. CCU had: * Six Big South Team Champions (Men s Soccer, Women s Cross Country, Women s Indoor Track, Women s Outdoor Track, Men s Golf and Baseball) * Three NCAA Teams (Men s Soccer, Men s Golf, Baseball) * Six Individual NCAA Qualifiers (Men s Cross Country, Women s Cross Country, Women s Indoor Track and Field, Men s Outdoor Track and Field, Women s Outdoor Track and Field) * Six Big South Coaches of the Year (Men s Soccer, Women s Soccer, Women s Cross Country, Women s Indoor Track, Women s Outdoor Track, Men s Golf) * Big South Men s Soccer Player of the Year, Big South Women s Cross Country Runner of the Year, Big South Men s Cross Country Runner of the Year, Big South Women s Cross Country Rookie of the Year, Big South Outstanding Women s Indoor Track Performer, Big South Outstanding Women s Indoor Field Performer, Big South Outstanding Women s Outdoor Field Performer, Big South Outstanding Men s Outdoor Track Performer, Big South Women s Tennis Player of the Year, Big South Men s Golf Player of the Year, Big South Baseball Player of the Year, Big South Baseball Tournament Most Valuable Player, Big South Women s Track and Field Athlete of the Year * Four Big South Scholar Athletes of the Year (Women s Soccer, Men s Soccer, Women s Indoor Track, Men s Outdoor Track and Field) * 112 All-Conference selections * Four CoSIDA Academic All-America award winners, the most in school history and in the Big South in * Ranked seventh in the nation in Division I-AA football attendance with an average of 104% capacity at Brooks Stadium during the inaugural season. Finished with a winning record. * Men s soccer standout Joseph Ngwenya led the nation in scoring and was named National Player of the Year by Soccer America and Soccer Times, as well as First Team All-American. He was also one of three finalists for the Missouri Athletic Club s Hermann Trophy, awarded annually to the top collegiate player in the nation. He also made CCU history by becoming the first athlete in any sport to be professionally drafted in the first round. Ngwenya was taken third overall in the 2004 Major League Soccer SuperDraft by the Los Angeles Galaxy. Page 3 of 7

4 * Three NSCAA/Adidas Men s Soccer All-Americans and All-Region selections, as well as two Men s Soccer Scholar All-Americans and one women s soccer Scholar-Athlete All-Region selection * College Sports Television Men s Soccer All-American * Men s Soccer first team Academic All-American and two Academic All-District selections (Men s Soccer, Women s Soccer) * Second straight NSCAA/Adidas All-Academic Women s Soccer Team honor * Men s basketball wins 14 games, the most in the last 11 years of the program including winning its first Big South Tournament game in that span. Twenty-two out of twenty-six of the student-athletes who have completed their eligibility in Coach Strickland s program have graduated from the University (96%). * Women s Track Coach Alan Connie was named US Track Coaches Association Southeast Region Indoor Track Coach of the Year after leading the squad to its first-ever Big South title. * Amber Campbell finished third at the U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships in the Weight Throw, finishing ahead of the six-time national champion. She then placed fourth at the NCAA Indoor Championships, earning her fifth All-American honor. She missed representing CCU and the United States at the Olympics by 11 inches. * One USCCCA Men s Cross Country All-Academic team individual selection * Third straight USCCCA All-Academic Men s Cross Country Team honor * Seventh straight All-Academic With Distinction Women s Cross Country team honor * Three NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship qualifiers and 11 NCAA East Regional qualifiers in 14 events * When the women s outdoor track team won the 2004 Big South title, it became the first time in school history that Coastal won the triple crown in a single season - cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track championships. * Women s Soccer team were co-champions of the Big South in their 4 th year of existence.
